This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun!

Fresh off the Mayflower? Then do yourself a flavor and check out /ic/s complementary subordinate sticky here:

the legs are just fine. What threw me off was your foreshortening, especially the right arm. it looks like a stub rather than foreshortened if you ask me. Also, your derivation of how you got the jawline looks a little like you're unaware of the jaw structure that lies inside of the head.

Get used to seeing peoples' heads at different angles familiarize yourself with the human skeleton as to be able to derive your own positions in your own head. grabbing a reference is still key, but it'll definitely help with a speedy line art. i'm gonna red mark suggestions and errors

Yeah, my take on the situation is that the neck line is falling to short and giving the impression that her neck is twisting, so if you brought it out a little farther that may help. As well, I feel that her left shoulder may be to large in proportion to her right. This is just what I think may be the issue, but other anons may see things that I have missed. I love the pastel aesthetic although!

>> No.2837977

Anatomy can take a year to learn anon. Anatomy isn't part of the fundamentals, no matter what the faggots here tell you. Learning to draw with shapes instead of lines and knowing how to turn those shapes into 3D ones in perspective with the right gesture is. You only really need anatomy if you want to become a professional. It is, however, a valuable skill and can make a much better artist if you get it down

>> No.2837992

Basically, you should learn in this way:
Gesture>Shapes>Perspective>Form>Light and Shadow>Anatomy>Color>Advanced Rendering.
Of course you can do other things on the list out of order but try to focus and get the previous steps done first. It'll make everything easier and faster to learn

Robot anon says to check out the classic animus like Cowboy Bebop and Seinfeld. Once you experience quality several times, you will immediately have no tolerance for the trash (SAO). The old stuff is usually better because back then you actually had to be talented to even be able to get a budget, Now they're giving it out to a bunch of fuccboi hacks. Also, keep in mind since (almost) nobody remembers the mediocre media only the best of the best will rise to the cream of the crop. I call this the History Garbage Strainer. Not sure, I've tried a lot of different brushes and settings.
1 works kinda close but in small quantities and spaces. I ALWAYS work on A4 300dpi and for instance, in big areas like hair it doesn't work very good. "But increase the brush size you fucking idiot", yeah, I do that. It doesn't look that good tho.

2 is similar to 1. Even increasing it for bigger areas works kinda nice too but there's something to it that doesn't make me stay with it.

3 is the default Clip Studio watercolor and I don't really understand how the settings work to customize it to my liking.

Depends on what you're going for.
Looks pretty cartoony but it looks okay to me.

Some small details missing, like the blue scales on his back.
Maybe clean up the edges all round. Especially around his the upper lip.
Maybe angle the front claw on tetsu's right hand (our left) a bit differently.

But over all just keep going in the direction that you're going.

The lantern is the only element that kinda makes sense, everything else has nonsensical lightning.
You're shading the guy as if there was a really strong source of lightning, which there isnt. Considering the strongest source of light is the lamp, there should be a lot more contrast between lights and shadows. Also, there are a lot of places that should be in the shade.

I think the worse part tho is that you killed the strongest part of the drawing: the train lineart. I know it's supposed to be dark, but try to play around with cold colors to give the idea of night time without completely obscuring your shapes, cause the way it is now, you might have been better of just alluding at the outline of the train, instead of doing a complete drawing

Pretty solid overall in terms of getting the general structure down. Looks like you can improve the shape a bit more seeing how you've already made some efforts giving your heads more detail. For instance, the cranium is never spherical. Looks like you kinda implied that in your second head but you should always consider flattening it out in general. The eye region also has some deviance from the head, which again you kinda attempted in 2 and 4. The eye socket+brow region tends to be more nuanced for a lot of styles, and it's rare to see even the most stylized works to ignore it.

I don't have a working mouse so have a shitty redline.

The parlor trick to how kjg draws is in the fountain pen. If he makes a mistake, he can easily cover it up by incorporating it into a shadow of an another figure. The fountain pen I used was a lot thicker and was more attuned to caligrapphy then what he usually uses, with the brush size he uses only being only half that size. His own stokes are a lot more swifter since he doesn't have to worry about retracing his lines to makeing the edges more broader and apperent due to the amount of ink that pours in a line in a single pen stroke.

He's talented nonetheless, but anyone can learn how to draw cars, guns, Marines and people with a few months of training. Add in a bit of perspective, Anatomy and architectural study and with consistent 16 hour studies, anyone can out top him in 3-4 months time.

Tldr: kjg is a 41 year old hack

Anon is right though. It would only take a few months of training to be able to learn how to draw cars, guns, Marines and people. It only takes me a day to learn how to draw them and then I can do it from memory already. Do it for a few months and you should be able to get down even complex things if you consistently go back and fix your memory. I think KJG even talks about this. He says it doesn't have to be exactly right, just look right and he does this by correcting the memory of the object until it is.

I think you're drawing her front view.
Try to draw the perspective of the bed/ground/surface first just for reference.
The ribs cage in this pose on the left overlaps the pelvic area. You should also emphasize the roundness of the ribs if you're camera is above pointing down.
The facial features would also be lower. Luckily your reference has an example slightly leaning down.

I've been working on drawing anime shit for a while now, but I'm not sure how to get good line quality in my final inking. I'm also not sure how to achieve a decent watercolor look for coloring (I really like the light color wash + ink hatching look).

Anyone have tips or tutorials for getting quality inking and digital watercolor? Or how to get a nice paper texture for my images? Pic related for kind of the style I want to achieve.

2. Hatch as needed
3. Color the lineart brown
4. Use pastel colors and fill in the spaces
5. Copypaste a watercolor texture

The cranium is bigger than it should be, or at least her hair implies that. lt makes the rest of the face look too small in comparison. Stop doing that "eyes and eyebrows on top of the hair" shit because it looks dumb and doesn't make sense. The side of the face is too angular, so l changed the shape of the face to make it into a less extreme angle. The ear is too small and too pointy. l tried to add more value to the hair because it was looking pretty flat, but l can't tell where the light source is supposed to be. The values you use for shadows are so close to the midtone you might as well just make everything flat colors. The neck looks like its just a cylinder, as well, so l tried to fix that. The flow of the ponytail felt unnaturally straight so l changed the flow. l also connected the lines of the mouth and made the visible eye wider, but maybe thats more a matter of personal taste. Her glasses look like they're falling off her face, but l wasn't too sure how to fix that. As for her body, her shoulders seem too small in comparison to her torso, and the right breast is smaller than the left one.
l'm not too good at explaining myself verbally because l'm a filthy esl, so hopefully pic related illustrates what l mean well enough.

Can you tell me how long "after a long time" is? Because I got a tough semester ahead of me, and I'm thinking that I need to drop drawing for a little while, maybe a couple months till the semester is done. You seem to still be able to draw, and I just want to get a rough estimate of how long I can go without get too rusty to ever come back to it.

>> No.2842067

Not that anon, but I quit (heh) drawing for the last 3 or 4 months. Still struggling to get to the level I was at (but that was largely inflated since I was rigorously drawing for three months), but I've still retained a lot of knowledge and memory.

You can still study art without drawing during breaks. Just make a lot of observations and mental notes when you inspect things in real life or how an artist draws something. It won't level you up or anything, but it'll help reduce regression.

In my case I quit drawing really long periods (years) but I keep the tecnical skill, the thing that get rusty is the imagination.

I actually genuinely really like this The eyes and the boobies! really give off a good seductive charm. heck maybe I should just stop drawing for like a year and come back to it too, as I have Calc, Adv. Functons, bio chem, grade 12 all in one semester.. I do sometimes feel that when I'm having a real shitty art block, stepping away for like 3 days really helps, and sometimes after those days of "no art" I even feel that I got better even without drawing anything. It's really weird. Tunneling on something and getting through and through with it just doesn't seem to work anymore, maybe it's just the hand to eye improvement thingy idk. Or maybe it's just the feeling or mood I'm experiencing.. Because I've come to realize that that has a lot to play when I create art nowadays .oh and btw do you have a blog?

I'm sorry in advance for posting SU here

I've been struggling a lot recently with a couple of things.
First, I don't feel my works look "finished" yet, I don't know how to explain it.
Compare to this: http://imgur.com/CTgLJC9
Somehow that looks "finished".

The other thing is my shading. Besides still not having full understanding of my light sources, I feel my problem is partly to the brush too.
I'm using the following: http://imgur.com/gYlYrJg
Usually for shading I use analogue colors as explained here for shading http://imgur.com/f2Edbeu but sometimes I just end up using black to shade darker parts.

I don't want to achieve Da Vinci levels of drawing, I just want to be up there with videogame artists like Hideki Ichikawa, Kinu Nishimura, Ken Sugimori or Alex Ahax but I don't know what I lack yet (besides years of experience)

So I'm stuck endlessly drawing generic girls in case I get lucky.

This is also not my primary focus when it comes to art so I don't have much time to work on interesting pieces.
