post here please

Post your current drawing here and provide helpful criticism and advice to others!

This is not a thread to discuss your autism, the rest of the board is for that.

Please make sure your posted image is clear, DOWNSIZED TO AROUND 1000 PIXELS WIDE, ROTATED TO THE CORRECT ORIENTATION, and that any unused space is cropped.
If you want critique on a drawing from the previous thread, you can delete it there and repost in this one and then kill yourself.

Don't worry too much about what some random anons say. The image would work well as a book cover precisely because it puts questions into your mind. What is this place she is in? Why is the statue broken? How can she balance the sword like that? Makes you want to find out. This will be a good piece if you finish it.

As for making it less dull... more contrast and color. It's very brown and mid tone right now. Can be done by heightening the lighting. You've got warm light in the background on that statue, cool skylight spotlight on the character, can play up both of those and have them highlighting bits of the character. Michael Komarck and Brad Rigney play this sort of thing up a lot. Helps show the forms and also adds contrast. They also keep their backgrounds values really compressed and light compared to foreground figure to make figure pop out.

How to speed up rendering guys?

Finally jumped into digital and got a tablet. Been going through ctrl-paint but is there a better way to do/learn rendering than push/pulling value blocks ? Just the torso took me hours to do.

Also, how do you guys study value? Is it just grinding greyscale still lives/objects until you 'just get it' by osmosis? I feel like its really easy to fall into turd-polishing mode and not actually learn like you do when practicing gesture poses, anatomy or perspective and KNOW how it should be.

I too enjoyed the feline's presence in the illustration. His dark coat with an otherworldly sheen a stark contrast to the dirty snow, his uneven eyes as if saying "are you serious?" when in fact it is the viewer who feels inclined to pose that question to the cat, for what is he doing huddling in a clump in the middle of nowhere?

Yeah I see what you mean. A mate wanted an illustration of two men around a fire in a canyon while the smoke of the fire became a sail ship. Ten points if you recognize the book.
Now that I remember the fire once I add that in the left side is going to be so busy compered to the right.
I should put them on that plane of rock on the right. Would give the work a better scale and more space for the men.

the mountains in the distance, shiny spear, ship, cliff to the right, two guys and the rock structure to the left.
In my paint-over I tried to make these elements work together, I first lightened up the sky and distant mountains to separate them from midground. I then made the right cliff bigger and gave it a lighter value to separate it from the foreground I also changed the left rock structure because the blue in the corner was distracting. As for the ship, i positioned it in an open space since it looked cramped in that corner. I changed the direction of the spear because pointing directly at the image border will lead the eye out of the image, this also goes for all of those pointy mountains in the distance, they are all pointing in every direction which makes them extremely distacting. Also, I didn't notice the fire before you mentioned it so I made it bigger and kneeling down guy is now sitting on a rock.

It's the knowledge I gained from perspective made easy and the knowledge I gained from how to draw by Scott Robertson.

Perspective made easy is the primary book though.

I didn't really have a major breakthrough until I started drawing from 3D models on my computer. It's the only replacement to drawing from life. It's the only place you can see how perspective works. Pictures aren't worth a fuck.

Be sure to break everything down into a basic box. Apply perspective (from ear to ear it is a line in perspective, and it's also parallel with the front plane on the box), and be sure to learn how boxes move in perspective. Try tilting them forward and drawing them falling off of a cliff.

I'd say before you get help from 3D software, understanding the ins and outs of perspective is paramount. Know what happens to the vanishing points when a box is tilted in a certain manner. Keep in mind that the roof from perspective made easy is actually a very important example for how to tilt a box in perspective.

Not sure how you did it, but it feels like the feet have gender tied to them. Some kind of insane illusion or my subconscious just messing with me. It might be because of the gesture? Tipping feet to reach up to the tall guy to smooch a kiss. What refs did you use for your colors?

pretty shit values/separation between light and dark/no edge control as evidenced by the way you drew the highlights on the toes, the legs don't have any separation bewteen them so they could be like stuck togehter. if that thing in the right hand is your signature, don't write your signature on a study, extend the legs beyond the canvas so it's not just floating legs, fix the color TEMPERATURE - its like u only drew one value for skin when skin actually has multiple colors on it ie. the shadow could be redder and the lights could be bluer ETC oh yea look up subsurface scattering for how light enters the skin and comes out, and finally the shadow on the ground doesn't really feel right, probably because of how soft it's drawn. overall i don't think its terrible but it's lacking subtlety and thought into how a skin works. btw i think the idea is decent, kissing as shown by tip toes, even if it is a bit generic. and i forgot to mention by the way you drew the feet/colors they could be clones b/c of the exact same color and nobodys skin is the same color??

ok bud learn perspective. please. it will really help you. don't try to tip toe around it, you're only hurting yourself if you're trying to get ahead in drawing, also i can tell you photobashed parts, which is fine but it's not going to help you unless you can paint decently without it. which looking at your brushstrokes you need help. anyway here's what i see. 1. you don't know how to control your shapes, stop trying to polish turds : make sure you know WHERE your rock masses will be and what shadows will be on them, edges are really important in landscape painting.
2. fix your scale, honestly why is the river the same size or even bigger as your landscape goes back, idk what these giant rocks are doing randomly placed in your picture because when people put objects in organic landscapes it's to help with depth.
3, it's just way too messy, you don't know how to control values and learn about how atmospheric perspective works : it's not just lighter in the background/more blue, it's more desaturated in the background. ps. your horizon line looks weird
4. not sure what else other than don't keep trying to polish this, go look up how other people paint landscapes and look at their values/brush control, i appreciate your effort/this is a good start but you need to approach it more methodically rather than so messily

thx for the crit, ill fix that river, i do have a tiny photo of 2 buildings in the back but im planning to take that out, was just comparing values. ya usually i keep a very solid clean approach but, branching off into landscapes, i tend to mess around trying to fix stuff, it gets so messy later on....horizon line is messed up. i was having a lot of trouble with the scale and perspective, need to clarify more where it is. ill check out how others are approaching it...any good suggestions who to check out? fzd is the only one i know besides edlin i think his name is. appreciate the crit again.

Why is traditional painting so harrrd. (Specifically paint mixing.) Working with solid watercolor (half pans) and ph Martian Liquid watercolor.

Things either end up too diluted or too muddy. (I am using SHIT paper.... but considering I was using heavy printer paper it is still a step up. ) Next time I am going to use my medium tier paper.

What else can I do. What are some good resources on color mixing. (Also I am partially colorblind...... :/)

color & light by james gurney will be able to explain anything better than I can, but I will recommend that you start mixing your complimentary colors (if you don't know what complimentary colors are yet, that's a good place to start). If you need to add shadows to your green values, try using red. Mix your grays and browns by combining compliments. One of the good things about watercolor is your ability to smear and blend hues and values together to create those wonderful inbetween colors - a brown log isn't just brown, and a green leaf isn't just green. It's a lot of different hues. James Gurney will tell you that painting directly from life will help you understand this, when you're aware of your own light source in your own environment its a lot easier to figure out the root of the hues and values you're seeing.

I'm drawing Poe for a friend's birthday that's coming up in 2 weeks. I normaly have about 3 hours a day I can spend on this and I'm running out of time (making a frame from scrap in same time limit). What the fuck do I do for the background? Was thinking maybe a circular gradiant darker at the edges of the paper and getting lighter towards his head. Tell me what you think, I need someone better than me to tell me my shit.

Doing studies from photos can be hard. Try to find references with hard shadows and one lightsource. It makes it easier to tell the underlying form instead of seemingly random shadow shapes and subtle skintone variations. They can be distracting.

Look at other artists work for composition, try to make one that works by learning from other ones. It is not cheating, just learning and you will be able to do it yourself later on.
Also do a few landscape studies, google maps/street view is great for refs! And then try again, use refs, stuff you learned from other peoples work! You'll improve and get there.

If you don't want to worry about proportions, and solely practice your value, it is beneficial to trace a line drawing. Doing it that way, you know that the only reason your drawing looks off is because of your lack of value knowledge and not because you fucked up the proportions.
