Like in a WW2 game you can be a concept artist just by putting already existing vehicles in a set piece.

I dont know what to think about photobashing

I noticed a lot of concept artists using it and it looks really terrible and if you zoom in even a little into an artwork you just see a jumbled mess

But most of this Feng zhu guys photobashes seem to look okay, at least from a distance they all work together and doesnt look that bad.

IDK, I didnt even know photobashing was the name for that technique till this thread, still dont know if its more bad than good.

I mean this part looks really cool, photobashing is a cool way to get a nice looking image going but I feel like in some ways its not great for a "complete look" >>2862333

Most pieces of concept art aren't even meant to be shown for an outside audience. Their entire reason for existence is to show the CEO-types and art heads that this is what the creative writing team had in mind - and for the 3D modelers to get started on making it happen. A CEO will look at it for 10 seconds, give the green light, the piece potentially gets forgotten forever, and you get started on the next piece. In a job as quick as that you need to take shortcuts.

Ah I see that makes sense then from that perspective, its a way to get something out quickly for the purposes of a project with deadlines and shit for multiple pieces etc.

Anyways browsing FZD site http://fengzhudesign.com/gallery_page_02.htm I'm just blown the fuck away, I can see how good photobashing can look when used effectively it can add to a piece, and you do get a good comprehension of it immediately, but then upon looking for details you find buildings and stuff disappearing into thin air etc, so its a little jarring I guess but I guess thats no the point of photobashing like you said

I kinda wanna give a go at photobashing myself, it'll help now that I know what the technique is even called.

Though now i realize I kind of already did do this myself a few times messing around with paint.net, if this is what you would call photobashing (using clone tool etc) to make something look different but without painting anything just cloning parts from it or another photo, its fun if anything.

I'd love to do stuff like that then, I'm not really interested in making something completely from scratch all the time but for getting an interesting and cool looking image out that matches the vague fleeting image/idea I have in my mind and this photobash with some painting method of his seems really good for that now that I've seen more about it

Yeah I was not insulting photobashing as a method, it certainly is valid especially for concept stuff like this. But you should just be aware of what it is. He's taking a few photos of tanks, putting them over some photos of forests, colour grading everything, then putting some brushstrokes and grunge over it as well as some blurs and effects. Overall, it's a very quick'n'dirty method, but it gets the job done.

Yep I see it more clearly now, you can easily tell now its multiple photos, photos with filters over them etc, but yeah I'm not hating on this method either I'm actually growing to like it because it seems like a "quick and dirty" method to create something, some image that I have in mind besides having to fully draw/paint it because I'm not that good at that yet.

I dabbled a little into something like this a few times when I had this idea in mind as I mentioned in previous posts, mostly when I wanted to use the clone tool to create something new out of something already there (pic related) but this is way more advanced photo bashing than I'm capable of, and watching this latest design cinema video of his it seems like a very involved process, but very fun in the end.

Gonna have to give something like this a go myself, time to torrent PS I guess.

It's pretty obvious if you have experience in painting, especially when you can see it in hi res like that. Basically the photos will have different texture densities and resolutions than other parts of the picture. There might be film grain or colour differences too. The brushstrokes will be flatter and have way less information.

In that example everything is a photo (entirety of tanks and trees basically) except the grass, the fog, the dirt spatter, and then a few bits on top of the tanks like some bound light was added and some cast shadows over them, but they are primarily photo.

In >>2866755 the places with photos are the parts that have that grainy very detailed textural look, so all of the foliage in all sections of the image. Then on areas like the dirt ground a photo texture was placed there then it was painted on top, so the gravel-y bits are the original photo showing through. The same is true for the thatched roofs and corrugated metal. Then things like the vehicles are photos which have been painted on to change their shapes a bit, and the rusty cylinders on the left and the fallen thing in front of them are mostly photo as well.

Uh, yeah. Okay. I'll just trust you on this one. Maybe one day I will reach your level of understanding and be able to decypher art like so. You sound like a pro though...

>> No.2866817

>>2866808
Well I am a pro, but I don't think you need to be one to be able to recognize photobashing. It's got some very distinct qualities to it that make it fairly easy to identify in most cases, especially if the image is visible in a large resolution. It's a little bit like telling if a painting is digital or oils--to a layman they may look the same but it honestly doesn't take much to be able to tell the difference every time.

I'm not sure about the helicopter itself though, doesnt seem like a photo but I could be wrong, could just have very good filters/and grading applied over it

You've missed a few areas. The clouds/sky is photo, and basically the entirety of the buildings are photos (except the white chimney in the very top right). The ground in the bottom left is a photo with a few random brushstrokes and a splatter brush on top.

>I'm not sure about the helicopter itself though
It's a photo. He painted the faint bounce light and thin white rimlight on the underneath of it. The big camera(?) above the blades looks like it could be painted, but it might have had a photo base and just been mostly covered up.

Well that is surprising, I genuinely couldn't tell. The part above the blades is probably part of the photo too, its a Kiowa Warrior so it is a IR camera or something like that on top.

Damn I really wanna try my hand at photobashing now. And I can see now why he has so many thousands of specific references on his computer in his design cinema videos too.

>> No.2866860

If you want to try photobashing I recall that Maciej Kuciara did a long demo showing how to do it, of like some oil rigs in an ocean, and you can find it on youtube. His end result on the demo wasn't that great in my opinion, but he knows his stuff and his client work is mostly very strong.

By the way, notice how uniform these images are in terms of colour. They're basically monochromatic, and that's because it's much easier to get the photos to look like they are a part of the same scene this way.

There's also various tricks you can do to "hide" the method, like choosing base photos that have the same resolution, or putting a subtle film grain filter over things to unify the painted parts better.

If you're curious to see really high level stuff, try looking at some Brad Rigney pieces from the last few years. He's a guy who painted photoreal from his imagination for a long time but has since switched to using photobashing and painting together, and it can be tricky to tell what is what. His images though are definitely time consuming and are illustration, not concept art.
