Something's broken, what do I do?

>The original developer of the site has taken a leave for quite a while, originally due to medical reasons. Progress on the site is almost non-existant at this point. You can try contacting him at @LavaFlake or emailing him at lava@lavaflake.com.

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>Your streak will go back to 0 and you will have to start again. No other penalties.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>There is no week system anymore, instead new users are given "streaks" based on the number of consecutive days you can submit without getting eliminated. (token losses do not reset your streak)

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

EuJaFuiHomem, use more curve in your work, you use to much straight lines, even worse they're mostly vertical, it makes your figure seem stiff and boring, also mind the perspective.

jerrybreem, you draw so many heads, yet you don't seem to improve, maybe you even get worse sometimes. your front view lacks symmetry, your shading is half-assed and why are eyes in your studies often look better than when you slapped them into a face, where they tend to look flatter and have the same shape everytime. how about trying something else and come back to drawing heads later? like gesture drawing because your lines seem to be stiff.

finlay, that head with the shading looks like the the rightmost eye is really deep in the skull, and the lack of shading on the lower half of the head throws off the rest of the shading.

Bigger canvas, smaller brush size. Turn that sketch into a proper drawing. You're wasting an opportunity to study the details.

Jeremias:
Draw through those heads, don't just copy the outlines. Project construction on the paper. Do everything you can to make the lines suggest 3D forms.

Merumera:
Double check the body proportions, you slip here and there. Introduce a proper lightsource and try to be more mindful of line weight, so that your drawings get more readable.

TekkyJSKURT:
Flip your drawings, never skip construction, always draw guidelines and stick to them, stop drawing flat front-facing poses. Boxes first, shit on top/inside. You can do much better than this, just stop being lazy and trying to skip steps.

My poor cebula baby, I hope you have some art friends outside of /ic/. This is a sad place full of sad people.
Study asaro head to get a better understanding of the planes of the head. Do some proper portrait color studies. Still lives look much better when done in daylight. Paint some copies of your fav digital paintings, it'll help you see what's missing in your attempts. Wish you the best of luck.

thanks for the advice. I usually construct everything but those were just kinda lazy gestures for the most part so I was just focused on finding the rhythm instead of constructing. I'll keep it in mind for the future tho, thanks for taking the time to comment.

I think it'd be in your best interest to go back and grind boxes for like a week or two. One of the biggest mistakes you make in drawing heads is that you don't line up the features properly in perspective, drawing a couple hundred boxes will help ingrain the proper method into your mind. From there move on to properly constructing the head, do not worry about placing the features on it, just focus on constructing the head as a 3d form. From there move on to getting the proportions right, those are also very wrong in your portraits and they throw everything off. Just focus on placing the guidelines in the correct spots from all different angles, after you get decent at that then move on to the features of the face.

As for shading, I think it'll come a bit easier to you once you improve your understanding of perspective and form. From there you just think about a singular light source and envision all of the various surfaces of the head as planes. The ones facing away will obviously be in shadow while the ones facing toward the light will be lit. After you get the basics down then you can move on to more complex light.

I think your biggest mistake is that you're trying to tackle too much material all at once when you don't have the foundation you need. Just take it slow and try to methodically approach it step by step. Work your way back up to what you're doing instead of just diving into it.

If you're going for a mostly frame by frame traditional type of animation then Tv paint is probably better. If you wanna do more special effects stuff and tweening then toonboom would be better.

Jerry you're a kool guy and we all want you to make it. I get that sometimes we have shit jobs that drain all our energy so that all we feel like we can do is survive. That sucks dick, and I wish anon had more to offer you than empathy and vague platitudes. But you're gonna have to put in the "push yourself" work(getting out of comfort zone, mindfully studying fundies, etc) at some point.

Right now I feel like you're just spinning your wheels. Your comment about shading, thats because, looking at your last submission 1.) you're only shading in one tone, and 2.) its too light compared with your dark lines. I think you should study the human head form(Loomis head & hands, no meme) a bit more, maybe do some more realist stuff, then go back to your stylization. I think your style is neat, but it needs fundamentals under it.

I just don't talk to my family about art at all, they see me drawing all the time but they never talk about it anymore. No compliments and no bullshit either, kinda prefer it this way so I can avoid all the stuff that's been happening to you guys. Last time I talked to my dad about drawing he said it was a waste of time and he thought digital art was super easy to do like the other anon said.

However, and this especially goes for your faces: you seem to have a hard time making things look symmetrical from an angle. Try to keep it in mind while sketching and I doubt it will be a problem for long.

Yeah, I understand that Jerry. Don't you think schedules are too much though? We have to start small. Like daily plans instead of big plans. Just knowing that we'll be able to do say an hour or two hours of drawing today is already a big achievement. Do that for everyday and vary it up? That's huge achievement especially considering jumping out of the comfort zone is no joke.

Discipline I think works similar in that it's built off of small steps before we can do large steps. I'm not really sure why, but smaller payoffs in the beginning help before having larger payoffs later but at a higher time cost.

I have yet to re-read his books though mainly because I realized I don't want to draw vehicles, so full figure studies every single day. Except for when I do a room or something like a cityscape. I think sticking through with it is a talent on its own man. It's easy to just walk away after a slip up, but being able to come back to it after successive failures, and keep on going, it's a sign of some discipline. Imagine all the people that gave up after a week, a month, or half a year. Just imagine, now that you're already miles ahead of them cause you didn't quit.

So you got the right mindset, enjoy the journey, it's the most important part of it all. But don't forget to look back every year or so, and see how much farther you've come. A lot of self reflection goes a long way.
