I have to agree with this other anon >>>2916779

It might be a good idea to lengthen the ship some. I even looked up fast sail ships and the name "The Cutty Sark" showed up as one of the fastest sail ships. It was also a pirate ship.

The only other thing I'm thinking of on this desitng of the ship is how does the ship reverse or slow down?

I mean its a flying wood ship which goes against anything in terms of reality, but it feels like the ship needs some smaller engines that can be used to slow it down or reverse direction. Or something at least.

In terms of guns you don't have much to work with in terms of the size of the ship and the amount of detail you can convey in terms of weapons on the ship.

Personally I would put it on a brighter background so the design is more visible, and then just simplify/clarify the lighting--what are the major forms and how are they lit? You can also try looking up artists who paint ships and sails well like Montague Dawson.

Wow, you guys have been an incredible help. Thanks a lot, I knew you all would know more about this than me.

I wanted the ship to have this kind of feeling where it is coming towards you but raised the camera so you could see more detail but I can see how my drawing makes it look toy-ish. I'm trying to figure out how to make it look less like that but dam son i dont know yet

>>2916779
>>2916816
o my dam, this is pretty much what the client told me and wanted the ship to be longer (although he did want the back to be higher) but I basically told him "no" because he already approved the sketch and time constraints. I don't know a good way of making it look longer without changing the perspective, I might be able to change some of the details and make the back look shorter to give the impression that its longer.
I'm gonna put the mainstays on, client just asked if we could show the back more so I said when its colored I'm putting them back cause you'll be able to see the back better when its colored.
Thanks for the ship reference! That's a good one and will help with the proportion.

About the ship slowing down- you do raise a good point, if I can I'll add more engine devices around it.
>>2916847
It needs to go both on a white and black background but was originally for a black one, I am struggling with this because it does look quite different when you switch it. You're right, I think I'll keep it on a gray background and fix the lighting afterwards, I was just afraid that I wouldn't be able to.
Thanks for the artist's name! That is really helpful and his paintings are awesome.

Looks great so far. I couldn't help but do a little painting on top to try some stuff out. I think instead of focusing on specific textures and digital tricks like bevel and emboss, focus more on big picture stuff.

Changes I made:
-clarified a lot of the shapes and made them "cooler" and more designed, both to improve the read and make things seem more interesting. The hand feel very dull at the moment, try to bring in more interest and structure.
-brought out the reds in the face and reduced the red in the background to get better temperature relationships
-filled the scene with slightly more light and colour, and made sure the shadows were going to black
-small changes in materials, adding speculars to the eyes, getting the teeth smoother etc. just adding variety
-general atmosphere to tie it all together

Hope it helps!

Thanks a tonne dude!

The clarification of the shapes and general atmosphere stuff were things that I would never have thought of if it wasn't for you. I always struggle with shape definition, colors and atmospheric depth and your overpainting illustrates these things perfectly! I really like what you did with the horns and the nails too.

Some of your ideas were things that I was going to do anyways like the speculars on the eyes and the cooler background but it's definitely nice to get a second opinion on those things too.

Aye... I'll be back in another 10h. with a (hopefully) better and more balanced piece.

Doing all those details is arguably the easiest part of image making. Real pros can indicate that shit with a couple of strokes. I wish I could do shit like that...

>>2918481

I did a 5 min. value overpainting on your piece. I think it looks pretty good over all but you could use some more mid range values on her skin. The same problem persists in the saturation of color on the whole piece. A good idea might be to do the initial value block in with the yellow ochre-ish color you used on the background and bring in the skin tones later on in the piece. Don't mind my horrible airbrushy strokes though. It's just a faster way to illustrate the problem. Your brushwork is much more interesting.

You may think this is all you can do, but study some fundamentals and you will be amazed at what you are capable of. If your are going to study ir copy, always do it from someone way better than you. That way you actually learn something and have room to improve. Have a standard.
Also, don't draw with a fucking mouse. Clearly you have a camera, ink a drawing and and transfer it into the pc. But don't worry about coloring until you learn how to draw.

What will be your value range? Where will the light source(s) be? How can you make the idea and image read as clearly as possible? What colours will you use? I think that you might be obsessing over accuracy. I don't know where you're taking this piece, but if its practice you might gain more from trying to eye the proportions and perspective intuitively. I mean, it looks good. But it looks like a lot of time too.

>>2919201

>>2919399
Looks great! An additional midtone in the lighted areas of the face would go a long way. Maybe establish some highlights (crest of brow, tip and bridge of nose, lower eyelids and where the chin meets the bottom lip are typical areas)

>>2919897
You're kinda right but that doesn't mean your drawing doesn't look like bukkake. Try making the water streams lighter than skin in the light and darker than skin in the shadow, and let it disappear in the midtones.

This is what I did instead of listening in class today.

I think you've pushed this one as far as you can with your current abilities, and it looks good.

I'd recommend at this point starting to paint from life and masters more, and focus on getting values and colours accurately without using any layer modes or tools like dodge or burn. Right now you are blowing out highlights and jumping to black in the shadows, and there is too much focus on texture. These are all sort of beginner digital mistakes which are holding you back because otherwise you are painting at a decent level here.

I don't really paint stylized stuff or children, but thought I'd chime in anyways.

Basically from a painting standpoint you are using too small a brush and just scribbling it everywhere. I would recommend using a bigger brush in most areas and reserve the smaller brush for key focal details like maybe a few strands of hair or details on the facial features. Elsewhere use as big a brush as you can. Everywhere you can focus on keeping your shapes more controlled and clean.

There's some small construction errors in the face, like the mouth feels misaligned and the far brow projects to much. I tried fixing it a bit but I am not used to children's proportions so maybe didn't do a perfect job.

Last thing is your use of values, I feel it is pretty good in general but you can control it just a bit more for the face. Look at how strong a jump you have from the light hitting the bit of skin above the lips, to how dark and grey the chin is. This is just a bit too extreme. Keep your values more consistent and controlled.

If you were going for atmosphere, I think it came across as more of a quickie opacity effect. Like a layering quick fix, eraser, some digital shortcut. I think the thumbnail reads well, at hi res the effect is lost.

There are a number of ways to fix this. I think with this style of drawing and illustrative approach could tidy it up. Cool beans tho

"hair anon hello"
This is the best example of me struggling with hair for a character. I was trying to find the right one for her.

Anyway, it just feels like I just can't capture the quality of hair that might coincide with "curly hair" or "short hair." To me it all looks the same (according to my drawing).

I'm not too sure exactly, I do a lot of hair studies, yet I can never seem to represent it quite how I want it.

hi there! these are actually some pretty cool sketches. i think you are onto something here. im gonna try to draw something to show how i approach hair. just wanted to let you know i noticed haha. i just need a few mins to put something together.

for now, i think that the most important tip to draw hair is to really think of it as one 3D object, kind of like anime hair, putting it into parts and... aaah its hard to explain in words. hold on!

OK FAMALAM HERE WE GO i hope i can be at least a little helpful! i made two little images for u that maybe explain my thought process with hair a lil bit!

i know my handwriting isnt very good. basically the point here is, you should find a good silhouette or shape for your hair first (thats what i meant with anime hair btw) so you have an idea how much space it fills up.
next important thing is to understand the weight of hair, heavy, straight hair fluffs up at the end, while really short hair just sorta stands up.. like in the image. (im bad with wordst) it basically bends as the weight gets heavier. its a bit different with afro and curly hair, there is so much air and poof in it that it stands up more easily and bends a bit less at the ends.

basically, understanding hair weight is really important.
next important thing is that hair can be treated like a 3D object. again, imagine an anime hair helmet and then imagine how light and shadow would be cast onto that. you combine those shadows with the partitions and the flow of your hair basically, to get the actual hair texture.

if you have a defined hairline you can easily let the hair "grow" from out of there.
the long middle parts of the hair are usually a good part to put in flat lights (if you have a simple front lighting and not some fantastic scheme going on. it does the trick to just show that someones hair is shiny) while its good to make it darker and more shadowed at the roots and ends of the hair.

i hope this is making sense bcuz i have more to come mang

here i have some examples (shilling) of my own hair drawings, because i find it really difficult to explain a lot of stuff without images going along with the text, haha.
hair silhouettes are really important to the character feel, basically when you have short hair, its not gonna hang down super straight, its propably gonna be a bit more chunky and bouncing up a bit. (hair weight again)
if you use very few lines to outline a silhouette for your characters hair, dont scribble into the silhouette randomly, it only makes it look messy. really pay attention how your hair can flow and fold and try to keep it "chunky" basically.

there are probably tons of artists who understand drawing hair a lot better than me (i really recommend studying loishes way of drawing hair, her art isnt always my favourite but shes really good at drawing hair)
hair color is a bit difficult for me personally, but yeah! i think this is mostly what i know about putting together nice hair shapes... i really hope this isnt too much/ or completely useless

I think you just need to clarify your values more. Everything is turning into a jumble of middle tones. Try getting it to have a more graphic balance of lights and dark. Well, I can't really see where the light source(s) is supposed to be located. But the characters feels very flat and pasted on since there's no shadows on the ground to connect them to where they are standing.
You might also want to add some rounder shading and perhaps even highlights to the people so that they'll feel less flat.

Please critique ! I left off drawing a few years ago and I'm currently picking it back up. My lines are scribbly I know. Suggestion om anatomy and lighting would be helpfull.

Perspective of the room done with reference, no reference for girl used.

I really like it. But the boy seems to be too frontal to be on the ground perspective wise. We should be looking down on him just a bit, and up on the monsters face a bit. Mainly you could fix this now by adjusting his feet to be covered more.

>> No.2924488

>>2924476
Seems like it should be a dynamic picture but it lacks a lot of dynamic in composition. You tried fitting the whole monster in the frame which cut him a bit short and chubby. The fins are way too stiff and not in motion. The monsters head is great, the girl itself too, but her neck should be limp or bent back way more considering the force that pushes her up in that manner. The water needs more clear boundairies. When the monster leaves the water he doesn't create a hole in it, he drags it out. Look at some whale jumping footage.

you should definitely use at least some kind of reference if youre going to draw a figure in perspective and you havent drawn for awhile! here the perspective is just totally off and proportions too and arm anatomy, as a result. if there really is no way to use ref turn your paper aorund while you draw so that you can see whether the perspective is good. for example when you turn the paper imagine youre drawing your character from the side leaning on a wall (well it's still gonna be a little different from when the character is lying down but its gonna help). if you want to learn how to draw perspective from imagination how about starting off with some cubes in space? REALLY great exercise.

This is nearly impossible to crit because we don't know what you're going for. Nothing in the image looks intentional, if the image looks as you intended it, at least to a viewer, it doesn't look like it.

Is it meant to be abstract? Is it meant to be a landscape? I'm sorry but you're utterly failed at either. It's difficult to critique a piece when there is no fixed point to start from. It's all bad. Sorry but you should spend some time in the beginner thread and really hash out some grasp on the fundamentals before attempting a piece that requires the use of a lot of them.

Right, I guess I assumed it was a spirit that only the children could see. In any case, the story/idea isn't coming across clearly to me. It more looks like a surreal painting where you slapped in something out of place into an ordinary scene.

A good trick to create a sense of depth is to vary the line weight according to the distance to a object. Thicker to the front, thinner to the back.
So the hill and the dude on the hill could easily have a bit thicker lines around them compared to the city in the distance.

And you should be able to get basic perspective if you look it up. Nothing fancy. Take 1 point and go to 2 point from there. You don't need to go full Robertson if you're /beg/.

you are focusing on the planes of the face, and a sweeping generalization of what a human should look like, which you base every drawing on.

That's fine, I do that too, but you need to have a much looser concept of how a person looks because you are so specific when it comes to "eyes look like this, foreheads look like this, hair looks like this", that you end up making the same face every time.

Try to really let go of those notions and focus on the individual in front of you rather than the individual in your head.

Jar looks very nice, same with the apples at the right

You completely killed your painting with those apples at the left though, you fucked up very, very bad there

How do you get so much accomplished within a 2-3 hour frame? I've started a figure drawing class and I'm really struggling to get much down because my lack of accuracy bothers me.

browsing tumblr and i literally thought "aww why did he put that weird blue shit on its neck" before realizing its not the same painting

Resist the temptation to "draw" the figure. In the first hour, ONLY measurements and straight lines --defining areas of shadow--. "Blocking in" is what I've heard it called, among other things. Its like building a map to then navigate through the details with. Obviously its still something I'm working on, but that method really levelled up my ability.

I like the palette and concept alot.
The legs of the guy sitting are very jarring and strange and in the wrong spot. Look up a reference for this pose.

is that water she is wading through? make it more clear what that is.

I like it

proportions and placements are good
I think its all about how you render it now.

i myself would put an eye glint on the side of the retina to the left like normal anime style.

im not personally a fan of using that saturated of a blue under and around the face. unless the background will be blue too then it makes sense

its nice

her body is twisted in a not pleasing way. unless that was what you were going for, I'd keep her butt in profile like the rest of her for this specific painting. Also bring the right shoulder back, because it looks like she's missing a titty, the face is pretty nice tho gj

I think maybe the table's design is a bit boring and I should add more elements at the top and bottom of the composition.
Anyway, what do you think?
