I don't want to rain on your parade anon, but wait a day or two and then take a look at it in a mirror from a decent distance.

The linework is nice, but Jesus fuck the face is lopsided, the pose is stiff and the arms/hands are horrible. That's without mentioning the fact that Akko, a 12-year-old character, looks like she's in her mid-20s.

Yeah it sort of hurts to look at. It's cool though, just do the effects more subtle, and maybe the texture you have can be a bit less repetitive so it looks like it's aged paper or something and not some crazy vibrating noise.

Here's my quick take on it, I feel the lines are too vertical, splitting the image in half with that vertical line is a nono. I also made the flower into a potted one for quick readability, but yours should be fairy easy to tell that it's a flower once you add colors so there's no one clear answer.

Take this with a grain of salt I suppose, there are many different ways to approach a piece and this is just what I would have done.

Thanks for taking the time to critique it, that lighting setup you have looks so much cooler. I have a few questions though.

1. I find my mind "defaulting" back to the standard lighting setup most of the time, how can I "train" it to think about a more distinct lighting scene like the one that you did in the the example? Even when I try to consciously do one that's slightly different I feel like I always end up defaulting back to the same value setup, like the one I attached here.

2. Same for composition, I find myself struggling with this most often as I am aware of the problem but always find myself wanting to show off the loli's features and body while I try to position them on the canvas. Is there any way to train my mind to think out of this? I've tried looking at/studying movie scenes and such, but it just dosen't seem to click yet.

Again, thank you for the time, you've opened my eyes a bit; I feel like I can climb out of this plateau if I get this down right...

>> No.2906878

Nice! I feel like the right leg should scoot over a little closer to where the braid is, it looks like she's about to topple over from not being balanced. The pose is well drawn, but it makes her look like she's about to pee her pants, but if the right leg scoots over a bit more to the right that might help open up the stance and not look like she needs to use the ladies room. Other wise great job so far!

I would study more artists and look for more reference paintings or reference photos while working. You will get some new ideas by doing some research first on how you might want to approach the lighting. Looking at lots of movies and photos and paintings and life will give you ideas of different situations. Look at both how other people have handled giant things (transformers, king kong, godzilla, etc) as well as ordinary imagery.

Otherwise just think through the things as though you are shooting a movie. Where do you place the camera? High? Low? Close? Far? What sort of lens is it? Where are the light sources? What time of day is it? Is it cloudy? What is the exposure? etc. and try to find interesting choices for those things. You can also think of stuff like "I want to practice painting a high key image", or "I want to practice painting a dark rainy scene", or I want to paint something filled with dusty rubble and lots of diffusion".

Personally I'm a huge fan of Craig Mullins since he brings in that variety to his work and can pull just about anything, so I look at him often to remind myself of how I can change up my image setups.

Keep in mind too that you are painting the exact same scene each time (giant loli destroying city) which means by its very nature it will start to get repetitive, and it means you need to work that much harder at bringing in more variety to it and breaking out of your comfort zone.

I have some of those "size" feeling pictures saved at home, but I think it'd probably be a better idea for me to look at more movie stills.

For the camera thing, that's how I plan out my scenes most of the time, but like you said, the subject matter is the same all the time. It's challenging but I really want to try to make it work.

1. As others have said, your figures are very stiff. You could push the dynamicism by introducing contraposto, try to incoporate more twists and turns in the body, break symmetry. You have consistent anatomical issues, like in the shoulders, arms, and knees. Bodies are very thick and muscular. I'm not sure if you are going for loli body or bodybuilder at this point?

2. Check the light logic in your environment. Consider the drop off in intensity as objects are more distant from the light source and the atmospheric perspective. For example, the edges of the rim lights on the structures are too soft for something in the foreground, but not crisp enough for being so close to the light source. Also you might want to look into the shapes and size of said rim lights because they lack variation. Try using different brush sizes. Other than this your lighting is passable

3. Soft and hard edges. Everything looks like it's in the middle, just slightly blended, but not quite smooth or crisp enough.

4. Texture. You sort of render everything similarly? The brush you use adds texture, but you're using the same thing for skin and concrete and fire.

5. Compositionally, having the figure dead center and cropping off part of the horn is not good. The airships are similar sizes and placing them all around the foreground, midground and background could add interesting size variation and sense of depth. There could be more negative space for the viewer to rest on as well, since you have a busy scene occurring.

As for color, I cannot say much. You have a good palette, but just need to work on the rendering and issues mentioned above.

Really force yourself to do other subject matter, other styles, other techniques, because you've fallen into a comfort zone and you're not challenging yourself the way you need to be. Attend a life drawing session, study real things, not photos. Good luck.

Hiya, this isnt perfect but what I think you could do to make her more bangable is lengthening the limbs and more attention to bony landmarks on her body.

1) I see you're already offsetting the curves you use to draw her arms/legs so thats good, but throw in more straight lines in her anatomy to compliment the curves. If you exaggerate it a bit around the joints and parts of the body where you know itll be a bit bonier, you can make her actual curves look much softer and appealing by contrast.

2) Exaggerate the waist a bit and how the torso connects to the pelvis to make her more feminine. Using boxes to construct the ribcage and pelvis instead of ambiguous round forms also gives you greater control on how thick/wide her body is.

focus on the lines. It needs to stay sharp and only be thick when needed. Maybe try a bigger canvas plus your character's face is distorted - you should paint on flat surface monitor directly parallel to your eye level to avoid distortions

I'm not really sure but I think you're supposed to paint a feminine character, those proportions are very manly. You need to draw more cute pictures and not be too influenced with manly pics. Maybe you're influenced by naruto art but that's just my guess.

idk if this helps but i did a redline, too
a couple things stand out about your initial drawing
a ribcage is basically a bunch of ellipses stacked on top of one another, but they connect to the spine & therefore have to correlate to the position of the neck. when you raise your arm like this girl is doing, you can see more of the ribcage beneath the socket of the arm.
the navel is in a strange spot. normally a navel sits directly in the center of the natural waist. i think her head could also be shrunk a tad because right now it looks like she has an excess of forehead.
the right arm looks like an attempt at perspective, but if that's so, the forearm should be larger than the tricep.
also, the knee should bisect the leg. meaning that the calf and the thigh should be *about* the same length. right now her left leg is looking a bit short.

her left, our right. i'm sorry, that was probably confusing. i meant 'our left' as well when i was referring to her leg.
keep at it, I'm looking forward to seeing the next update. this has already improved significantly from the original drawing.

>>2907971
i think you're overworking the fur a bit for cell shading. normally the darkest lines in the fur (the original lineart) wouldn't even be drawn in, but they're a good way to determine the direction of the fur's parting.
since fur is pretty voluminous (compared to cloth or hair anyways) I usually just leave the main mass of fur alone and focus on creating shadows that give the impression of depth.
also i think you could simplify the shadow of her hands as well. since she's holding them up, the shadow will be smaller, and I think it would come forward further on her legs as well.

the lone problem I have:
the skirt looks great up until it gets to the sash. Then, somehow the skirts becomes...wider than it was before, and none of the drapery below the sash seems to correlate to the wrinkles in the fabric above.
If you wanted to rework it, I feel like there are a lot of really dynamic options to explore with her skirt! just follow the same swooping lines as you illustrated in her skirt above the sash, keeping in mind where the tension that creates wrinkles in fabric is coming from.

im trying to find a painting style that im comfortable with, i used to just do cel shaded anime style with minor gradients, but now im kind of stumbling when i have to add in far more light logic and color theory to an imaginary object and actually paint things instead of adding a giant shadow shape and call it a day

you are replying to the wrong guy

all the edges i have are indicated by lines as of now though so all the gradient forms are all rounded ambiguous forms from the reference material, like the arm and legs. Though for what its worth the gradients is just an easy way to map out the lights and darks before I really go in shape things

im definitely trying to emphasize edges and stuff with harsher contrast. idk it counts but i rendered that chest piece and the the general torso area with that in mind and im slowly moving to the stomache area and emphasizing the forms for my next step

I kinda hate that i never got into reading books and etc on Color Theory, Anatomy, Composition and etc.

Because i know i'd be the type of kind to obsess over making my art perfect. I love critique really, but never had a teacher or someone to tell me my art was shit. Feel like i could be better if i did.
