This phrase always ticks me off. It's as if to say that webcomics are inferior to other fields in art like conceptart or illustration. Like you'll never hear the phrase "the art is passable for an illustration or the art is passable for an animation" why are webcomics allowed to have lower qualities of art?

>> No.2941836

Time and cost 0.

>> No.2941837

>passable for an illustration
>passable for an animation

These phrases are often said, though. It is often accompanied with the preconcieved standards for these mediums. When people say "passable for a webcomic" they already have a set standard for what a "typical" webcomic looks like, thus the standards.

Because a lot of great webcomics have shit art. Look at Jerk City and Homestuck. If I were you I would try to distance myself from that label though.

>> No.2941843

"Passable for animation" is said quite often. The art in animation is obviously much simpler than a fully rendered painting because everything needs to be drawn tens, hundreds, thousands of times. The same goes for comics.

>> No.2941851

Webcomics make little or no money, so less effort is put into them, with a few rare exceptions.

Like even though the OP is fairly well-drawn, it has minimal backgrounds and the linework is kind of messy. It would be hard for that art to end up in a print comic.

while plenty of people certainly use it in a dismissive way, there is the other side of the coin where in a comic isn't purely about the draftmanship. as long as you can draw in a way where it reads clearly enough for any viewer to understand what's going on in the image you're more or less there, keep in mind plenty of people read comics purely for the writing and/or visual storytelling elements which don't really rely upon the visuals being the pinnacle of their craft

see something like the original art for OPM or mob 100 or almost literally any webcomic gag strip

pic related is one of my friends favorite comics of all time. he really likes the way the tree is used as diegetic panel boarders

Are you retarded? Of course the individual quality of a comic page can be lower than a full illustration since quantity comes with it. One of the importants parts is storytelling. Whether the art is super detailed or not depends of the author, but it can be very simplified if it focuses on the narration.

Most comic artists wouldn't survive a day as illustrators. Let's not even talk about webcomic artists.
This is a simple fact of life you have to cope with.

Well I enjoy the art first and foremost, but it kind of has that book/movie effect. Where it's a combination but it's almost subpar comparatively? Maybe I'm wrong but I haven't been exposed to many. I liked watchmen but apparently the movie is pretty faithful so why wouldn't I just watch that to get the message. And on the flip side you have a book where you're having an intimate experience with the author, reading his exact thoughts. Idk I have no idea what I'm saying.

Web comics are a form that can get away with relying heavily on story or humor, supplemented by passable art. People read them casually and share them on social media, if they're relateable - which makes them successful. It's also a form where you do better if you post reliably and frequently (so art can take a back seat there) and there's also the fact that there are no gatekeepers (ie publishing companies) policing the quality of content put out, which allows bad artists to find an audience if they have marketable ideas. Either way the bar is lower for web comics because a lot of people out there are indifferent to art quality (due to no training) so long as they're entertained. This doesn't take away from the fact that web comics CAN have phenomenal art - and they aren't inherently a form monopolized by crappy artists.

>the movie is pretty faithful
>I have no idea what I'm saying

Clearly.

Either way, don't compare comics to books or movies. It's a different form of narrative that has a long history and it's own tricks for story telling (ie, using the anticipation of the turn of a page to build tension). There are a lot of great comics out there, so if you're interested in the form, read a few before forming an opinion. You mentioned The Watchmen, so maybe try Saga, Hellboy, or The Sandman.

Don't take it too harshly. Unlike published comics, Webcomics have to way of gatekeeping to keep out bad artists, therefore the average level of art in webcomics is far lower than that of published comics. It might come off as insulting, but it is pretty accurate.
It doesn't mean there can't be good webcomic art, it just means that good webcomic art is more impressive when it happens.

Because anyone can upload their webcomic, Of course the average quality is incrediby lower than of published mainstream comics.
So when they say it's "passable for a webcomic" they mean it's bettern than the usual average quality of webcomics
