I'm hoping that I can get into color properly during my study of this book as well as more value studying.

I'm really eager to pick up Vilppu after this or another book that would help me with getting down facial features. I can construct heads in many different perspectives with no problem, but applying facial features just fucks me up.

Vilppu won't help much with facial features though he will help you with other things. Maybe try checking out Hampton/Kevin Chen/Huston for head construction as they construct the major forms of the features as well. It helped me a lot.

Thanks. I read a suggestion about trying to get your drawing done in as little strokes as possible and really trying to nail that to become more efficient.

For me ( >>2919584 ), a regular white color pencil actually does work just fine. Why are you having problems with one?

A white color pencil works great when it's not in any contact with darker marks. It smudges into a shiny, muddy mess if you try and draw over graphite, but when used directly onto toned paper, it works fine.

For drawing on top of darker marks - grab a white gel pen. I use a Sakura Gelly Roll Regular Gel Ink Pen - 0.4 mm - White. A white gel pen allows you to draw on top of graphite easily, which is really handy for drawing fine highlights in the eyes, for example.

This one reads just as bad as the previous one.

Here's your issue: you're not using contrast to help distinguish different features. I'm not talking about a contrast in black/white values, but a contrast in shapes & details. The is too much detail in too many shapes that are all too tiny.

You need to be breaking these complex images up with varying levels of detail and larger, clearer and simpler shapes. For example, I recommend leaving any skin blank (like the hands). If you fill those in, they're just going to add to the visual clusterfuck of the drawing, but leaving them more empty & less detailed will really make them pop and look great. This is because they will be a lower detail shape contrasted by the higher detail shapes around it.

Does that make sense? Just my thoughts!

I had huge problems to draw the features in an interesting way - everything is so much harder when I can't cheat with photoshop.

Nice stuff Whitlach fanboy(girl?). You have a blog?

I think you are being very clinical about it, and that's good for gaining an understanding of what is going on, but at the same time it is easy to miss the essence of the animal. It doesn't really FEEL like a donkey, you know? The impression is not clearly communicated. Take a look at someone like Claire Wendling and you will see she understands animals, and what it is that makes a cat look like a cat, a fox like a fox etc. Even if she isn't doing them all that accurately or scientific there is that other quality that captures the way that animal looks and behaves. You might try to focus on that side of things more in addition to the stuff you are doing already.

Thanks for the advice. I do follow Claire Wendling's work and she's probably my second favourite. I'll try to put more essence into the animals, this particular study felt very lacking.

I am actually sort of half-following along with Terryl's schoolism classes where she instructs her students to draw detailed drawings and then label the anatomy, but since i'm only a monthly subscriber and not actually enrolled in the course i'm just half-heartedly doing it, like the envious homeless child gazing through a school class window pretending to study while scrawling on paper with a broken stick.

As for blog, I haven't posted much in a while other than commissions as i've been mostly doing pencil studies that I don't publish much but here ya go.

I really love your style. It's great when other anons use colour without holding back. You don't see a lot of pencil crayons in published work other than the Big YUM YUM Book or children's books. Collected Fairy Tales tend to make use of etchings or watercolours.

i just like the Altoids thing because its small and magnets will stick to it and it will stay closed. i like to be utilitarian. i only use a mapping nib and g nibs when i am using them so i dont need a bunch of slots the cases they come in become the slots when i stick them to the magnet.

I'm amazed at how much character is in a nib, although it's very funny to be a nib fetishist. The Gillott is nearly an 18th century pen, and the Esterbrook is from a much more settled era. Knowing what Alex Raymond, Mort Drucker and Carl Barks used makes me want to retain their tools as a kind of living museum. When looking at their art, I can't stand the notion that their tools have gone out of production, so I'm obliged to advertise the products I respect most.

Assuming this is pencil, you're going far too dark, probably caused by repeatedly retracing the same lines over and over again.

Most of your lines should be just as thin as those on his breastplate.

Regarding the actual sketch I can nitpick about how the chainmail texture does not wrap around the forms of the body, but rather appears as a static texture, and how there isn't really much form to his right leg compared to the far better definition of depth around the foot/ankle of his left.

tl;dr go bigger, I can tell from the grain of the paper this whole thing is only a few inches wide
