If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.

We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Messy lines can look good sometimes, but in your case, you probably weren't trying for that. So clean up your line work and don't have such spiky lines like on the back or the waist. Measure ten times and draw once. Go over line if you want emphasis. Also Loomis.

but for yourself you should improve that as well so you can become better
also the water on your picture doesn't look quite realistically, the only way it can reflect the trees like that is when the water is "still" but seeing theres a small "waterfall" there you should have made it more like pic related

im here trying to help people get better, and let me tell you, literally copying a reference is NOT improvement
you are only improving if you analyze the reference and then draw it from short-term memory while at the same time gets turned into your long-term memory by mileage

Nah, I just wanted to draw the reference.

For copying pictures, I guess I'm not a beginner.

But I can't really construct anything close to that from imagination. I'm still learning the basics of construction, perspective, and all that.

Here's my drawing from imagination. Look at that face! That's why I'm here.

But that portrait isn't helping me improve much, anon. These guys are right, I should be studying more and properly.

thanks, to be honest, i dont think really loomis works, drawing directly from references helps so much more, because you dont really have the "time" to do constant 3D shapes of faces/noses/mouths etc.
I've been only drawing for like 1-2 weeks now and I can alrdy draw faces(without much detail but still looks good) in less than a minute in frontal position, anything beyond that, be it 3/4 faces or in any other position, is extremely hard i do get a slight feel about how head shapes are suppose to be now, thanks to drawing from references but pasting a face on them is still hard
I think practicing faces in as much positions/perspectives is really key to getting the hang of it

The girl is ugly and the gent is charismatic, but some of the proportions are off indeed. That's because their noses are too short. The girl is ugly because of her nose and mouth being too big. Maybe at a shitty wannabe indie "game" company looking for game cards.
Ditch the ugly textures and bullshit brushes. Keep practicing painting with the basic hard and soft edge brushes. Keep practicing drawing because the drawing underneath the painting drags the whole thing down. Start over with studying. Drop the colors, drop the textures. Do some greyscale form studies and then re-do this whole thing. Your family and friends probably aren't telling you this but it's shit. Call me an asshole but I just want to help you because I see potential.

The most important difference is that you drew the head too wide. Compare the distance between the eyes and the hair. Then you drew the eyebrows to fill the space, instead of copying the ones your model had. Fix that, and the expression would probably be a fairly close match. The individual features are a bit off, but not grossly off, and what matters more for readable expressions is their relative positioning which you got pretty much right.

2) The hairs are too thick. I don't think I've ever seen individual hairs that thick irl

3)The artist you pulled as an example drew the hair in bunches (and also used a different brush? idk I'm a traditional basic bitch). Hair doesn't separate from itself that easily unless it's static'd up.

The art of animal drawing by Ken Hultgren is a good book for you.
I'd start with studying the basic forms of animals, it is roughly the same for all mammals, if I remember correctly, the book goes into it, or at least discusses basic feline, equine, bear, etc. anatomy.
Based on the drawing I think you need to familiarise yourself with animal anatomy, simple skeleton, major masses, etc.

If you get the chance, bring a sketch book next time you visit a zoo, seeign animals from all kinds of angles in real life is a great study.

Nah i wouldn't say either is superior than the other, considering there's many different kinds of charcoal and graphite )9B-HB-9H condensed/vine, ect). Also a toothy paper vs a smooth one can be a factor. I used gray toned sketch paper, 2b mechanical pencil, 6b soft charcoal, and white dry pastel pencil.

Ultimately it's just what you practice with the most, what you feel most comfortable with. I want to improve my skills with charcoal and coloring on toned papers, using white for the higher values. I love the look and it's been an improvement on my painting process as a whole.

What kind of pencils and paper do you use? A cheap pencil on newsprint is gonna look like shit.. even with a good amount of skill.

>I go about 20-30 minutes before I start to not care about the small details and start taking shortcuts and eventually I end up with rough sketch that looks bad overall despite my best intentions to make it good

It's a beginner's hurdle that you learn to get over. Drawing is a very meticulous process. Pro artists make it look quick and easy because of their mastery, but that's after years of deliberate and precise practice.

You'll have to learn how to extend that concentration on your work for hours. Set a goal for yourself to draw something simple like an apple or a bowl of fruit. Don't make it complicated. Your main goal should be to finish it, fully rendered.

If you can finish that and have it look nice and polished even if it takes hours, you'll understand the feeling of completing a drawing with your full attention.

Might as well answer both posts with one compilation (4000x4000 image, weighs 5.5 mb):
http://imgur.com/a/CaIgV

All of the images were drawn and painted by me from scratch. The zero point is when I suddenly decided that I want to draw. The third one is obviously a traced photo. The fourth picture would make your eyes explode instantly, so I tried to be considerate. 3.1 and 3.7 are numbered this way because I forgot about that crap. I got a tablet between No.12 and No.13 (12th picture is not included because I only applied some basic colors roughly). The 6th, 8th, 11th, and 12th weren't finished. I didn't apply any serious effort to the 19th, 20th, and 21th. I also colored about ten different pictures in total, not included in this compilation. Only three or so of them required manual shading. And that makes pretty much all of my rendering attempts from the zero point.

Now, I'd like you to tell me again whether I will never learn and/or improve and whether I learn rendering and proper anatomy quickly enough.

There's no order at all, you can do whatever you want. Seriously. It's recommended to learn perspective in the beginning because it applies to everything else, but it's also one of the driest subjects to learn.

If you want to draw and paint people, then Keys to Drawing would help you draw what you see then Loomis's Head and Hands after that. Portraits take a long time to perfect, so I don't know long you'll be on that stage.

Don't be lazy and tell yourself you are less than them and that you'll be contempt with mediocre portraits literally anyone can draw. Is there an ideal length for a practice session?

Is there a minimum length that sessions should be or am I fine splitting it up as long as I put the same amount of time in?

What would, would you say, is the minimum amount of time one should invest in drawing a week if they want to improve? I'm aware it's a 'you get out what you put in' sort of deal but I don't know how/when to be precious with my drawing time.
