It's extremely useful to be able to recognize vanishing points in real life. It helps your art because you already know what to look for instead of "making something up" yourself. It's called expanding your visual library.

I'm not discrediting vanishing points, at all! The standard way perspective is explained made me think there were only ever a limited number of VPs within the picture, when the reality is that each plane/object has its own VP, some of which happen to be the same point.

Then I had the issue of finding it hard to understand straight lines within real life, until I realized I have to combat the curvature of the eye to "see" them properly.

But again, I'm stupid because I've read "Perspective Made Easy" and parts of Scott Robertson's book and still struggle.

Points in perspective in the idea of 2 point, 3 point, etc aren't really rules of reality, rather they're just tool of making art that cover most subjects

All parallel lines converge at a point, that point being it's vanishing point

If all parallel lines in the image are the same parallel lines than it's one point perspective. There aren't really any good examples of 1 point

2 point perspective is where there are two lots of parallel lines in the image ie a box (technically this should be 3 point but so often the vertical parallel lines are too hard to notice so it's pointless taking note of them)

3 point is like a box looked at from above or below where it's vertical parallel lines are clearly visible

These are just tools to make life easier, not rules that govern the universe

In reality there are no parallel lines, in a cardboard box the box isn't cut as a 100% square it's probably like 0.000001% off and is actually more of a trapezium but it's so hard to tell with out eyes so we just assume they're perfect

Look at these boxes here, let us assume that all the boxes have been cut to mathematical precision and are perfect boxes. All the sets of parallel lines will converge and that point of convergence will be a vanishing point and thus adding a number to the number of points in perspective of this image (1 point, 2 point, etc)

Each box will have 3 points, the parallel lines that make up the vertical part, and the 2 sets of parallel lines that make up the horizontal parts. There are at least 6 boxes so that means that this image is atleast 16 point perspective.

I hope by now you're seeing how pointless this point system of perspective is when you try to plot everything like this.

The image can be simplified, the vertical lines parts of the boxes are all roughly going in the same direction (No boxes are being held really diagonally) So you can assume that they're all the same for the sake of making life easier that lowers the number to 12 point

Why 2 and 3 point perspective is so useful is because we all live on a flat plane (it looks flat from where you're standing) and most things like buildings and people are all on this flat plane. This means that all parallel lines that are the same as the parallel lines that point to the horizon than all those parallel lines will also point to the horizon.

The human mind only really needs to see atleast 3 points in perspective to see something as 3d (3 dimensions, 3 point)
1) x axis, horizontal
2) y axis, vertical
3) z axis, forward and back
But the point is all parallel lines converge at a vanishing point and depending on the number of parallel line sets you have that determines the number of vanishing points.

So say you have a box floating in space and you want to draw another box somewhere else facing the exact same direction but you don't know what direction to draw the lines
Take the box you already have and extend the lines until they reach a convergence point (the vanishing point)
You can then take this point and draw lines out from it to roughly where you want your new box to be and you can be certain that these two lines (the new box's lines and the old box's lines) will be parallel and thus the boxes will be facing the same direction

Also it's worth mentioning that 5 point perspective is a weird thing that our eyes do to perceive the world and can be easily drawn with a grid like this

As things get further away from the point where you're directly looking they distort in this particular pattern

Look at some artwork by Kim Jung Gi, he shows great skill in this type of perspective. If you pay VERY close attention to the angles that things have in a sort of 2d way of looking by observing the positive and negative shapes when drawing from life. Draw an observation your surrounding just like a kim jung gi drawing you will notice that as things begin to leave your line of sight they distort in that particular pattern. This is the elusive 5 point perspective.

The challenge is open for a few days, you could chalk this one up as practice and then do better ones and post the best, or even submit this one then update it if you make a better one before the challenge ends.

Also portraits are usually a long thing, if you can't take it further after 30 minutes it sounds like your initial measurements etc are the issue, not the rendering. Look up the Reilly method maybe, or see how oil paintings work from the shadows up.

You can draw on the web app but yeah there's no sensitivity. I kinda get around that by using a 1 pixel brush so you can just scribble around. Also the program really light weight, like barely 10mb if I remember correctly so it's not too much of a burden to download.

Hey guys just an update on the website I'm working on. Hate to say, it's not looking too good right now. The more effort I've been putting learning this shit the more I realize this website it fucking tough to develop. I've maybe put in 5 hours so far in from what I've learned, and this website is gonna take several hundred hours to complete,and there no way I can do this without dedicating full time and it's stressing me out as is.

My plan B for now is maybe use W site and host it for now. In the future I can learn at a more comfortable pace and update that.

I wouldn't say it's necessarily lazier. A lot of people do it without knowing the reason why like I did but drawing both lips kinda clashes if you're doing certain styles. For this one I'd work on edge control and perspective. For example, you have really sharp edges on the container thing which implies that it's some sort of octagonal shape instead of a round one but then the lines that connect the long bits to the flat part are rounded, so it makes the container look like it's supposed to be round while the other part suggests that it's more angular. Basically your edges are suggesting different types of surfaces.

For perspective it looks like all of your lines don't converge to the right vanishing point. Particularly the hood of the drivers area is pointing a little bit upwards whereas the container is sloped more downwards. Cleaner ellipses could also help and using a ref may help since the way you placed the windshield looks weird. It looks like it's going straight up and the hood is connected to it whereas the windshield is supposed to be a bit lower and the plasticy/metal bits connect the hood to the front of the car.

You probably already know the basics of perspective but try revisiting it. Work through Scott Robertson's book if you wanna try vehicles, try skimming Norling's book or Vandruff's course and grind a shit ton of boxes to internalize the right concepts. I kinda knew the gist of how perspective works but it wasn't until I did 100s of boxes that I was able to put on paper what I understood in my mind.

For this one I'd recommend studying anatomy and studying the skull in particular. It's stylized but I think studying the actual proportions and anatomy would help you. Perspective also comes into play here a little bit in terms of things lining up. Something that stands out to me is the eyes of the top right character, the right eye is tilted up a little bit and it makes it look flat as opposed to an actual eye.

In terms of value and form, I'm not an expert but here's what I think. For form it may help to try drawing stuff on paper with a pen and then trying to render it out by wrapping your lines around the form. This helps you visualize and internalize the solidity of the form. Oh and also try to visualize everything in planes, try to assign a light source and then before you start putting down tone, think about where the light would travel and whether the plane you're about to shade is facing toward or away from the light. Improving your perspective would also help you get a better sense of form into your drawings. Also your stuff looks kinda flat cause your strokes aren't wrapping around the form properly, all the strokes are mostly going in a singular direction that isn't influenced by the form of the helmets so it flattens it out and doesn't sell the 3-dimensional of the helmets. Compare the muddy shading on the top left helmet with the singular white highlight you gave the guy on the bottom left. The bottom left gives the viewer more information because it's properly showing the surface of the form and it's a sharp edge which tells you what kind of lighting we're seeing there. (Implies that it's a shiny glassy type material whereas the metallic texture of the helmet really isn't being implied)

For value, edge control comes into play a bit here. It also looks like your values are too uniform and inconsistent. Your values are sticking in the mid range, they're not going dark enough and they're not going light enough. Try to build up more contrast so you can really show the viewer the shifts in the form. Also think about where your light is coming from before you start adding highlights. The center middle guy for example, there's highlights on the front of the helmet as well as the back, this suggests he's being lit from both the front and the back but then we're not seeing that light hit the top of the helmet and we're seeing some darker shade on the bottom.

The gist of it is that I think you should think about where you're lighting is coming from and try to bump up the contrast in your values. Also try to stick with a singular light source when starting out since it's a lot simpler. To practice value just do value studies from well lit stuff I guess. I think maybe movie screen shots that you like would be a good thing to study.

You just have to find the right type of hugboxes. Ideally, it should be like the way they crit writing in schools. They give you a small compliment or comment on something that they liked but then they also tell you what isn't working and what you're doing wrong. That way you get a bit of motivation while learning how to improve at the same time. /ic/ goes overboard by just calling everything that isn't Ruan Jia shit and they'll even call him shit sometimes. When people see art on here they're less willing to accept any of its positive qualities and they exaggerate the negative qualities. It can be helpful at times but it can also be super demotivating since for a lot of people, it's the only feedback they get and it's all negative.

I guess I can tell a summed up story about my short 5 some years of art.

I , 18 at the time, went to a tech college starting in 2012 for a CG program with the intent to learn some 3D and motion capture(which I eventually did). For the first two years it was typical traditional fundie stuff like figure drawing still lifes etc.

I was bad at drawing(or at least worse than I am now) and I didn't practice or draw outside of class/assignments cause muh vidya. I didn't take it seriously. One day, during my second year, my professor called me out basically told me, more or less, that I actually didn't want to make it, otherwise I'd be taking it seriously.

I had a weird hate complex about me drawing growing up since I was always compared to the other artists of my family, notably my older sister and it ended up instilling a distaste for my own drawings as a kid.

Of course this set me off, I was dead set on proving her wrong, showing I didnt need to know how to draw well to make cool 3d character concepts and whatnot(and it's true, you dont need to know how to draw super well)

So come time my 3rd year and its the first time I get to dabble in 3D, mind you I haven't touched and 3D package before hand, and I kinda hated it. Or at least learning how to work in Maya cause getting over the UI and how to navigate was tough.

So I grew to a disliking for 3D as well. The classes were 4 hours a session, so we'd get breaks at the two hour mark usually, I'd typically doodle in my sketch pad and eventually I think 'Damn, drawing IS kinda fun again huh...'

So I start enjoying drawing again. This was 2015.

Come 2016, Im in my senior year, and well, I sucked. At both 2D/3D art. If there was a jack of all trades, barely average at them all, everyone would point you to me. I can do mocap, the whole 3D pipeline, graphic design, VFX, illustrations, you name it. But was my work exceptional? Forget about it, one of my classmates could do one of those better than me.

So 2016 rolls around, so does las. I join at the start. Been drawing everyday since(save for a few unfortunate) days, and man, I'm so glad that I've finally pushed myself to just do something. And I've come to realize through las that I really enjoy making characters. And over the past year I've come back to 3D after swearing "I'll get back into it I swear!" and I've been modeling some characters just for the sake of doing some 3D work. I feel comfortable with maya now, and Im getting into both zbrush and 3DSMax.

And that leads up to today. A whole lot of procrastination, laziness and lack of direction.

To that guy further up in the thread wondering about 3D; Just jump in man, the longer you wait, the later you start. Z brush is a powerful tool, and if you stick with it, and get comfortable with it, thats it.

I don't like to think "Man if I kept up with drawing these past 5 years, how good would I be now?!" cause sure, if I actually got off my ass and drew everyday starting back then, I'd be better probably. But what matters is that you start now. Cause if you don't you'll be saying the same thing a year later.
