With all the other shit you have to submit in a portfolio for this program, they want to see your online presence as well. There are two reasons for this.
>They want to see how you're presenting/marketing yourself, and how you will reflect on the school. They want people who will graduate and not make anything that will piss off their (((Hollywood masters)))
>They want to see you in a more casual setting to get a fuller picture of your serious vs casual work, and if you draw fan art that couldn't be submitted with your portfolio; they want to see what your interests are and if you can follow market trends.

Calarts is the top school because almost all of the people in the animation industry who are well-known and successful are connected by it. The reason is because it's basically meant to indoctrinate and prepare its students for the industry, which is also why the industry favors Calarts alumni.
You can also point to this as the reason why tumblr style is so popular in the industry now and why all character designs look the same. Lowering the standard so they can admit retarded SJWs who claim "muh style pls no shaming you racist sexist homophobe" because those are spoiled kids they want who will pay their tuition and never challenge the status quo
