People are harping on the wrong thing, the art quality.

So he's not as good at imagination work as other things. So what? No one is born knowing how to draw well. If he's just starting out at it, then he's not going to be good at it.

The real problem is that his live stream was supposed to be teaching. He's not at that the level where he should be teaching others.

If the video was something like "I'm just learning to draw from imagination", then fine, sure, go ahead, nothing wrong with that.

When the video is about "let me teach you to draw from imagination", well then it becomes a problem.

Not because the art is bad, but because he is being so delusional/arrogant to suggest that he has learned it well enough to be able to give advice on it.

Yeah sure, but it IS weird seeing as he has been teaching to sketch with forms for YEARS. He put up the Loomis head video like, 2012? The thing people are reacting to is that even though he might not have studied animal anatomy to any extent, he should at the very least have been able to sketch out some solid forms. In his other videos (i.e. the robo bean etc.) you get the impression that he has rather solid sketching skills. Sketching out a somewhat dog shaped 3d figure in the equivalent to a Loomis head SHOULD be within his ability.

He's probably alright at drawing figures from imagination even without refs. He just for some reason decided to draw cartoon characters and a fucking kangaroo from imagination during that livestream. Animals are notoriously difficult to get right, even common ones like dogs, cats or horses look often times really wonky when artists don't use reference for them.

Yeah but it's a cartoon dog. You don't have to get the anatomy 100% accurate. Just create some solid forms (sphere head, sphee jaw, pear body), and give it a nice line of action for a dynamic pose.

Does pic related look like a real dog? No. Does it look like a solid cartoon? Yes.

Seems common for guys who focus on trying to get good at figure drawing. You can end up dedicating your life to it. Everyone out of Watts seems kinda similar. Yeah Jeff Watts paints, but outside of his quick sketches he kinda sucks. EM Gist is kinda dated and awkward looking in his illustrations but his figure drawings are amazing. Same for Proko.

If figure drawing is all you want to do then that is cool. Guys like Steve Huston and John Asaro seem to have been more successful at that. But I dunno how many times I've heard "if you can draw the human figure then you can do anything". Turns out that's not so true.

Setting the horizon line is the most basic step and he couldn't even do that. It's like a giant chunk of knowledge went missing, a chunk that most people saw applied to his previous works so it's baffling how he didn't know how to construct in perspective.

Thanks to this and his video making a comic about dogs I realized that life drawing is useless and won't get me anywhere. I could spend 7 years at Watts Atelier and for what? to draw shit? Art is a meme. I wasted my whole life for this.

Art school is a meme. I went a few years to an atelier, not Watts though. There was a few guys there that were Gud (including some digital painters you might recognize by name) but here's the thing

The atelier didn't make them gud. They made themselves gud. All of the ones who were gud were drawing all the time in their sketchbooks when they weren't working on a cast drawing or in the model room. They were constantly doing studies at home aswell and had done so for _years_ before getting into the atelier. The atelier gave them a boost in rendering and ability in making pretty life drawings and oil paintings, but that's pretty much it. I saw another guy though who had no previous experience drawing whatsoever who after a year could do really beautiful, professional level life drawings. Nothing from imagination though.

So my takeaway is this: self taught is the true master race for drawing from imagination. All those guys you see who have extensive sketchbook threads on concept art or permanoobs etc. where they make clear improvements and post a ton of work? They are the guys to watch out for.
