Everyone in the art world is your rival.

You are supposed to feel the need to catch up to and surpass other great artists.

If you don't feel this, then I don't know how you can get better.

meme wisdom aside, if you need someone to push you you're not doing it right, not in the long run anyway. if you intend to pursue art seriously as a lifelong endeavor you can't expect anybody to be there for you very long.

I used to have a rival or two when I was a little bit younger. However, the longer you've been in the game, the more all your art friends branch out, change, and the 'rivalry' idea isn't as appealing anymore. A rivalry becomes kind of boring when your goals, ideas, and experience are so completely different.

I would definitely try to find somebody, though. At the very least you should be part of some sort of discord art-group.

This >>2914357 is accurate. I know that when Dylan Cole would teach matte painting and saw students comparing themselves to each other, he would stop them and tell them that once they finished the class they needed to compete against him.

This doesn't work because they are so far ahead. It's sort of like in a marathon, if the other runners are so far away that you can't see them you don't give a fuck, if you're running with a bro that you know and who's on an equal footing with you, you feel the need to keep up.

Before the advent of Facebook, back when forum culture still existed, I had a rival in the art section of a board I used to post on. Finding someone around your own skill level who's passionate about art and willing to experiment, really can push you to better yourself and inspire you to try new things.

It was funny how the psychology worked as well. He thought I was better than him, and I thought he was better than me.

nobody here has the spine to get a rival who is actually skilled.
they want someone who is worse than them so they can feel good about themselves, but good enough so that they actually can put in the effort without automatically receiving normie praise.

I swear to god if i can find someone who is around my skill level who can btfo me, and i can btfo them i'll fucking cry.

it's not fair. art rivals is they gayest thing ever that i'll never have b/c i'm above /beg/ and below 'make it'.

i've got it up to 16 hours though, i'll fucking show them who's boss.

>rival
Really? I wish I had a creative partner.
Someone to team up and do some short projects with. Brainstorming and developing worlds, characters, short stories, improving as we go.

I sorta do have something like that already, I earn my living giving life to a project with a friend who has solid common-sense and similar taste in artistic choices. But the theme and universe of this project are his, I'm just a co-author who decided to dedicate a few years of my life to help shaping it up.

Thing is he's too self-centered to actually care about any of my potential side-projects, almost feels like unrequited love.
We used to make plans of being a super creative and awesome studio before actually teaming up, but after this project is done, I don't see him genuinely wanting to do something else not created by himself. And I won't help with a second one, I'll just move on.

The whole idea doesn't even appease me anymore, I wouldn't want his fingers in my stuff after spending MONTHS asking here and there for him to simply read a fucking 5 pages script I wrote to know what my idea was about.

No idea buddies = no stimulus to draw anything that is not work-related.
If I ever become a supervillain, I can be your rival, OP.

If you can't expect to get this right, you ain't gonna make it. It's great that you at least have the courage to post your work. That's very first step to making it. The point of having a rival is that they're good at something you're not, and you're good at something they're not.

If your rival is better than you then he has no incentive to act as your rival.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ga8APtGhFys

Look at this interview, this is a good rivalry. A guy whose drawn and had fun with drawing all his life, vs a guy with immense talent but only started liking drawing after going pro. You can feel that both of them think that the other one has something that they'd want to achieve.

The three rivals of /ic/:
1. Shadman
2. Sakimichan
3. Sycra
The first must be defeated by gitting gud. The second can only be defeated by being gud and breaking down all your comfort zones. The last is only defeated by getting a decent job in the industry.
