you can only cross hatch something in one area four times. | _ / or \, so assuming you've already hatched the object with two lines according to the form, to darken an area you just do one or both of the other two types of line

a lot of it is just following form, as if you were making a mesh on top of the object with the lines, but some lines taper off and don't go all the way around the object.

The hardest part is making sure lines you hatched on one side of an object match up with lines you hatched on another side of the object. that part still eludes me.

>> No.2868428

>>2868397
Try not outlining the form and pay closer attention to fading from one value to another, the outlines and blocky shapes destroy your depth. I've seen your paintings so I think it's intentional design choice like Cezanne but I hate the wonky looking plates and stuff , I'd rather you show the contrast between the organic and geometric shapes.

that first head is really retarded looking. first of all we wouldn't be seeing her right ear from that perspective and it's way too high. her left ear is too close to her left eye. her jawline isn't in correct perspective. her mouth is off center and is just floating on her face. a head isn't a toy where you can put the facial features wherever you want, like mr. potato head.

your linework is nice, but you're just another fuccboi who puts linework before strong drawing skills. gain some real observational skills, read LOOMIS, stop looking at anime.

You'd expect the first few drawing of the season to be complete shit since you're a bit rusty from not doing any live drawing for a few months. But they are often much better than the ones I did before.

Perhaps a pause can be good to let things settle a bit from time to time.

The bright saturated contrasts etc. I have a more realistic grounded aproach and really know my fundamentals and I love this shit. I would love to see your development through the years. Fuck the hate bro. You've got potential and a good eye for this for sure.

My dude, Brian, you gotta find another subject, something contemporary, something that interests you, that will say something to the viewer. Reproducing these still lifes over and over again (not exactly reproducing over but food, material, and vases) isn't saying anything.

I suggest looking into one of your interests outside of visual arts, be it political, psychological, or environmental it's worth looking into, explore some concepts beyond what is in front of you, literally.

You're already very skilled in painting, so I don't think it should be an issue to figure something else out. The only thing I see being an issue is conceptualizing ideas. The more you work on conceptualizing, the better you'll get.

This painting is beautiful, but I'd hate to see talent like this going towards painting bread forever. Just consider what I've said, don't take it as an insult. :)

You need to work on composition.
Avoid having the horizon line split the canvas in equal halves, that cancel each other out.
You should lead the eye by creating asymmetry and hierarchy in the composition. Your major shapes are nearly identical in size. The wall stops right in in the middle of the picture, and suggests a centered plumb line. This along with the centered horizon line forms almost a crosshair dead smack in the middle of your picture. It's a very efficient way of killing any dynamism.

You should be mindful of your value grouping too.

If you're still having trouble with heads you can go look up "Huston head construction" on youtube, it has head construction drills towards the end, too so you can practice what you learn. 10-50 head constructions a day for a while will fix you up quick. You pointed out a lot of the issues by yourself which is excellent! One thing I might add is the girl looks really stiff. Now I don't know if she is anatomically strained by the thing coming out of her mouth, but if I think if you drew her strained in some way, even subtly (arching back and some expression on her face) she might seem a bit more "fluid".

The yellow creature is very charming!

It would be cool to see this drawing redone if you happen to want to explore it again.

Hi anon, here's my take on it, broken up into stages. Stage 1 is changes to the overall proportions, stage 2 is a rendering base and stage 3 is a lighting suggestion. If you like it and have any questions let me know.

Wow! Not the guy you're replying to, but thanks for posting this and a breakdown. How can I get such nice forms and brush work? Do you always go for a indirect/overcast lighting first?

>> No.2875000

>>2874991
I was using pic related brushes, the bottom one literally just for the bground in stage 3, painting on an ipad in procreate. If you're asking for methods of developing the skill or rendering forms, I'd recommend painting plaster casts from life, be it digitally or traditionally ( digital saves time and money, traditional is harder, moore fun and more satisfying) and trying out different lighting setups on them with varying ligh direction and intensity. Also the techniques used and described by Scott Robertson were helpful to me personally. Brushes are not important to me for modelling forms, but very useful for realistic rendering of textures and variations on surfaces, so there was no need for fancy brushes here.

Not always, and I wouldn't recommend doing anything always, but it's often a useful approach to isolate problems rather than trying to tackle multiple variables at once, especially if you wanna try different versions or if the subject is complex.

I would also add that the pasterns look too weak, especially when taking the perspective into consideration.

I mainly had issues with the fur and the overall perspective. The fur looks like fur you might paint on a side view. I can see a bit of dimension on the scruff, but the rest of the neck looks especially flat.
About the perspective, I couldn't really figure it out. I don't expect you to change it this late into the work either. I was just trying to figure it out for fun. I might get my dog to model out the pose for future reference, since I also had difficulties with this angle in the past.

I think I just realized how to do it.

I have to really think about box distortion in perspective to pull it off, and I have to stay true to my original gesture and get the proportions right the first time, or else I'm wasting my time.

I'm still curious if it's better to design a figure relative to the camera, or if it's better to design a figure relative to a box in perspective.

Does anybody know?

>> No.2875709

I've realized I'll never be able to really draw what I want to draw until I can properly distort my designs in perspective, and it's likely the same for everyone here.

Is there a good tutorial on this?

>> No.2875711

>>2875694
Perspective and Camera are basically the same thing, anon. You keep talking about a box for some reason, like you learned from Krenz or something. All you really need to do is play with proportions and foreshortening as well as making the sword and the arm wielding it the focus of the piece. A box distorts the sharper the box's edges converge towards the VPs if you wanted to know that. I honestly have not drawn this pose myself nor do I have a reference apparently aside from a visual one, but basically play with it.

I figure objective foreshortening isn't the key to making something look good.

I guess this what people were talking about when they said you don't have to adhere completely to perspective, and it's ok to break it where necessary.

Thanks man.

>> No.2875731

>>2875709
That's good, anon. That's the first step to understanding how to properly foreshorten your designs in accordance to perspective. It's actually not as difficult as it seems when you realize again that you have always seen the world with foreshortening. Sure, it's not as easy with an original design, but you can at least use a base for example a figure, and see how your design will fit on the figure at a certain angle. It requires a bit of thinking, but it's doable. The result is also very satisfying. There are probably tutorials for this, however, you can't always be looking for those quick shortcuts. Best thing an artist can do is draw.

You need to think about how the balance works. The guy looks like he would topple over trying to stand on those legs/two little dog nail things which also look like they are in your guys face but you flipped it upside down so it's not teeth? so what is it? what is its purpose and how does the head even connect to the neck. next time before you even attempt to draw out the muscles and other details, make a silhouette, have a plan for what you are doing. because right now, its like a man kangaroo rat bug thing without actually applying any of what happens in real life to make those things work: do your research first. so what i suggest, is take one of your silhouettes on the right, base it off a real life bug and take the shapes/think about how a bug would be able to work combined with a human and start from there.
as to your actual drawing, you completely lack any sort of shape design or cohesion, other than its vaguely scifi inspired and has muscles there is no sort of "flow" or emphasis on certain parts/focal point area. attached is a starcraft protoss concept art, although it is static it looks kind of like what you are doing, and it doesn't look like it will fall over on its face if it tries to walk. anyway good luck, let me know if you need clarification

not sure who told you that you aren't a beginner - maybe in comparison to ic you aren't because you at least aren't symbol drawing . but anyway, when posting your pictures there's no need to frame it like that, its distracting. next time make sure the lighting is good/scan it so you can show your full value range (white-black) not like sepia-dark brown? the background should be white if your paper is white.
when you draw, since you are drawing in pencil and usually people want to get to realism/believability that way and everyone has seen those amazing russian academic drawings, the shortcomings become obvious - you are copying photo of benjamin cumberbatch i assume, and it doesn't look like him at all. it lacks appeal because of the emphasis on details where they don't need to be: like the neck folds make him look like a turtle, we focus on the shadow area of the coat and the individual shapes/patterns of the coat rather than it just saying "this is a coat." it looks like the neck/head dont connect at all and that there is no real depth to your drawing. try not smudging next time and thinking about directional pencil strokes to show planes -> how would i draw in the strokes of the background so that the figure pops out?
for your oct anatomy final: you are missing a ton of midtones that would make it smooth/every shadow value is the same. learn about how to compare values and blend and planes and shit because its way too graphic. same thing about smudging and emphasis as well, find out which parts to emphasize, and the edges help make depth as well (why would both hands be blurred out especially, hes leaning down on the hand and pressing weight, the other hand reaching out could be a focal point.) and dont take pics with eraser shavings.
anyway, you don't need to render everything you draw, just draw a lot, construct some shit/figures, when you do render make sure to really be careful. i like your dog drawing tho its cute.

>"I-It was my first time drawing in Photoshop! It was r-really hard and stuff! Give me good, detailed critiques for drawing something that isn't even detailed enough not to be distinguished from a butt-plug!"

Shut up and go practice more, maybe do some life-drawing or whatever.

Besides that "qt sad grl with alien seized eyes crying" hardly is the most original of drawing subjects:

The flower things are made in such a different style than the face that it honestly looks plain bad and sloppy. But I think it's easily fixable if you go over the flowers and fix/redo them in a more similar style as the face, since that's far more interesting.

All newbies do this so don't worry about it. Just keep it in mind and try not to do it again.

Also, pic related is a great rule of thumb to keep it somewhat accurate with minimum effort.
