>> No.2898044

>>2898035
with anime you have to understand emotion comes first and consistency comes second

if you want a emotion *awww so cute* you draw proportions closer to babies proportions, like shorter arms relatively to the head. If you want the opposite, to make a character imposing, you draw the head smaller relatively to the rest of the body

depending on what you want to push, you draw the point of reference smaller or bigger, when a point of reference is the things we, as humans, are easier to pick up in a subconscious level, such as humans, heads, hands, eyes etc

>> No.2898053

>>2898041

Hmm, it makes sense to not be really strict with proportions then. The problem is I like the female body, but find most faces/head disgusting. Incorporating just one aspect of stylization into a fully normal body would probably look like a nightmare.

Guess the answer is, as always, le draw and test it out someday u will learn XDDD how I hate art end my misery.

I agree. Grab a copy of candydoll models or japanese young gravure models but don't get caught tracing them for drawings or don't let the FBI park that party v& if your country has shitty laws for legal child models. You can ref them on google images and not download them if you're scared.

Anime proportion is closer to doll/mannequin proportions (almost impossible bodies IRL or AAA models)

But that's literally what 99% of anime looks like. Unlike western stylization, most anime doesn't stylize the human body much at all, it idealizes it. Unless of course your definition of anime is chibi or gravity defying hentai balloon tits.

Just focus on clean outlines of the anatomy and leave out most muscle detail inside the silhouette and you're good.

I don't understand: what you're describing sounds to me like a caricature made in a realistic style (on the left) rather than a stylized picture (on the right).

Could you give me some examples of art that's stylized but doesn't use symbol drawing?

Look up the artists that do character design for Disney films or other animation studios. They may draw an eye as just a few lines but there is a lot of knowledge behind those lines and it will be different depending on the character or the angle it is viewed at. Looking at comics might help too. I like Moebius a lot for very simple faces.

not the anon but to me style must always be consistent. If you have different styles they must each be consistent on itself. Consistency is practiced by drawing same stuff every time. What is it that you draw all the time? is it boobies/flat women or muscular men?

symbol drawing or simplified styles are preferred in the industry because you don't traverse the uncanny valley with simple lines. Semi-realistic styles like datura, redjuice, or illya are heavily stylized and perfected to avoid the valley.

If you can't notice the unfriendliness of the one on the right (of >>2898817 ) then you're not ready to draw semi-realistic styles or the uncanny valley welcomes you hand in hand.

Try capturing her likeness first by copying and and looking for what makes her 'her'. Try copying, THEN stylizing. What I notice in your drawing is: Hair looks flat because of little contrast, she looks at a different direction, nose points forward instead of slightly up, colours are more saturated.

In my first draft, I explored the shape of her eyes (wings and bags), face (kinda tilted), nose and mouth (relatively broad, possibly because of tilt). It's horrible. But hey, it did its job.

In my second drawing I tried full on weeb fake 'anime' stylization. Completely failed. Eyes too big, shape of her face was wrong, went full voldemort and she wasn't showing off her chin like in the reference.

In the third drawing, I took a step back and went a bit closer to the ref. Problem was that the face tilt was lacking (shape was wrong too) and her confident expression was gone.

The fourth was my final draft. Focused on eyeshape, eyebags, slight tilt (nose and chin),expression and simplifying. Could go further than that, but I'm tired.

Does this help you out?

Disclaimer: I am merely a beginner who has no clue how it's actually done, throwing in his 2 cents. Just compare your grayscale study to my first drawing. I don't even know how you managed to do that. It looks cool.

Alright, firstly, you need guidelines to begin, as the hips are off-center from the rest of the body. If I look at this as an upright girl simply folding her arms, the hips are the main problem. If she's thrusting her hip, then it's not turning at an angle, there's too much going on in the pose, and the socks imply the legs are static.

There are no folds in the skirt, which is okay for the first few tries, but needs to develop into a 3D shape eventually. Her neck appears a touch too long, but the shoulders are forgivable. Use more confident strokes in the sleeves, and the face is lovely, as usual.

However, sketch out guidelines there too, as one eye looks smaller and lower. Cheer up, you can make it. Practice converting references to your brand if you need quick practice, and good luck!

Looks a lot with a scene i´m making.
Anyway, most of the time you´ll be creating poses without any reference, so use a light pencil and erase a lot until the raft of the sketch is more or less acceptable.
PCs and internet today allows you to easily find poses and pics to make collages to trace ontop, and you could also use a poser 3D software to create a reference if you´re having trouble with a specific scene.

but seriously i just looked at artists i liked, tried to analyze their approach, figure out what worked and why then try to transfer that train of thought to other pieces

i still have a ways to go because my drawing skills are particularly poor and it shows-- pushing paint around can only take you so far when you're not sure of the underlying form so it's definitely something i'd like to keep improving upon

i guess it boils down to not just "doing stuff" but making sure you're taking something away from the stuff you're "doing" and actively applying your newfound knowledge-- like if you tried to emulate a certain person's style of rendering, try to think about what worked about how you approached it and what didn't. Maybe next time you can adjust your approach to get closer to your goal. It's important to analyze what you need to do and have a directed approach to solving the problem, otherwise you're just kinda taking a shot in the dark.

Apart from people not taking an analytical enough approach to their art and other people's art I think the other common problem people run into is becoming discouraged easily? I's embarrassing to look at now but this was about 2 years ago when i first started trying to paint so i mean, just don't be discouraged when your pieces don't turn out the way you expected-- as long as you learned *something* it wasn't a waste of time.

Thanks. I've been doing that lately actually. Trying to emulate a person's style of rendering, it's so difficult. It's not even close, but I'll keep trying because I know that I didn't right this one time, however maybe the next time it'll be better.

Yeah, discouragement is hard to get through. It's like you spend hours and hours on something and it just doesn't come out right no matter what. Absolutely destroys me for a week at a time. You're right though, it wasn't a waste of time. It just sometimes feels like you might not ever get it correct. I guess it's a little easy to give up, three, four, five times. That's it and then give up. To continue on to ten, twenty, fifty, a hundred times. Maybe it's possible at that point. If I keep thinking it's not a waste of time, perhaps I'll find out. Trusting your own gut is difficult.

>> No.2899493

>>2899478
Right. It's discouraging but because it's discouraging that means there's hope for you. That means you fundamentally understand what makes what you made different from what you tried to emulate. Now you have to look at why it turned out this way. Was my initial sketch not precise enough so when I went to render I ended up guessing too much? Maybe I should spend a bit more time getting that right next time. Was my pose too stiff for the composition? Next time I should try being more loose and dynamic with my initial sketch. Does the piece lack volume in it's components? Next time I should simplify the forms more in the initial rendering stage to more easily grasp the form. Are the colors all fucked up and disharmonious? Maybe I should color pick another artist's work with a similar feeling I was going for and compare their color choices to mine to see where I went wrong.

Basically, if you're not fucking up you won't know where you need to improve and be able to take the steps to rectify those problems. The above examples I listed above are actually my own thoughts with regards to my own recent work, so I would also encourage you to look at your own works critically to help direct your studies.

Design wise, nothing in particular draws my eye. What I mean is, the silhouette is very weak and does little to tell me what she does as a character. Cosplay waitress? Idk
It might help if you exaggerated certain shapes to break up the silhouette.

You might be right there, but I have to congratulate you on the anatomy here. The face looks superb, without that more squashed look your work sometimes has, and the rendering is fantastic. Maybe check the construction of her right leg, as it looks a bit too cylindrical, but overall, the background gives the perfect sense of size, panic, and urban atmosphere. Before, there were really only wrecked buildings, so I like the addition of the active and crowded cars. Really good, in my opinion.

She's missing a whole hip. It's apparent when you look from the viewer's right; it goes from ribcage to a sliver of her sides right to the leg muscle. If you did indeed draw the hip, it's extremely poorly portrayed because it merges with the right leg with the shadow cast on her. As a direct result of poor shading on the hip (you used bad tangents), her torso looks comically stout.

Her neck is too short.

Your choice of colors for shading makes her skin very muddy. Try studying skintones in various sources of strong light (although the figure merging into the background with a slight blue hue may be more atmospheric in this particular case); perhaps not even from reality, but artists you respect.

Lay off on the black outline on the collerbone.

On the panel with view on the factory boxes have different sizes, and you failed at drawing boxes on a slope (at least it looks more like a slope than a turn).

But I'm just nitpicking; you did a good job.

Regarding the skin tones, I'll probably need to look for reference, but you're right on the figure merging into the background; do you have any good references for these?

It's just 50% of the canvas. I just felt like 100% was too much "in-your-face" when you hover over it.

I didn't really intend for it to be realistic. I just applied some shading/color practice to a sketch and this is how I would shade/render comic style at this point... Well, I figured it was alternative in that way anyway.

There's 1 problem with this drawing:

You posted it in a critique thread.

It's a finished illustration. A wonderful work. You should be focusing on characters and concepts, not drawing ability.

Every single comment about this drawing is full of utter horseshit. There is no goddamn problem with the hands, neck or "silhouette" (only an art teacher would say that).

Niggers, what makes a good face? I know there are quite a billion ways to stylize them, but 90% of you here are weebs and kinda gravitate to what I like.

So, I can't quite understand what is making this woman's face a nice face. Maybe the thin nose and slightly bigger eyes, but that's not all.

I've seen plenty of stylized eyes and bigger is not better automatically, what do you do there? Make the iris larger? The eyelashes? The form? Just the bottom part? Just the upper part? I want science.

You guys have 15 minutes to answer it. Starting now.

Doll like eyes with soft features are nice, but it's symmetry. The brain automatically finds symmetry really attractive, and that's why you like it so much.

Thanks for the compliment and the realistic bit. I'll try for a less stylized face next time, though. If you don't mind me asking, are you new here?

Anyway I dropped the early 00's comic style face for a more pinup-y one because I felt it fits the body stylization better, but I'm still not convinced by the raised arm.
Opinions pls?

What I have noticed is that bigger eyelashes seem to make a great difference. Though I am probably referring to something more like pic related. Its not about the eyelashes but about the make up.

Stylized in anime it looks like this. It's kind of like the make up that one would label as Egyptian. Cleopatra is a good example actually.
In anime for example this make up look though is created by their eyelashes and not really make up, although it looks like it.

>furryshit
Rarely forgivable, but points for entering a new realm with alpaca girls.
>graphing fucking paper
Heh. You're doing great so far, kiddo. Blog?
>tiny torso plus le thicc as torso legs
Anatomy sucks, needs work beyond entry-level "girls have breasts and four limbs".
>linework gets more intricate and thinner as you look upwards
>but the fucking feet are at le right angle
>and the jutting foot is thinly done
Atrocious in a way I can't even describe. Linework needs work, basically.
>decent human gesture and line work on the ears
It's like a consolation prize for the eyes. I get that it's a doodle, but please practice more. If you absolutely have to draw furry, look over the non-loli works of Kikurage (Crayon Arts). Study, and you won't face bullying because of a grubby picture.

Right arm looks like its using different muscles for the same thing, And, it seems like the face has the most fade, like she's disappearing slowly.

I feel that there is a great truism to the fact that over-rendered stuff tends to be more stiff than sketches, although I have seen few people able to achieve both simultaneously. Very few tho
