Pic related says that in environments with one light source the shadow would always be darkest at the origin. Yet when I've tried to confirm this in experience I'm not so sure I see this (the distinction between midtone and highlight in real life makes it quite a bit harder). For example when you take a cube, each different face has a distinct value, instead of just having the lightest and darkest as the image would suggest (I know it's not the most academic source, but the dude is clearly better than me at light and colouring)

What material can I read or see to clarify this?

Also a couple other questions I've been unanswered:

>What conditions besides atmospheric perspective change color saturation?
>What other exercises can you do to practice composition besides thumbnails?

that picture is such horseshit its hard to fully break it down.
First off, the origin of the shadow is not its core. The core is where the line of light is tangent to the curved surface. As the surface is likely curving away from the light source before the tangent is met, the surface will get darker before the core shows up. So right off the bat this picture is wrong. But, you're mentioning using cubes but the idea of a core shadow isn't for flat surfaces (maybe theres a situation where it is, not one I can think of), its for curves. Just hold your hand up to a light, you should be able to see a core pretty easily (keep in mind it'll be more saturated than just dark, due to subsurface scattering).

Man that picture sucks though, seriously don't try to learn fundamentals from people who are like, slightly better than you, learn them from people who are objectively professionals. Try Color and Light by Gurney

>> No.2814157

Still Color and Light has received massive amounts of shit from /ic/ so I'm not quite sure.

Still I guess that the tangent to the curved surface is what he means by "the origin", using Pikachu's head as a spehere.

My issue with the cube example is that a circle is just a regular infinite-sided polygon. and so by translating that into the sphere, the same light difference between planes should constitute a gradient from shadow to light, if I understand correctly.

Still I'm quite lost, is there an alternative to Color and Light? Or will it just serve me anyways.

Thanks for your answer anyways

I'm not exactly sure what exactly i'm doing wrong here.

so you have two vanishing points for the box on top of the "table", one for the table itself converging at the horizon line, and the last vanishing point for the table edges is going off the page.

I feel like the drawing isn't technically inaccurate, but i'm not fully understanding perspective "theory" in the way that vanishing points are "supposed" to work.

>> No.2814768

>>2814754
Not every single edge leads to a vanishing point lol. Otherwise everything would have to be oriented as your green object.

Like imagine a larger square oriented to fit the same vanishing points as the green object, then cut out the corners to create a square oriented like your table.

Or just connect the corners to the vanishing points and that will give you the thickness in perspective.

>> No.2814780

>>2814768

Ohhhh, so basically the perspective is essentially oriented to the "ground plane", so like if you were drawing a room in two point perspective, not every object in the room would have to be facing the exact same direction?

>> No.2814789

>>2814157
I don't know who's talking shit about color and light. It will serve you fine. I don't know why you're iffy about buying a universally acclaimed guide book but are okay with following a terrible 100% inaccurate deviantart tutorial.

I guess a cube is a sphere with two sides, but in that case, no, the same phenomenon that happens with a circle would not happen with a cube. If every plane is its own value, then how are you supposed to have more than two values when holding two sides of a cube up to a light? A core appears because an initial light source and its reflections share a similar tangent, its certainly not a universal constant and it wouldn't appear on a cube unless it was under special circumstances. Just get the color and light book dude, don't follow lighting tutorials from 16 year olds.

>> No.2814800

>>2814780
The perspective is oriented to the ground plane in relation to objects sharing parallel lines with the ground plane. If you take your green box and turn it, the sides will go to new vanishing points, and any other object in the room orientated in a way that it shares parallel sides with the green box will head toward those same vanishing points. And if you turn it again, there will be new vanishing points as well. The only constant between a multitude of differently orientated objects in a room is that all their vanishing points will lay on the pictures eye level.

Also for the red square there, when two sides are perpendicular to your line of sight, they're essentially in a one point perspective situation, so 'vanishing point 4' isn't really something you need to worry about.

Also, don't quote me on this, I could be wrong, but if distortion increased and increased on that red object, then eventually those horizontal lines would be essentially sucked into the sphere of your eyes perspective interpretation. Hard to explain, basically I think that once that red square exits your cone of vision, those straight lines begin to curve in your peripheral.
I'm kind of rambling at this point, but I think its probably important to realize sooner rather than later than apart from your eye level and a vertical straight out ahead of you, no line is strictly straight in perspective. All lines are influenced by the reality of the sphere of our vision. You can often add a bit of life to your cubes by respecting the subtle fish eye of all lines as they curve around the very center of your eye level. I'm still learning stuff myself though, the abstract of the world outside of the typical cone of vision probably isn't important for you right now.

>> No.2816006

I'm trying to learn how to draw the human figure from imagination and I'm sort of stuck on construction. In many artbooks on the subject I see boxes being primarly used for a construction of the figure, which I can also do somewhat, but after constructing the figure this way, I often cannot work the construction out to a solid drawing. I often end up with something that is flat, missing a lot of details and just doesn't feel right. Is this because using boxes for the construction of the figure is to simplified for me to work out to a good figure drawing or is it because I'm not good enough in working the construction out to a finished drawing, what step am I doing wrong? Construction is used to 'rotate' the subject in space. If you want to be able to draw a figure from that, you'll need to be able to "carve" the box into a more detailed objects but that requires knowledge of anatomy.

It helps to draw the subject e.g. the ribcage from the front, side, and back then simplify that into a box which you "carve" into a more detailed form. If you can do that in 2D, it can be done in 3D using the 2D drawings as a guide.

This is good of doing studies.

There's your problem dude, you're just randomly sketching like your in a highschool classroom, not really paying attention to WHAT exactly you're drawing.

Start reading the classics, look at how people tell STORIES.
Read Aesop's Fables, look at the nationalistic painters of the Napoleonic Empire trying to convey the soul lifting ideal of conquest to persuade their viewers to support the cause, read Orwell's 1984 and put yourself in the author's position as to why he is writing what he is, look at the epitome of what you can become as a human i.e "The Renaissance Man."

So let's review our inspiration here:
1. The Classics (Oscar Wilde, Tolstoy, Shakespeare, etc.)
2. History (The rise of empires, revolutions, etc.)
3. Philosophy (Nietzsche's ideal of the ultimate goal of man [ubermensch].

There is plenty out there for inspiration, keep going, you're just in a slump.

This sounds like a composition question.

>>2815954

No. Tracing direct poses is bad, but gesture is primarily communicating the body language of the person. It doesn't matter if the person is young, old, male or female, short or tall, slim or fat, et cetera. Never draw these details in the gesture.

Use this to practice economy of lines you use to obtain the gesture. Aim to have as few lines as possible, avoid chicken scratch. Use clean linrd and make them flow. If you're drawing on paper (and I hope you are), use your elbow and your arm as to express these lines as often as you can.

It's okay to break realism here if it means having a stronger gestural drawing. You can often find a single curved line that goes from one of the shoulders, down the rib cage and into the opposite leg. Look for larger shapes - you don't need to indicate both sides of the arm if one side is dominant enough to convey the gesture.

>>2816006
>>2816024

If you're not doing life drawing classes (longer poses, 1+ hour each), you really should.

And in these classes you should challenge yourself to draw both what you see directly in front of you, as well as draw the construction of the figure. The latter is absolutely needed if you want to achieve good rendering. Put two of these together and you'll build up a vocabulary of lights, shadows and forms on the human body.

Proportions is quite simple.

It's just the measurements of the body and how they measure relative to each other.

All in all, it makes more sense if you actually draw because anyone who doesn't know probably doesn't draw much then.

I'll even give you an example, someone draws a face, but the eyes are too big. That means the proportions are off. Same thing with the body. The arms are too big or the legs are too long. Proportions are off then. Loomis created this general guideline for you that applies to most figures so you can adapt and change it to how you see fit. It's revolutionary really, but you won't be able to fully make use of it until you draw a lot and fill up your visual library.

okay so Gondola A is our main subject. let's say he's 6 feet tall. if you want to move him futher back you pick a point and draw the lines going all the way to your first vanishing point. which is where we get gondola B.
just like boxes he'll strink. but still maintain the same proportions.

Now for Gondola C we create a new reference vanish point from gondola B through to where you want C to stand and to your new vanishing point.

i dont know if this is what you're asking but it might help somebody,

Recently got a wacom tablet for free from a relative. As a beginner, would starting out drawing digital be detrimental in any way as opposed to paper?

>> No.2820014

>>2820013
No, in fact, you pick up drawing even faster with digital because of all the shortcuts. It removes the annoyances you would deal with on physical media. You can undo mistakes easily and focus on the whole instead of the tidbits. Digital painting is super flexible and allows you to learn quickly too since there's a color picker so you don't have to strain your eyes, but be able to actually pick out what's really there. Although, I would argue perspective is a bit difficult to learn with digital, but it's not impossible. It's just a tad difficult without a ruler.

>> No.2820036

Yes it would be detrimental.
Not saying you shouldnt use it at all, just have a bit of fun with it and mess around but keep your fundamental studies on paper. The fact that you cant "undo" your mistakes so easily will beat them in your head sooner so you dont repeat them. Also with trad you can draw anywhere, anytime. With a tablet you have to be at your pc.
I suggest you get a nice big block of paper (here i can get like 150 A3 papers for 20$) and a nice set of pencils (F to 8B). Also I must insist on bigger paper size because if you draw small you will not be able to draw in all the details meaning you effectively "avoided" drawing and therefore learning. Good luck

Online courses are supplements to hands on instruction. You'll want good, competent teachers in addition to self-teaching. So if you can afford it and you have an atelier in your proximity (Watts, Aristides, etc), I'd go to that one without thinking twice.

This is how it would look like if your height line was on your eye level. On a drawing like that, which clearly defines that outside of a building, you don't need to put the height line on the eye level line or higher, unless you want to draw giants. Don't worry if you don't understand it yet. You will learn more how to use the height line once you reach page 99.
Also one important tip when studying this part of the book is don't forget about the "base line".

If you care you can try to reverse google image search it.

If the ref you used is recognizable from your painting, you can mention a ref was used. If not, then there's no real need to mention.

To different people, using a ref could mean slavishly copied or briefly gleaned. Different people even care whether refs were used or not. Personally I'd only bother mentioning it if the painting heavily relied on the ref.

I draw and paint throughout highschool. I did pretty well but yeah I know its highschool it doesn't really mean anything, and I did well in maths & physics too so I decided a bach-science was alright for me. I took a gap half year (since I'm an international student going to an australian university and aussie uni's have inverse semester timings). I did a part time job and all that to do something with my free time, but that can't really keep me occupied for 6 months. I discovered /ic/ and that rekindled my hobby to do art, and since I had so much free time, the hobby basically became self-teaching (I bought anatomy books, listened to the whole levelup!, practiced at least 4 hours a day, etc). Maybe I spent a bit too long on /ic/ and started thinking learning alone ain't so bad; which probably why I am being so questioning why bother taking electives on something I can eventually do myself (In Hindsight, that's a really cocky way of thinking). But on the other hand more /arting/ can't go wrong. Typing it all out, the answer becomes kind of obvious. T-thanks for being better than my high school counselor, /ic/

Alright /ic/ I have a question about what path to take to get better.
I'm pretty sure you've heard it before but basically I've been into art since I could hold a pencil and spent most of my life just sketching, or creating pieces for school assignments.

The only formal art instruction I've had is through programs in middle and high school, but I always slacked off and now I feel like getting back into art more seriously.

I'd like to get better at drawing figures and environments, but where do I start if I want to improve?
gestures?
anatomy?
observational drawing?

>> No.2825170

>>2825161
Yes, you should learn how to draw figures and environments if you want to get better at them. Yes, you have to learn all of those, because they're just a package kind of thing, you can't ignore one. Aside from that, what kind of figures and environments are we talking here? Are we talking like character designs and environmental paintings that tell a story? That's a little different.

>> No.2825183

>>2825170

>are we talking like character designs and environmental paintings that tell a story?
yeah, this is my priority but I don't mind learning other stuff too.

Sorry I didn't state my question properly.

I know that I'll need to learn gesture, anatomy, observational drawing, proportions, etc.
What I'm asking is if there's a particular order I need to learn them in.
Can I learn gesture before anatomy? Or does one come before the other? and is there an optimal prioritization to learn them with.

This isn't really the place to ask but since I don't want to start a thread about it, can someone here record Yoshikazu Hamada's streams?

I've been doing it a bit through 2016 and sharing it but unfortunately there's been a military draft so I can't do it anymore since I'm barely home.
I've missed so many pages and covers, it pisses me off
All you need:
>OBS
>enough memory (external hard-drives are obscenely cheap nowadays)
>a PC you can keep on for a long time
>Internet
use Window Capture on Yoshi's stream (LiveFC2 is way better than his Youtube) and just keep the window open till it's over. If you want to do other stuff have it open alone on a window and put the player size to "Fit Browser" instead of "Fullscreen".

I plan on writing a script that automatically checks his RSS feed and records his stream while it's on, and getting an NAS to store/share them eventually but that'll have to wait because of the fucking draft.
So in that time, can someone take over for me?

In a sense, it already has if you aren't a beginner anymore. You understand what to do to get better and will constantly see more ways to get better. A beginner struggles because they are lost and unsure of how to improve, so they do whatever they want until they are at a high enough level to understand what the next steps are. As long as you know what to work on, improving is already streamlined pretty well. Although, you say you're worried about stagnating like you haven't stagnated yet. That's kind of impressive. I will say that you will stagnate, it's inevitable, but whether or not you find a way around that wall is what really matters. No. It is not, but definitely don't let the wood scrape the paper if you're using pencils. It'll scratch the paper and leave terrible looking marks. Do try out different hand positions though. first time drawer; i have 2 questions:

1-i'd like to go digital but i only have a mouse. is there any good technique and software to end up with decent stuff or should i just stick to pencil?

2-i decided to give drawing another chance because of this YT video i randomly saw on my suggestion feeds : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0ufz75UvHs

this guy advocates that people with no natural artistic intuition, like me, are better off learning placement shapes and proportion by drawing the same thing 100 times experimenting with little changes until they find what feels right to them.
is that a sound concept?

it sounds cool for me because last time i followed some tutorials i was left with a strong " now draw the rest of the motherfucking owl by yourself" feeling after setting up the circles.

I'm an absolute beginner and I've always wanted to draw stupid anime shit for games or my own self-satisfaction, but I just can't keep up with the books and end up giving up every time I try to learn the fundamentals. Don't worry, I know they're important and that stylization is something I'll learn much later.

Anyway, I tried doing Keys to Drawing a year ago and looking back on my failure I realized that my problem is that I simply don't know "how to study". Like, alright, I'm done with an exercise, now what? Do I continue with the next one or repeat it until I drop? I got halfway through it but I really had no idea what I was doing.

Sorry for the autism, but I'd like someone to push me in the right direction and teach me how to study, practice, and grind correctly so I can finally become a decent artist at least ;_;

- Make some stupid animu uguu bitches or some videogame "concept-art" or fanart or whatever.
- Finish it, look at it, find what could be improved, find what you think is a weakness, post on /ic/ for critique.
- on the feedback and your feeling, see what excercises to do and what areas you need to improve
- rinse and repeat

Key is continual refinement of some actual product, just doing excercises will make your hand steadier or you'll get better with the medium, but if you're applying them, you'll get better a lot faster.

The best watercolor starter colors are black, Quanicridone Red/Alizarin Crimson, cadmium yellow, viridian green, cobalt blue, and ultramarine blue. Primary colors should be most chromatic because when mixed, they turn neutral. By choosing the brightest, you get more range of colors.

The reason for two blue colors is that cobalt blue is naturally lighter and ultramarine blue is naturally darker and deeper. You will see the difference in colors the more you use them.

Alizarin crimson is a cooler red, while quinacridone red is more of what you call red. They are both red colors, but you only need one.

Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna are redundant brown colors easily mixed by other colors.

White is not necessary, you make colors paler by using more water to let more of the white paper show through.

Vermillion hue is a warm red, and crimson lake is a cool red that can be mixed using red paint, yellow paint, or blue paint. You just need one red color.

You can get yellow ochre by mixing permanent yellow with something brown.

Viridian and permanent green are redundant. Viridian is a cool green, but you can make it a very bright green by adding some yellow. Or you can just use permanent green.

I have no experience with prussian blue. Looking at the color online, which appears very dull a muted, I don't think it is as versatile as ultramarine blue.

Brownish/neutral colors can be mixed by toning down some of the primary colors. As a beginner, don't buy these colors. The exception is for experienced painters who find themselves mixing the same paint over and over again.

Buy additional colors when you need them. For example, when I tried to paint bright pool water, cobalt blue and ultramarine wasn't intense enough, so I bought helio cerulean paint that matched the color of the pool. Cases like this are rare and the paint I mentioned should cover most ranges.

soo does this stand for only critiqued sessions or am i not able to lets say grind the whole course in a week?

btw i cant tell if you are being ironic or am i being misleading - it was uploaded somewhere for free, i'm willing to pay for art stuff and i do from time to time, but my resources are limited so i'd rather spend that money on books for now..

What /ic/ does not understand, because you're idiots ( I understand that), is that schoolism isn't so much about the actual lecture, but the critiques. Schoolism classes are critique classes and you learn far more information in the critiques than the actual lectures because you see many examples in various styles from your classmates. That is why pirating is such a waste of time when you have the entire critique library for only $15---a God damn steal if you ask me.

I want to do streams, but I have a problem. When I stream for 10 minutes, my program starts to be laggy. Don't matter if it's sai or photoshop. I don't lose frames on stream. Could it be the problem of my HDD disk? I have 8 gb RAM, Radeon 4600 series 1GB, intel core2 Quad Q9550 2.83Ghz

You need 16gm ram and an i5 and a better card than that if you want to do any kind of video editing/streaming. In other words your system is shit.

If it's more comfortable to you to stand when you're painting or drawing, then do this. I don't think I can really help you because my spine is distorted in many ways, kek.

How od I open a photo in PS while having some space near it to copy it? I used manga studio and it was quite easy to do it, in PS if I "open" a photo it will open it in a new page and there won't be any space to draw near it.

So we know that colors have separate moods. However, I'm wondering what different values/saturations of those colors mean. Why is it that a regular green is related to nature but another type of green would give a creepy vibe when paired with a dark color. Why is does a pale blue give a different color than a dark blue.

How do I make a faded color of something? Like when you are painting something in the distance.
