I will start off this rant by saying /ic/ shouldn't be spammed with nonsense threads like these. Put it on /v/.

They went with a completely different direction for the character which is less strong than the original they thought of. On their blog they stated:

>When we were reviewing Vasco’s design, we felt the character’s combination of Spanish conquistador and cowboy influences lacked cohesion

Which doesn't matter one bit when you've got a kamen rider-esque character in your game already. You need to do your best to make it work, come up with ideas or read some stories to see how it could be cohesive. Be creative. It's a whimsical excuse.

There's also this, which I feel you shouldn't worry about too much if you don't have a character that's like this or like that, as long as the character's varied enough that you can tell that's who that character is then you don't have to worry about making sure at least one of them's fat or tall or whatever.


When it comes to presentation, I feel as if they've done it in a very unprofessional matter where they released this new design to the world with flat colors only. This is not the dev team they're showing this off to, this is the audience. You have to present this new design to the audience in the best way possible. Had they went through with colorizing his gun or adding shading to him maybe people would've found it a bit easier to swallow but they didn't do that so it's easier for everyone to deem it as trash.

I see the one on the right, and it instantly clicks, conquistador cowboy, cool. Very unique, the themes blend well, etc...

I see the one on the left, and I just have a hard time wrapping my head around what's going on. He's an old gentlemanly black dude, with a gunslinger coat, and some armor on for some reason, and a handgun... that has a bayonet.

Presentation aside, the design on the right is considerably stronger than the one on the right. It's WAY more cohesive.

Then make a NEW character like that. What you came up with to replace it is really fucking strange all around. Like, hell, literally take what you had, and make him more lanky, and it'd still work. I don't understand why the sudden change in themes from something that worked, to something that flat out doesn't make any sense.

Design is supposed to tell a story, and instantly convey what something is. I see the design on the right, and I can't make much sense of it.

Looks insanely out of place next to all of the other characters, clearly done by a different artist/designer. The color scheme makes zero sense, the collar area is needlessly detailed, and that hard cut-off of the armor piece at the waist is an awful design choice. It's really quite bad.

I assume they had a typical drama quarrel among devs and the character designer left, holding the current artworks as hostage and the others empty handed, but yeah they should have finalized the product before showing it.

the new one just needs something more going on around the waist/legs area to balance out detail near the top, like some sick ass thigh high metal greaves (fits the conquistador motif) and some flaring of the chest armor at the hips. maybe some better (read: bigger) gloves, like gauntlet style. also bring back the cool shape design in the facial hair/regular hair

But the new design is an utter shit.

If i was drawing on that level i would kill myself. Its a bad character design all over.
The colors the character, design - everything is bland.

It looks like it was drawn by a tumblr girl who just wanted to change "generic" picture into "unqiue" by making a black conquistador dude for some reason.

There's no value in your line of argument because if you start rolling changes back all you'll be left with is the original design. But design wise, it looks generic as fuck. Both of them do actually. My advice is to redesign the character again or at least add more unique clothing choices or something. If he is a background character then I guess its fine but I still recommend a redesign.

My final thought, I just get a "meh" feeling from it.

Holy shit, I was trying to work with ONLY the colors in the new design, no new colors. The only exception was the darker silver on the belt buckle, which is minor. Making his skin white with the current color scheme would clearly change things a lot because they made him black with the new color scheme in mind. In this particular case, pale pinks wouldn't look so good with pale skin because his face would get lost in it and wouldn't stand out as much.
The "vibe" they were going for is clearly "old black guy who is a gunslinger". It's a distinct vibe from "old white guy who is a gunslinger". Why? I don't know. But it is. I kept within the boundaries of the new design. It's not like I'm the one who made him black in the first place.

that image you posted isn't actually a palette from skullgirls but rather a base for each zone on an a character so that they can easily recolor each piece without having to go back and redo the coloring for every single frame of animation for every single palette. it's a pretty clever way to handle non-pixel-art 2d palette swaps

i PERSONALLY would love to play the swaggeristic oldhead on the left, but the right one seems solid as well. What's weird about the design change is that they look like theyre from the same series/world, and my mind wants to play as both.
