great piece. looking at it now i'm 99% sure this is in reference to sleep paralysis

definitely, i had it once or twice and one of the main things was the feeling of having weight on my chest (the other was a feeling of being literally frozen in fear)

from wikipedia:
The original definition of sleep paralysis was codified by Samuel Johnson in his A Dictionary of the English Language as nightmare, a term that evolved into our modern definition. Such sleep paralysis was widely considered the work of demons, and more specifically incubi, which were thought to sit on the chests of sleepers. In Old English the name for these beings was mare or mære (from a proto-Germanic *marōn, cf. Old Norse mara), hence comes the mare in the word nightmare.

So a nightmare originally was literally a demon sitting on your chest in sleep paralysis.

I never had it, sounds spooky though. I had friends tell me about it, they said there was like a creature or person standing at the edge/periphery of their vision and they could not move.

the hallucinatory part of mine was just an intruder putting his weight on my chest with his knee, so it wasn't as freaky as a demon or anything, very scary though.

I had it plenty of times, maybe because for some reason my brain says fuck you and wakes up immediately after my body goes into sleep mode. Sometimes I fell asleep and I have a extremely short dream, afterwards I know immediately it is sleep paralysis.

Being paralyzed in such state is annoying as hell (I have to force my body to move which feels like trying to pick up a boulder), but I never noticed anything strange on sight.

Still, unless you're used to the experience you better hope you don't get it, it's not a nice feeling at all.

This is a painting of a demon called Incubus.

Known to have sex with female virgins while they're in deep sleep.

I wrote this post and now, two hours later, I'm watching an episode of "Nathan for you" and they're talking about Incubus all the time. I believe it's called the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon. That or the incubus read my post.

I've had it a few times. The one I remember most was real spooky. I couldn't tell if my eyes were open or not, but I was terrified to open them because I could just feel that there was something horrible on top of me.

If y'all can find it, I highly recommend The Last Family. It's about Beksiński's fucked up family life, and while it doesn't attempt to give any answers about his work, it shows the tension that constantly surrounded him. Amazing movie whether you're a fan of his work or not.

why do all you guys like beksinski so much? i see 0 appeal. he learned how to paint one texture, it happened to lend itself to "creepy" paintings so that's all he made. What's the obsession and reverence? Max Ernst did the same thing but at least some of his paintings were nicer to look at.

Very debatable. Beksinski has a more minimalistic monochromatic and professional feel to them. While I love Ernsts works also, the color takes awaybthe creepy factor to me. Theres usually more of a confusing story in his works than compared to Beksinskis mysterious atmosphere. They're both amazing painters, but to each their own.

i like the way his paintings look like some hellish corrupted version of reality, like exactly something i'd see in my nightmares. he does his thing well, even if his work is a bit repetitive.
