Im having a hard time figuring this out, but these backgrounds are referenced or just digitalized pictures right?

Bakuman is made traditionally so it's probably just a print out.

Is it really? In One Punch Man the characters are drawn traditionnally but the backgrounds aren't.

Dude... I've tried so hard to draw super realistic backgrounds like Inio Asano. It was beyond me how he could draw soo well in a serialized setting.

Takes the pictures himself, talks about how the story often starts from a town or place as the basis. A lot more than can be said from concept artists who just hit up google and leave stock watermarks in their images.

Oh well, I guess directors and DP's aren't worth much either.

you only have yourself to blame for not seeing it when you look at the picture itself. It's like you people think artists have hidden superpowers or something.

Anyways there's a pretty cool documentary series from Manben, they have an episode about this artist https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4sk4ji_urasawa-naoki-no-manben-manga-documentary-s1e3-2015-asano-inio-english-subs-720_creation

I believe drawing from photos is superior.

If you draw everything out of your own head, it feels artificial. Every leaf and every rock is there because human intellect put it there.

Nature is random, organic, uncontrolled. I have never seen a painting done 100% from imagination that feels more lived in than one from natural reference.

Not inherently superior. Nakaba does an amazing job with his backgrounds while it's all hand drawn, and it's because they're very stylized and the setting fits it perfectly.

My 0.02 on this: learn to draw scenery by hand to this kind of level and like in >>2935355 even if it takes you a week to finish one background - then work out how to do it with 3D models and photos.

I don't begrudge mangakas taking shortcuts like this because the results are still aesthetically-pleasing and they have to draw something retarded like 20 pages a week. Unless you have a small army of assistants to help with cleanup and inking, or are Katsuhiro Otomo, you're not going to be able to keep up that quality drawing 3-4 pages a day.

No.

Shopped backgrounds offer no opportunity for style. It's just real life, in monochrome and high contrast. No matter which artist uses this technique, it will always look the same, and as more and more artists use it, it will only become increasingly bland and homogenous.

I don't read manga and comics to see photoshopped pictures that I could make myself, I want to see a world created by a visionary who has the dedication and skill to bring their vision to life, backgrounds and all.

Shopping captures the world exactly as it is (in a very bland, machine like way), this is true; but if I want to see that, I'll simply step outside. I read this shit for style, and if you don't like that I suggest you pick up a camera and head over to >>>/p/.

At least there you don't have to see the world through a shitty photoshop filter.

They even say in one part of Bakuman "yeah we can just trace the backgrounds and vehicles and stuff".

>> No.2937694

To be fair authors does that because backgrounds are secondary in their series. And Asano still kinda added more than plain filters to them.

>> No.2937698

I'm not 100% sure on all of this, but I know that there are/maybe/used to be a technique where you would basically draw something on a another piece of paper, cut it out, and paste it to the background or vice versa.

For example, say you wanted to make a complex background, but to do so it would be difficult to draw the character at the same time. They would draw the character separately and then put them in their place; that's why it sometimes looks like there's a white outline around some characters sometimes.

Maybe.

I'm not super offended about comics using photo manipulated backgrounds. I mean the point of a comic is the narrative and characters. no one should really care if they use a photo every once in a while as long as it isn't flagrant.

It does not matter whether you could tell if they plagiarized, cheated, traced or whatver. The average person would be too mesmerized to even notice the point is to sell hence why (((they))) are so successful at it.

I think the shortcuts that are not noticeable are justified to a certain extent. whereas mangas or animes that wholly rely on rotoscope or photobashing a ton of photographs in a really obvious way DO get called out and trashed. are you denying western artists don't take the same kinds of shortcuts?
