If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I'm surprised there's no dedicated ergonomic digital painting control peripherals in place of a keyboard. Something with a couple touch rings for rotation and zoom, maybe a trackball or trackpad for panning, some logically grouped buttons for common operations, and some programmable hotkeys.

Or at least put more effort into the built-in controls on drawing tablets. It's so useless when they only put 5 or 6 buttons on there, easier to just keep your hand on the keyboard instead of shifting back and forth.

Work on your line quality. Flwoing lines, that aren't chicken scratches. The hand doesn't have dents in the outline like that. Forget shading for the moment - keep practicing so the drawing has ONE line per outline/surface/edge, not loose smudgy lines and jagged, broken lines.

The new Cintiq pro has one.

I have a Cintiq 24HD. The express keys and radial menus inside the apps I use are more than enough for what I need. If you spend the time to set them up for the commands you use the most, you don't need the keyboard - and I've been using Photoshop since version 2.5, and know the power of the keyboard for that app.

The new peripheral for the Cintiq Pro looks very interesting - it sounds exactly like what you're talking about.

Looking further, it's sold seperately from the Cintiq, for $100. You can use it with the cintiqs, or Intuos. But the reviews say it's buggy - but - some people are claiming it'll work with other tablets, with the wacom drivers.

I'll keep an eye on this, I'm wondering if it'll work with mine, it would mean even more express buttons.

There's also a generic one, for other types of tablets, too...

Trying to get better at anatomy, am I doing this right? My process is as follows:

1. Draw a human skeleton from reference.
2. Draw the skeleton from memory, compare to reference, draw it again.
3. Same, but with flesh on.
4. Once I start to understand the proportions and how things should look and connect, I look up poses and try to draw them starting from the skeleton.

>> No.2976135

>>2975861
Got it. I didn't mean to make it look so scratchy, I was doing Dodson and was restating frequently. My fingers unfortunately do have some dents, I'll take a picture next time for reference.

should I erase lines then to get it to one line per outline/surface/edge? Because until now instead of erasing I just go over it with another line.

Honestly, you don't need to draw everything from a skeleton.

Its a waste of time imo. You just need to get a BASIC understanding.
Do more form studies and gesture drawings. find different pictures of the figure in different angles and draw it until you can rotate it freely in your head.
Draw it until you feel the form.

Do large chunks first and add small details later.

Just draw a lot you'll learn where everything goes..Connects, bumps etc as you become more observant.

my days consist of doing literally nothing and have been like that for many years now. im tired of consuming and want to create, i've always wanted to, but now that i'm trying i just get anxious despite it being the only way i want to spend my time. i can feel a physical pain in my chest and start to get a headache looking at anything at all i consider art and not being able to make anything myself.
even this brings that on. it's very depressing. even with this i sense a lot more perceptive skill than i could ever hope to achieve because i look at what little i can do or the way moving a pencil feels to me and i have little hope i could ever create something that feels natural.

That's how it starts man. Everybody goes through that.

You're going to keep seeing artwork that's going to pain you for not being able to create things like that. You're going to get anxious about starting because you're seeing it as such a huge endeavor and you want to just skip the journey and get to the end right away. It is in fact very depressing to keep yourself in that cycle of inspiration and doubt.

But there is no right way to start drawing. There is no right time. The beginning stages are going to be extremely clumsy and slow. You're going to stagger a lot. But what other choice do you have? It's either you go through that, or you never learn ever.

The beginning will be rough, but you know what? If you diligently put in the effort, practice correctly, slowly taking step by step, you'll get better. Drawing will feel better, become even a little easier. You'll start to see progress which will give you a lot of confidence in yourself. You may even start to enjoy it and feel gratified.

Drawing is just like any other skill. It's just a matter of learning, practice, and effort. If you give yourself the time to consistently do that, you will improve. Just draw past that little voice in your head that's telling you all kinds of non-sense about not making it. Given time, you won't even have any doubt left, you'll just keep drawing because you know you can do it.

Can't really call this much of a fundamental exercise if it is stylized so much. A lot of the expressions are weak on the faces because you haven't moved the cheeks upwards with the mouth's muscles. Also the nose isn't flared and one eyebrow is not correctly placed on the angry-face. The skull looks like it's from a chimpanzee because the forehead slopes dramatically. You should focus on keeping lighter values in your sketch style, a lot of it is too dark to make out any definition in the shapes because you've compressed most of the detail into the darker end. Was it also meant to be 3552x2000 large? Remember to resize your drawings.

Those improvement threads make me legitimately depressed. People get so much better in the space of a year with a practice schedule not unlike my own, yet I'm stuck in the same spot I was two years ago.

He's saying you moved the brow for a lower angle but drew everything else from straight on giving the microencephalitic look. This low/straight-on mixup also lead to misplaced ears that are too high. You went overboard with the eyes so the face looks stretched instead of seeing the sides of the head, and the same with the mouth which should be bounded approximately by the pupils. Does paint software matter? I don't have a adobe CC license on my mac so I can't use ps6 due to low resolution issues regarding retina display. I recently bought a tablet and got use to the tools on sketchbook pro and it seems to be find with me. I'm no where interested in getting into the industry, I'm more so into fashion design and illustration, logo making etc.

I'm pretty sure I can get just enough out of sketchbook pro to do what I want and more, just like photoshop

I don't understand the first part at all.

Sketchbook Pro is a solid app. It has the basic toolset you'd need - and it's honestly one of the best on the market.

I've been designing logos professionally for decades. THE app you want to learn for that is Illustrator. It's the industry standard, and you really should learn vector if that's the kind of work you want to do. It's a got a steep learning curve, but there's nothing like it once you learn it.

I know that you're excited to see results but you're not going to get noticeable differences in a matter of days, all that's happened here is you've drawn things in a slightly different way at the same skill level.

It takes months to see real improvement and that's only if you study and practice hard, keep a monthly log instead, it'll look better.

1) Pick a cube.
2) Choose a pair of parallel edges that have clearly defined ends.
3) Identify the direction of "going further from the viewer."
4) Using the line tool, draw long perfectly straight lines that overlap with those edges. The lines have to be long enough to cross each other at some point in the direction defined in step 3. To draw a line, just point your cursor at a "closer" vertex, and, holding the left mouse button, drag it away, minding that it should overlap the chosen edge of the cube.
5) Now simply drag lines from the remaining vertices to that point where the lines cross, which is called the vanishing point. Remember that a cube only has 4 parallel edges in each of the three sets (aka dimensions), so you need to draw only 4 lines.

If the lines from step 5 don't match the cube you've drawn, it means you dun goof'd either at cube drawing stage or at the stage of constructing a grid. Determine the correct answer and note what you have learned.
