I mean I've had this tumblr for 4 months now and it's kinda barren. Most my portraits take a lot of work because my sketches are always cluttered with symbols unless I spend a good deal of time on them.

Mostly animation-friendly stuff with flat colors. I'm hoping to get into the animation industry as either a storyboard artist or character design and those job positions often value speedy drawings with cohesive ideas more than detailed renders.

SVA was a mix of okay. I was not big on the humanities classes and whether or not you do well in animation depends on the teacher (It didn't start to click with me until third year of school), but most of what I draw now stems back from SVA, so I can't say I regret it, or else I'd have nothing right now.

Still a hell of a tuition, though.

Hey OP there I actually went to community college for the first two years, and didn't pick up drawing until my second year for fun but then applied to ACCD's illustration program and got in by a miracle. Went 3 semesters (two years) and then took a break and here I am about another year and a half. I mean 6 years altogether I never went 8 years. And yeah I need to get my shit together...wonder if I could even get into entertainment design as an entry level portfolio. Those guys were amazing, illustration was more or less around where I was and the standards weren't as high IMO

Yup! I did have a serious bout of depression that I stopped making work between when I left art center and almost an entire year and a half after and I'm now getting back on my feet. Talent is very real, I had some students similar to where I was when I entered but within just a couple semesters, despite pulling all nighters just like them and trying to work smart+hard, I was still surpassed very far. One of them went from 0 followers to 30,000 on FaceBook in three years lol. Stick figures to pro....I wish I had the brain for that.

If it makes you feel better, Craig Mullins was considered untalented. He was at the bottom of his classes at Art Center and had multiple teachers tell him he should leave art. It took him a lot longer than other people but he's also risen a lot higher. He's talked briefly on talent in the past, and basically says that without it you can still become a solid professional, and it probably only really matters when separating pros from masters. He also has said that what matters the most is whether you have it in you to keep pushing forward and working non stop for decades on end and to maintain your interest and drive. I know he also likes talking about Bierstadt's career path, because he was a really untalented painter for years who suddenly at one point had things click in his brain and almost overnight started to produce great work.

Anyways, there is still hope if you really do want to succeed. It won't necessarily happen soon or easily, but it can happen if you want it bad enough.

Your stuff is good buddy, colours and handling of media is fine but things don't feel quite as solid as they could, you always have to remember to break things down mentally to the absolute most basic form, even if you don't bother with construction that much on paper.
