Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

→ →
There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Knowledge, understanding and critical thinking is the basis. You can always find a way to draw a straight line. At least that's what it looks like to me.

Must be why all the pros always use thumbnail sketches, they plan ahead and see how its going to go down before investing hours into a product.

First of all rotate the bloody image, you can do it in paint for fucks sake.
Make your lines darker along with the shadows. The ear has too many line-segments, redraw the lines to be curved instead of having many short straight lines. The eye looks like you used too many straight lines there as well, also work on the eye lashes and eye brow, the brow shouldn't look so neat, hair curves and changes thickness. The eyelashes shouldn't just be a series of 'X's, look at how they're facing, they shouldn't be constantly cris-crossed. Above the lips you should make the divet more pronounced; it's actually a hard crease but looks too soft but this could be the result of the light source which is not at all clear for the lips & nose aside from being above the nose. The viewrs right side of the upper lip is also large than the left and the bottom of the lips have too faint of a line to distinguish. Over all you need to work on making lines and shadows darker and to make your line-work curve more naturally.

Okay so the first thing I notice is that it's too grey. You lose the form when it's too grey because you're not conveying the darks/lights enough. Remember that the body can be broken down into planes where light hits directly, indirectly, to not at all.

I did a paintover of your drawing. I'm still new at this myself, so I can't say mine is totally correct, but I think it helps convey the shape of the form a little better. It's hard to tell where your light source is but if we assume it's on the left like this, then we can see that the light hits directly the highlighted areas, then gradually recedes to darker values as the planes of the body move away from facing direct light.

If you push your values a little more, add more contrast, your drawing will start to look more 3d. Also, remember that there are no black scratches on the body, just value changes. So there should be a lot more blocking in of values on the body rather than small patchy areas of black lines.

>> No.2869406

>>2869392

Check the Proko head construction video. He explains Loomis' method.

Right now you're not drawing the form as a 3D form. The proportions are also off. The circle is meant to mark the thirds of the face. The circle's center line marks the brow, the bottom the nose, and the top is the hairline.

You shouldn't be starting your circles with a compass either. Rely on making circles yourself as well as you can. Which sounds ridiculous, but it's another part of the process anyway. Shoot a circle out with your compass and keep trying to replicate it over and over.

I personally prefer the soft "t" over the "cross (+) - since the forehead is round anyway. Your chin area and cheekbone are running away and the circle for the side area is too small and a bit missplaced. I don't know how to take that.

The Loomis method is deceptively simple. At the end of the day you're still drawing and places shapes and then drawing faces, which are complex and difficult.

Perspective isn't really this set thing that you can use so simply with something like photoshop. It's about understanding the world around you and in your mind so that you can accurately represent onto the page you're drawing on. It's a lot of mental work that if you learn, can apply to everything else you come across. Frankly, learning perspective just by itself is a bit dry though and boring without applying it to anything. So draw from life along side with it and it'll help a lot especially with relational angles.

>> No.2869476

If you go to FZD school of Design website and check the syllabus for the 1 year diploma, you'll see ''To learn perspective, even the most advanced concepts that are not usually taught by schools''.

So yeah, perspective is one of those things you gotta know inside and out, and challenge yourself to understand it by doing crazy projects like 30 or 40 hour long works where you map a house/temple/city that you use a reference (not copying, but as a guide)..etc all correctly in perspective with a shit ton of detail. That's how they get so gud so quickly. If I asked you to draw me a car perfectly in perspective, could you do it? Or would you get lost in the grid? If yes, then great, go learn something else, if no. Well, time to keep grinding brah.

I am jumping on the boat, I suck. I've spent 4 hours already trying to build a lighter perfectly in perspective using a reference and it still sucks, but shit, I ain't going to give up. take this guy. its relatively the same style of landscape its just in the painting the far stuff is washed out white in mist so it looks further away. a few other polishing techniques too make it better but the perspective is there in the old one. lining to the VP for 40 hours didnt help him paint that, it was learning to value, colour, polish etc.

If I were to construct things like this traditionally, should I be using a ruler? I feel like there's debate for both sides. Using a ruler focuses puts you on autopilot but you can focus solely on perspective. Freehanding it seems better for the long term (along the lines of Scott Robertson, Dynamic Sketching, etc.) but the emphasis is less on the fundamentals of perspective and more on getting your lines right, which in the same is also a good skill I guess.

For such a big project there is no shame in using a ruler, I am certain they use one. The student who wrote the blog I shared earlier says they are done with a ruler in A3 paper.

Freehand perspective is of course incredibly useful, but I suspect that's more of a ''let's increase our work-rate kinda skill''. As long as you are applying the new found knowledge of perspective, and actually understand it. I can't imagine how using a ruler is an issue at all.

It's normal to rotate. If it helps you make a straight line freehand then it's fair game.

Practice what you can't do, though. It wouldn't hurt. Unless somehow it does. Then just rotate.

You should be able to make relatively straight lines from any angle, but the real point is to be able to draw them at all.

See the dark area above the eye? Yours is huge compared to the reference.

That area is actually the brow ridge of the chicken that is bulging out. The dark shaded part is just the underside of the brow that is not being hit by light. It shouldn't be that large.

When you're blocking in your shapes, also think about why the shapes are what they are. What is the form that your blocking in? In this case, it's a brow ridge right above the eye. That's also part of where the chicken's expression comes from. If you think about the basic shape, it's basically a tube or cylindrical shape. The top half is in light and the bottom half is dark.
