Post your current drawing here and provide helpful criticism and advice to others!

This is not a thread to discuss your autism, the rest of the board is for that.

Please make sure your posted image is clear, DOWNSIZED TO AROUND 1000 PIXELS WIDE, ROTATED TO THE CORRECT ORIENTATION, and that any unused space is cropped.
If you want critique on a drawing from the previous thread, you can delete it there and repost in this one and then kill yourself.

changed some stuff, realized bow in left hand + axe in right hand makes no sense
also the legs were too short

the bow is pretty lazy, but it's a concept for a game where I was thinking the weapons would have flat shading so the color reads from a distance

if it's supposed to read well, push up the contrast between bow and background. Looks quite simple, but also think about simplifying light source and pushing it really strong, might help you with flat shading.

Im testing out comic layout and really liking one big image with dialogue. This one is too simplified and sketchy, but I'm liking the idea.

Painting is decent, drawing has some structural issues. The neck and shoulder area look poorly attached. Get rid of the hair temporarily to fix that.

Her left forearm looks flat, mostly because it isn't lit consistently with the rest of the figure. Planes of the abdominals are a bit wonky, mind your values there.

Fish half looks too big and fat compared to the rest of the figure. Think about locomotion and what mass and musculature is actually necessary. It also pinches funny in places that seem more like a slug or a stuffed sock than a fish. Having part of it resting on a ground plane also seems odd to me.

You could probably push the highlights on the hair. The hair also doesn't look like it's behaving correctly for underwater hair - too much of a unified mass. I'm not a fan of having only 2 stray locks of hair that conveniently hide the nipples. You could handle that more subtly, replace the nipples with scales, or just include them without overrendering them.

I don't like the pure white background. It forces a lot of your other values to be darker than they need to be and also caps how bright you can go on the figure. Even making it a tad darker with a hint of color can help make it less straining. You could include some indication of an environment, like a section of the ground plane, to give context and a bit of visual interest. Think about your composition and the options that open up.

I prefer poses that look natural over 'posing for a photo', but whatever suits your needs.

I'm a /beg/ but I fucking love merms and saw this when scrolling through so I thought I would chime in

First off, I love the off skin tone and colors you are using. Your lighting looks great too, and you've captured a good texture for the scales and the skin that really looks and feels nice.

Now for what seems off: having her in a white void is a little sad, I feel like she could be even more lovely in a fitting environment. How she is posed is distracting as well. Your painting is going for "dark and mysterious" with hints of alluring but her pose is more like "come here boy and gimmie some of your fine lovin " I think this could be solved by simply adding a toothy grin to bridge the two feelings, but then we go to the tail. The way her tail is poised, alongside the white background, make her look like a naga in a sense. She looks like she's on land and that's something not so great for a fish woman. Perhaps having it curl in front of her instead of back? or even reworking it from the base, but merms tend to not be so "vertical" for lack of a better term. Again, I am from /beg/ so take what I said with a grain of salt

She is gorgeous, though, and based solely off this I would like to know if you have a blog where I could see more of your work!

Nope I agree with last anon, your color temperatures and relativity are totally off. Those aren't the colors you see irl.

Do you know what color your light source is? If it's windowlight it's probably cool. Your shadows are cool, your midtones are warm. Not good

What is the pink outline on the neck?

Tldr you are silly if you disagree with this crit, you lack severe knowledge in color and light.

A simple way to prove this would be to take a photo of yourself and compare your colors to the photo colors in Photoshop with the eyedropper.

Do hundreds of color studies, read Gurney's light and color, read catbibs blurb on color in his journal....

Too much emphasis on line. Heavy outlines for everything that breaks the illusion of form. Compare your drawing to charcoal drawings of masters.

Focus on capturing large, flat value shapes instead of outlines. Pay attention to what edges need to be hard and which ones soft. Squint your eyes at your subject to reduce the amount of visual noise, and try to capture that. Where marks are unavoidable, make them so that they follow the form you're drawing, or so that they're visually appealing (ideally both). Your marks are haphazard and ugly, when they should be designed.

Can probably push the lighting a bit. I'd look into master paintings with candle or torch light. The fire can be brighter, you can include richer reds and oranges in the lit areas, and try to show a decent falloff in light intensity with distance. I see what you were trying to do, and it is better, but basically things that are super dark with no contast aren't really interesting to the eye and things that have contrast and detail are. So when you make the character so dark, the added blips of light actually make him seem darker in comparison and like a mass of shadow. It definitely looks cool and you've got a neat style, I'd just recommend adding more detail and contrast to the character to make him "pop". Think about values and where you want a viewer's attention, and make the most interesting value changes there.

>,I actualy know a litle about occlusion, but this is comics,so i dont wanna go in that direction
Then you don't know enough about occlusion. You've already attempted to include it in your coloring but you haven't done it correctly. Comic book coloring isn't the same as traditional painting in execution but the principles are still the same. In fact in many ways a comic colorist needs to know them even more thoroughly than a fine art painter because they seek to shortcut the painting process and imply light, shadow, form and rendering (texture) efficiently. To simply these aspects you have to know them well to know what you can leave out or how you can stylize to create the illusion while doing half the work.
As a rule of thumb anon, the first thing you think you don't need is probably the first thing you should study.

It's wrong throughout the entire picture, honestly. The large black area under the helmet in the first panel looks entirely like an occlusion shadow. It's a shadow that's hit its darkest value all the way through. It doesn't match the form of the helmet. If those gogles and helmet are pressing as tightly to his face as the next panel implies, the occlusion shadow should be a much much smaller area, just a line, while the other shadowed area should be a somewhat lighter cast shadow with a little fall off. It looks like they're in diffuse lighting so the edges would likely be softer and shadows either need to be not that deep or more areas need to be in shadow to imply there isn't much light in the area. The problems with occlusion are tied to issues with rendering everywhere else in the picture, of not knowing where shadows should start and end, where their ends either need occlusion or sub-surf scattering and need to be hard or soft, and what value they should be. (cont)

>> No.2826282

>>2826274
You're also shading with black which yes can be done right, but in your image it's dulling the colors in a way that just looks unappealing, even if you do want to go for a dingy or washed out look. If you study lighting and color theory a little more you might come across a solution that will let you get the dingy look you want while still looking nice and it could be as simple as shading with a layer of dark blue or purple instead of black. If you study this at all I recommend heading to ctrl.paint. There's a really nice quick video there that gives an overview of the different shadow types and what occlusion shadows are for and when/where to use them.

Hello Anon!

First and foremost- Check your perspective! Draw your horizon line and then start looking at things on your character and ask yourself "Would I see the top of bottom of this cuff?" "Would I see the top or the bottom of this object?" "are your feet suppose to overlap like that?"

Second- The pose is boring and it doesn't tell a ton about the character. Try to pick a pose that's more dynamic and interesting! Take a picture of yourself in a pose or get a friend to do it and use it as ref. You can also get some really cool angles that help support the story of your character. Maybe an Up shot so they look like they're looming over you if they're a villainous character.

Third: Materials
Check to see that all your materials look like what you want them to be. Does the leather look like leather, cloth like cloth? Skin like skin?

Fourth: Anatomy
I think your character could use a little more definition in her anatomy. More primitive people tend to be a little more toned because their everyday life tends to call for it... Or maybe they're a shaman that the village takes care of and they get a little chunky. Or something else... Whatever your reason, make sure it's thought out.

Fifth: Reference
Always use reference. Norman rockwell used extensive reference for his paintings. you think you're better then Rockwell?

There's more that we can go into but I think this is a good start for you! Good luck Anon!

It's a /soc/ meme. Everytime a girl from the UK posted in a thread or anything he'd be there asking if she was in London.

One day while posting his face a girl told him that he was handsome and he went crazy asking her if she was in London using that type of text.

I saw the lines you had going there and thought you intended those to be towards a vanishing point in the sky.
Which you for the record should have in that POV. If the camera looks up, the vanishing point is in the sky. If the camera looks down you'll have one in the ground. You can have both if you feel like it, but then you'll get a more fish eye effect and that's not always a effect everyone wants.

What's with the hyper defensiveness of legitimate critiques lately? This redline fixes a lot of issues the original had, such as her not having proper space from the sternum along the clavicle to her shoulders on both sides. And no, it doesn't look like her shoulders are raised it looks like they're coming out of her neck. The redline fixes that. In attempting to make her look slightly hunched or bending the artist made her breastplate area concave too while the redline corrects the structure of the ribcage while keeping the gesture.
Again I understand healthy skepticism especially given /ic/s rep but let's all be careful not to rob ourselves of the few helpful anons around here.

completely ripped apart the style the original had to "fix" anatomy issues. sure you put some things in the right place, but at what cost? is the original artist gonna learn anything from it? dont work around the style, you both get nothing done. work in their terms not yours. no one draws the same but the whole point is to learn and adapt, and your "fix" just doesnt do anything.

I'm not the one who did that redline and considering it's just a structural fix and not an attempt to redraw the picture, it being generic goes without saying. They didn't make a drawing of it so it doesn't have details and flourish. That's not its purpose. Its only purpose is to show the original artist what errors exist in their drawing beneath the detail so really saying it's "generic" is a non-issue.

Hey guise. Need help. I'm trying to do a Marvel fan art thingy here. This is just the sketch. I did some really crappy line art just to get an idea of the composition and stuff and I did a really simple pass with an airbrush so I'd have an idea for the lighting in the image. Absolutely everything is going to be overpainted with some nice hard painterly brushes (Don't want any of that airbrush shit showing through). I'm probably going to flatten and darken the image so I can start building the forms again from dark to light.

I'd really like to hear what you guys think of the lighting and composition in the scene. I don't really care about the character design yet. I deliberately leave that shit open so I can figure it out while I'm painting the final image. So I'm basically looking for an overall review of "feel"/colour and composition of the image. Not so much a detailed analysis on shit like the horrible prison bars or the or the lack of design on Mysterio over there. Overpainting is highly encouraged and don't be afraid to tell me you fucking hate everything in the image as this is just like 4h. into this thing and I could still change everything...

Tl;dr: Need help with lighting, composition and color. Going for realism. Gonna overpaint everything.

Maybe play with color a bit. Stitching of different color from the base clothing. Maybe yellow/gold colored accents to smaller details of the red piece. Possibly even alternating vertical stripes of the white defined by the existing stitch boundaries.

Overall it's pretty neat. Hair thickness around the hairline seems inconsistent - hair around the temples looks thinner but the top of the head (meeting the forehead) looks a lot thicker. Almost looks like a helmet.

I don't like how the head she's sitting on is oriented the same way as her head. Almost looks like the same base sketch was used for both, but mirrored. I think it might look a little more interesting to see the stone head from the underside instead of the top.
