If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

What do you do if you can't find a pose you're looking for, nor do you have anyone to pose for you? I don't have a camera, or the physique for the pose I want, nor am I talented enough to draw it from my imagination.

I need a shirtless, muscular dude with his arms tied above his head. Only pics I can find of people with their arms tied up like that are women, and I don't know how to translate the chest area well enough.

I like the look of her! I love merms so I ended up doing something similar. Mine is based on a freshwater electric eel while yours is more of a mythical sea one. For some tips on creating an environment for a character; it focuses a lot on the conceptual stage of work. While you are thinking up your character: think about where they are and what they are doing. For example, yours is a sea one, so you could include coral/ rocks ect. If its open sea, more color variation, and rays of light from the surface could help too. also adding particles in the water helps give a better feeling of the ocean.

Another thing to note is
>>2947684
is right. And, it's also the answer to your response
>>2947688
In helping build a better, more 3-dimensional character. A different pose would suit the character more, and add depth and dimension. strong construction ensures depth, while color and lighting enhance it. Try to think of your beginning sketch in more of a 3-D way, and box things in to make sure you move past flatness.

That being said, I would do a redline but I am not confident enough because I am a beginner myself. Best of luck!

You don't need to use so Many lines to get that tough, gritty look. Instead, use textures and a very quick and sharp strokes.

Also consider using dark, sharp shadows as well to add to that gritty atmosphere.

The rib cage looks (a bit) like it was drawn to short and wide but thats just me.

For a good example of a gritty style, please google Yoji Shinkawa art. His work is very textured but if you look closely, you'll see that it's painted very loosely with a range od sharp abstract shapes and subtle shading here and there.

How can I get the proportions right when starting from a gesture? I always get the head too big like in pic related. My aim isn't to match the reference 1:1 but I want to at least get the proportions right.

Like in pic related, the head is way too wide. I tried to make the images the same size as possible but they're not exactly the same size. But in the photo the side of her head to the end of the shoulder is about 1 head width, in my drawing it's only 3/5th. But if I widen the arm then the arm just looks way too fat.

>Or is it just an oversimplification of a larger discussion?

It's oversimplified because it's not bad, it's just not ideal. From life you have an entire scene in front of you -- that is, you can see the shape of the person's face in three dimensions, even if they don't move much. You can't look at a photo and then symbol-draw the shadows to create form (not quite symbol-draw, but you know what I mean -- drawing the shadows based on their shape in the photo rather than figuring out the form and applying them based on what you see.) You learn quicker from real life.

Where might I find clear perspective exercises (especially in video form)? I can read PME as suggested in the sticky/wiki, but I want clearer exercises that define clearly the organized method of perspective. Though, admittedly, I have not read the whole book. Should I just continue reading to find the skills I'm looking for?

I understand concepts like the horizon line and eye level, HWD, and relative distance sizing, but applying the understanding of these concepts is where I feel I am lacking. For instance, I tried to draw a simple head with a downward angle, but it came out seemingly direct to eye level.

Not sure if trolling, but okay, let's elaborate it on the arm.
Go up to the mirror topless, make the same pose and note how your arm is shaped. If you're not a skinny weakling, make some adjustments but define the bones and muscles.

"Obviously drawn that way," you say? She's so thin that I find it very hard to believe she has any internal space for organs, and giving birth would likely kill her. I say it again, she is clearly underdeveloped.

I'm trying to improve my linework digitally as I feel like Michael J Fox whenever I attempt it. I saw this video today and I thought the linework was pretty kickass.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1MhaTipED8
I copied the settings they used for the pen when lining the mermaid but I don't really know what canvas size he's using. I tried copying the image into sai (pic related) to try and trace over it to see if my lines are along the same line, Pun not intended, but mine are much smaller. I'm confused. I'm not even sure if pic related was the size it was drawn in.

well, how else am I going to finish a portrait in 10 minutes or less? Should I just not post them?

>> No.2949307

I still have no idea how to do lines.
Here's my problem: I don't know how to move my arm while drawing at all. Using my wrist feels way more controlled and comfortable, but leads to sketchy chickenscratch. If I use my shoulder like many guides say you should, I don't feel in control of my lines at all. It feels really uncomfortable nerve wracking to use my shoulder except for the biggest of lines, and I mean big.
What arm movements do I use when and why?

>> No.2949332

>>2949305
Chill, man. Tis' a question of likeness. It doesn't matter whether your lines are as loose as a 50 years old slut. If you want people to recognize the nationality of the portrayed being, hone your technique and put lines down wisely.

I think the intended meaning in the last post is something like "rough and free (unbound by anything)." It is possible to draw a good looking picture roughly, just like it's possible to construct everything perfectly but fail to make it look good and interesting.

However, you seemingly lack skill necessary for drawing good looking rough pictures yet. Your lines are "loose" in the "sloppy" sense. And yes, you can master it by continuing to do what you do now, but you have to draw other subjects than yourself as well.

>> No.2949360

Try going slowly and don't be afraid to restate your lines. There is a BIG difference between making several long confident strokes and making one stroke made of several tiny less confident ones (chicken scratch)

Quite deliciously, but you still need to work on your anatomy and foreshortening. The arm of the girl in the lower right corner looks wrong: the shoulder (dislocated) and the upper arm (the inner outline is too straight) are poorly executed, and the arm itself is too long (longer than the other).

>>2949421
Lol, so that post was yours (you're that British lad, right)? Didn't even recognize you. I thought that you left this thread.
Anyway, you gave the girl's hair too much volume. It would look fine if you stopped at that black line, but now it looks like she is secretly an alien. Other than that, I wouldn't say any of those look bad (at least without comparing them to the references). If you feel like you're stagnating, that's probably because you only do studies and don't draw from imagination, maybe?

I've been practicing Abstract Watercolor/Acrylic for the last year, my work is minimalistic and inspired by the likes of Lee Ufan, I use my philosophy of art degree to write short abstract poetic essays about each piece, my Insta has been slowly gaining followers and I've just started a blog to drip feed the essays and get an online portfolio going

Does anyone here work in a similar art style that could give critique? it would be greatly greatly appreciated
