Basquiat only got well-known because he was a young black artist who lacked any formal training. Art critics at the time promoted the image of him as a "wild child" or the art world. It also helped that he was friends with and collaborated with Warhol, one of the biggest hacks and trolls of the art world.

This had led to mindless praise for artists like Chris Olifi, another talentless "artist" who is praised only because he's black and uses elephant dung in his artwork.

None of this makes any sense unless you read history. You can't look at it outside of a timeline. The rise of secularism during and after the renaissance lead to the disintegration of religion in Europe. Instead of people worshiping religious texts, you see people worshiping secular texts, and secular ideas, humanism, rationalism, etc. All of this art is a consequence of secular humanism. The irony of course is that despite claiming to put humans before literal interpretations of text, humanist art almost exclusively puts texts before humans.

Tom Wolfe wrote a great diatribe about this in "The Painted Word" but didn't really get into the whole rise of secular humanism in Europe, more focusing on NYC's art mart and "intellectuals"- the secular humanist equivalent of priestly caste. It's a fun read and I recommend it to anyone who has a good sense of humor and has an hour to spare as it's not only a short but fast read.

You can basically compare this slippery slope of art with lets say something like 4chan

>People had a high standard of posting
>Some retards could not keep up so they started to use things that are ironic in nature
>The ironic nature made Poe's law a reality and people believed the irony to be fact
>now the current state is that it's so far into satire that the new generation see's it as reality and know no other way to portray

When applied to art it follows the same path
People made ironic art to shit on the people with real skills, that ironic art became reality and now people have their heads so far up their asses that a fucking can of soup is the thing to define a century of new art

The only deeper meaning in modern art is the one that you make up to lie to yourself that the thing you're looking at has some sort of eccentric value since the actual reality that millions of people are looking at a can of soup is so fucking mindblowing that your mind simply can't comprehend the absurdity of the situation

What triggers me most is that 100 years in the future someone like me will be looking through a book passing through pieces which took a lifetime to make and finally get to the 20th century and as he turns the page from this beautiful landscape to a
FUCKING
CAN
OF
SOUP
The only thought that will cross his mind is
>What the fuck were these retards thinking

I pray that there is no future and that the sun will explode fairly soon because the humiliation of the future continually laughing at our huxley and orwell timeline will make me forever roll in my grave

Well illustration is rarely the finished product at this point, it's only valuable as an aid in the larger assembly line toward a finished product (movie, videogame). Art as a thing you just look at is dying. We're going to push the boundary even further with VR soon enough, they're already making interesting stuff with it.

I think the can of soup, the formaldehyde shark etc. simply represent traditional art shitting the bed which although ugly per se is probably a good thing because it will allow new things to take root
