Bit of a strange request, but would anyone have references for backgrounds that are neither boring nor visually cluttered? I'm talking more about simple designs that don't detract attention away from the subject itself.

I know pic related isn't the best example - i dont have many pics on hand as of now, but it has a general sense of what i'm looking for.

Might post more if i ever find any so 1/?

maybe thisss???

i know you said not buzy, but sometimes it needs to be so buzy your brain just visually tunes it out into one big thing

You're approaching this in the wrong way I think. Instead of seeing the background as an extra element you add in at the end behind a character, think about everything as part of a scene. Where is the character and what are they doing? Are they sitting on a couch in a living room relaxing? Crossing the street? Fighting someone/something? Having a smoke break? Hiding? Treat it like a scene from a film, you want to imagine the set and the action happening (or not happening) and how the character fits into it all, and then you place the camera accordingly. How simple the background is will be largely HOW you draw/paint it, not the actual subject matter.

This is the right way to think about it OP, if you have any sort of story planned it shouldn't be difficult to set up your backgrounds appropriately.
