If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Since this was posted near end of dead thread ima repost.

whenever I try and study it looks nothing like the image. how do I become a photocopier?

whenever i try to match the image it comes out retarded. I can't even trace the image either the few times i've tried that.

Trimmed the rib cage and waist a bit.
Tried fixing the breasts. (I want to make them look softer without making them much bigger)
I'm not sure how to trim the shoulders down without completely breaking them.

Torso still looks manly, I think its the shoulders.

More critiques are welcome.

looks like someone has the spark™
at leat in the stroke/lineart department

Here is the secret:
1-If you had read the sticky you would have know what I'm about to tell you
2-you can measure a drawing this way
try thinking of those point guided drawings you did as a kid.
think where the subject could have them.
ok, now (i have known of some people using a ruler, the ones that use stuff use a pencil instead. most just use their imagination. is not that hard as it sounds) try visualizing a point up, left or right . where it is is kind of irrelevant as long as you can make a line.
now, after you have done that, try correcting what isnt aligned with the photo. look at the pic and the lines and you can see what should be touching those lines and what not.

but before that you should learn how to sketch, copy pictures, first drafts. you made an entire thing without construction it seems.

read the sticky and pic bert dodson book for that.

also >>2967604

It looks like shit but the strokes/line art are really impressive.

It would be a waste of talent if you didnt get to a competent level to create art.

keep studying

Thank you, it kinda happened by accident. I recently heard a motto " Don't blend it before you've colored the shadows roughly in." So Instead of shading, then blending, shading then blending, I just shaded and then blended with quick strokes upward, with the oil brush, giving it a texture. Only used these colors, any other color on the legs are a result of them mixing

It's a little hard to explain.
I guess it's some place where my work is solid, distinguishable, and reads well.
I'd like to see myself on the other side of this wall with some satisfaction and possibly a little recognition.

I want to overcome these self-imposed barriers that hold me back.
I'm always confused and unsure of myself, so I can't tell you exactly what I want.
I'd like to get over that too.
It keeps changing.

Becoming a "good" artists has been a goal for as long as I can remember.
Although it has been nice seeing some improvements over the years (slowly), I want to break from mediocrity and have some decent skill.

None of this is for money.
I just want it to be a reality I'm happy with.

I hope I get there someday.

True, but it helps to differentiate between direct and indirect light. Reflected light is usually more diffuse and more vividly colored (since it takes the color of whatever surface it reflects off of).

Posted in ded thred by accident.

How can I draw people facing straight? I realized I always draw them at an angle, and I'm trying to break this habit, and it looks weird as shit.

This is my current attempt. I'm trying to use the reference things I saw used by Loomis, along with trying to use up more of my page, which I feel contributed to the weird look. The hips below look fine (to me, but I'm the beginner here) but past that, it looks weird, especially the crotch and waist area. The arm is too long as well.

I used a ruler to keep the main body proportioned (both the body and thighs are around 5cm, with the calves being around 4.) but it still looks off. Pls help

About same values of the shade on the black skirt and the leg: I forgot to add that you check them with base layers turned off completely. Black (dark gray due to light) and skintone-colored legs wouldn't have the same value shading, obviously, as their base values are different. If you check the consistency of shading just on the skin or the skirt, then you don't need to turn the base layers off.

The "Lines" look the best imo. Using thinner lines, a bit more controlled color palette and a stabilizer for those shaky hands might help this particular drawing.
You can colorize the lines with a clipping mask or a colorize layer, what kind of software do you use?

Your drawing overall would improve if you tried drawabox.com or picked up a book from the artbook thread (Fun with a pencil, maybe Keys to drawing) and spent some time with that, aside from your regular drawing for fun.

I'm tearing my hair out, I just don't understand gesture drawing.
>Practice gesture to understand anatomy
>Don't do gesture until you fully understand anatomy
>Find the flow and keep it free and loose
>Find the center and anchor it down to give it weight
>Don't follow the contours
>Follow the form
>Do it all in 30 seconds
This is so immensely frustrating. I just don't get it. I don't fucking get it. I don't see how drawing references even worse than I normally do is helping me improve. I don't understand why every person has a different idea of what a gesture 'is', but doesn't expand on what you do that *makes* it a gesture drawing. I don't understand any of this shit. It's like teaching an adult how to swim.

It's too early to be doing this kind of stuff, you won't learn from it anything worthwhile.
Learning anatomy and planes at this point is like learning advanced astrophysics before learning basic math.

Lines, shapes, simple forms, form combinations and intersections, everyday objects, bugs, plants...
Those are subjects arranged from the simplest to the most complex you should be able to draw.
I didn't even go further than "plants" and you're already at the human body. See what I mean?

Try drawabox, learn perspective and construction, because that's what you need to draw pretty much anything. I recommend working traditional as well as digital.

I'm glad to see you're feeling the form of that snake tail, it looks very appealing.
Although as other anon has pointed out, there are a few things fucked about that arm.
- It's too long (measure with craniums)
- the muscles of the forearm start too low and don't twist as they should
- the fingers are extended (your tendons aren't that long)
- the shoulder isn't raised despite supporting a lot of weight

Look up a ref if you don't know the anatomy from head, ideally try the pose yourself and observe.

>>2970121
I'd wish there was a nicer way to say this, but it's what we refer to as "a polished turd". The underlying drawing isn't very strong and no amount of rendering can fix that. Start with a solid drawing, then block in your values with a large brush. All the tiny color spots make her skin look muddy more than anything.

So yea, focus on the drawing and sorry for putting it that way, the picture isn't bad at all, but I need you to understand the principle.

I'd draw long wriggling seaweed coming up from the sand bottom. His cord leads up to an alien-looking incubator thingy that fell out of a sunken ship/spaceship in the background, which is heavily damaged. No offence but I don't want to draw "bigger eyes to make it more appealing" why would I do that, I don't fancy drawing neither cartoons or anime. That was what I saw from the reference.

Lips, eyes and hair are giving me the most trouble. I guess I could try revising separate features before tackling whole portrait, that'd work I think. Also I'm working through Keys to drawing and finished chapter 4. But I was forced to skip "light and mood" coz I wouldn't want to sketch outside or wait for weather changes.

Local library got lots of books about drawing and painting but I don't yet want to tackle them when I have not finished my own.

Thank you for your response.
