If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

You're getting closer. Keep practicing. Break off and just do some cube every once in a while.

Start adding features to the face as soon as possible. They'll probably be way off but it'll be good for you to know where exactly you're at.

I spent a long time just trying to perfect the ball and plane. Then when I started adding features they were still way off because I didn't know how they worked.
Try to practice both at the same time. Kill two birds with one stone.

Took a bit of time to get what you're trying to say, and I'm not sure if that's how it's done. If we inspect various references like Hyper Angle vol. 3 or sketchfab models, the size of their breasts appears very different only in close-up shots, fitting my understanding of foreshortening: that the extent it affects the objects is proportional to the distance between them relative to their distance from the viewer. I. e. if the camera is almost touching the right boob, the left boob will appear considerably smaller, and if the girl is standing 50 meters away, the difference would be barely noticeable, if ever. In our case the camera should be about... 3 or so meters away, and the closest breast is slightly bigger than the other. But I'll check the foreshortening of the breasts anyway. It should be okay if I play with them a bit more. *lenny_face*

the general rule of thumb is tea > milk > honey. So you start with a thin "tea" wash to establish colors and values. Milk is a bit thicker, adding more depth and detail. Honey is very saturated pigment for finishing touches. Your painting looks like it never got past the "tea" stage.

what might help is before you start to colour to kind of do a "rough colouring" on it. see what you want to make darker and what you want to make lighter and highlight those places with a darker shade of black, that way you have kind of a guideline when you start to actual colour stuff
also details in your drawings make it look alot better, your right drawing has much more detail than the one in your left, why its also a better drawing

Get the skull shape right first, then mark the eye, nose, mouth etc... placement. Get the underlying structure as close as possible, then start painting. This will make the likeness somewhat similar rather than looking like another person.

Redo the entire thing. Do it two or 3 times (more or less) until you feel that you kinda improve then move on to other ref. But really, if you're stress out about it take a break for a while.

It's not practice if its easy. It's hard only because you're heading in the right direction.

I'll tell you how.
I did that for a whole month before I bought me a tablet. (And before that I used my mouse for everything.)

You draw some shit. Then you take a photo of it with good lighting or scan it. Then you upload it to your computah. Then you open your Photoshop and color everything cautiously in normal mode so that your paper won't be visible at all. (You can or have to trace the outlines first.) And then you render it. That's how it's done, man. Pic related is the second picture I used this process in.

Been 3 weeks since I started drawing. Spent around 45 mins on this.

I know I forgot to tilt the head to the left.

Any feedback?

Also, how can I apply shadowing when im working with a pencil? In this case for example, I have been drawing horizontally. Swinging my pen left and right, however the shadow was getting thicker from right left. If I started drawing vertically, up and down, then the drawing just doesn't look right. From what I've read bert dodson does not give a lot of focus on the strokes and shading (not because is a bad book, its just a subject that is too broad. Shading and strokes).

There are entire books dedicated to that.

But for you I recommend to just get it done and move on. The more you grind the more easy it will become to make the strokes and shade the way you want..

Your biggest fault I would say that you can tell the direction of the strokes of the pencil, too visible. try rubbing your finger and use an eraser. dodson explains that later in the book.

I just got a tablet, how do I into pressure sensitivity and line thickness.
when drawing on paper I never really paid attention to line thickness, if line was to thick I'd eras some of it and if a line was too thin I'd add onto it. but now with the tablet my drawings come out uneven on their line distribution, some parts are thick because I accidently pressed down to hard and some parts are thin because I pressed to lightly.
what I want to know is if there are any exercise to master pressure sensitivity and control? and when to use line thickness?

>what I want to know is if there are any exercise to master pressure sensitivity and control
Using a tablet should do just fine

What style? If it's line-art, you usually use fatter lines on areas where there's more shadow, and lighter lines where light hits. That's sort of a general easy-to-remember rule.

Thinking about things in forms instead of shapes really helped me. It sounds silly but a lot of beginners are told to look for the shapes, like a circle or square, when drawings things. Really we should be told to look for 3d objects and instil that they're forms in the first place. When you see a picture and want to draw it, imagine the form lines extending across it. Imagine how they'd wrap around it.

An exercise for this is to get some pictures of insects and draw the form lines around them. If you need an example of it then Ctrl paint does a good video on it.

guys, I've been trying to learn to draw from my shoulder for like 6 months now, putting in at least 30 minutes almost every day, but I just can't get as much control as I have with my wrist. After tons of practice, I can finally draw mostly straight lines on command, but I can't trace any more complicated curves, or shade in areas precisely or consistently, and whenever I'm trying to work on something that's not just straight lines, it never comes out the way I envision it in my head. I'm reading through Scott Robertson's how to draw (these methods are pure autism by the way holy shit), and I got to the part where he mentions computer generated underlays and grids.

My goal is to git good enough to produce my own comics, so how common is it a practice to use these programs when you're making environments for scenes? Obviously I know they're no replacement for learning the fundamentals first, I'm just wondering whether or not they're something I should look into down the line

I started drawing anime when I was 12 and stopped drawing at about 13. I want to get back into it but every time I try not only is it absolutely terrible but it ends up being in a degenerate art style that's like a fusion of anime, cartoon and trying to be realistic. Hi. This is my first ever drawing. I drew it on an app called Sketchbook on my Android smartphone, with a stylus that I found at the end of a laser pointer.

Do I have potential?

How can I improve my skills exponentially? I would like to draw graphic-novel-tier webcomics as soon as possible. I have no prior training or anything.

Also dismiss the topic. It's just the first thing that came to my head to draw. Just evaluate the skills and potential. Thanks.

The first thing that comes to mind is, that you need to work on your lines. Your lines are wiggly and wonky, which is not what you want in gestures. You want nice curves flowing into each other.

Don't just limit yourself to proko, try looking at other resources for gesture drawing aswell.
Look at hamptons course and look how villpu does his (there are many videos of him on youtube). Also on conceptart.org in the official quickposes thread there is that one guy spamming his gesture tutorial and demonstration images, you might want to take a look at those aswell.

With gesture alot of it is just grinding and you just have to kind of "get it". Everyone starts out like you so don't be discouraged.

You should also read a book on perspective if you haven't yet. Even though proko tells you that gestures are flat bullshit, a understanding of form in space is necessary.

You improve and notice it more by doing things from imagination. It tests what you've learned in your studies by applying it to things when you don't ahve a -direct- reference to whatever you're drawing.

Stop focusing on the time it takes and focus on giving it your full effort every day. You'll end up being frustrated and quitting if you keep words like "how long" in your head.

It's bad form to do so in an actual piece you claim as your own "work" though, unless you make it very clear that you traced it and you're basically doing an amazing job of tracing. Still, you'd just be redundant living xerox machine rather than an artist.

The right hand is okay, but the left one looks pretty weird. I'd rather redo the oar (red line) than the hand. It doesn't help that it is much shorter (inverted perspective, yo) than the far one.

Additionally, he seems to be leaning to his right considerably, while his legs are sliding in the opposite direction. Is this intentional? If not, see the blue line.
