Go back to the fundamentals. Spend at least a couple of months getting them to stick in your head so it becomes second nature.

Learn how to construct forms with the use of primitive shapes, how to make organic forms feel 3D with the use of contour and texture, and shadow, how to make effective use of perspective, draw from life and photo reference, focusing on what primitive shapes the subject is composed of.

There's a lot to learn, and it can be quite mundane, but you won't get anywhere unless you put the effort in.

It's all built out of perspective. Everything you make will be bad, ugly, and flat until you put it in perspective.

Check out this skull.
It's a box with a face, side, and back.
It has vanishing points, and it never stops having vanishing points no matter what angle it's at.

It's no wonder your heads look so flat and bad when you neglect the main thing that comprises everything you see IRL: Perspective. It's the only real way to draw.

Ever heard of smart goals?
When I stopped thinking of improving in a certain time frame and started putting in a number of hours a day into drawing, that's when I improved.
In order to achieve a goal you need to set it in a manner that you can track it accordingly.
Instead of thinking "I wanna draw so much gesture drawing this month and improve!!1", set a number of sessions of gesture drawing you want to do each day and then do them all over the month.

You only improve if you plan your goals and put in the hours. Not with that "lalala, I only want to have fun while drawing and draw cute funny comics and maybe I'll improve in a month!!" shit mindset.

Before that I saw it as the same thing as tracing.
The above one is a month or 2 before I found IC and the one underneath is a current project.

Like, I understand the importance of references, learning how to see shapes and things in 3D, learning actual realistic anatomy, etc, even if you want to do stylized work.

But if I already have a good understanding of that, if I can correctyl place basic shadows and light sources, if my drawings have already stopped looking like a flat symbol drawing mess and I just want to work on my personal aesthetic, do I really NEED to be able to render very photorealistically like that?

Legit question, I want to improve, but my end goal is not for my art to look like that at all.

Rendering photorealistically is hand in hand with rendering well. If you can learn to render well, then it's no problem, but there's also no reference for such. Reference from life is with no errors, so it is perfect to study from.
