Face looks cuter now but it's kind of unfortunate you did away with all the personality. There was so much flow to it before, now it looks like her body's alive and her head is a porcelain doll. Didn't mean it as an insult to that anon. I personally like Terry's work and children's book illustration. Respect your opinion, though.

>> No.2791879

>>2791790

This is all opinion, and I don't know the intent of your work.

I think it's not the physical size of the head that is slightly jarring, it's more the size of the features.

The nose seems to be leaning a little too much under the right eyebrow, making it look sunken in (like the gap in a skeleton, where the nose would be). That in turn is flattening the nose/mouth area.

There is a really nice cheekbone on the right side, but the shadow of the left side on the opposite cheekbone doesn't match the right one. It looks like it's more gaunt on the left than on the right. Also, the shadow of the left cheekbone starts higher than the right one, which makes it look a little strange.

The jaw that starts under the ear seems a bit too low. If that's intentional, disregard this comment. If changing the jawline alters the face too much, you can move the ear slightly downwards to match better with the eyebrows and nose.

I think the hair on top looks awesome- especially that highlight, but what would help is to add some hair by the ears. Not a sideburn or anything but a few strands that will help ground the hair.

Her left arm (the arm that's on top) could be helped by added the lump of brachioradialis/extensor carpi radialis longus. Those are the two of the muscles that form a lump near the elbow. Her hand looks really good and I really like the spread of her fingers, it looks really natural to me. I think the color of the gloves actually works really well with the black of her dress (it's not that easy to get brown/black to look good together).

Her other arm looks a little off. Her hand and wrist are bending at a natural angle which isn't followed by her arm-showing a really strange bend there. And her fingers on that hand aren't the same width as her other fingers. Although I can see that it's still WIP.

>> No.2791889

>>2791790

Continued.

The orb (?) that's on the lower half of her body doesn't feel grounded. I see a slight shadow underneath it but if its heavy, perhaps adding some weight lines around the orb onto the dress will make it seem as if its part of the dress. If its supposed to be floating, I would suggest adding some atmosphere behind it to minimize confusion.

The dress itself is a rich black and might be helped if you add lighter shades of de-saturated blue (or yellow depending on your light.) Nothing too light but some contrast would help sell the folds of the dress because it looks very nice but the dark black/even darker black shadows are too close to each other in value and might end up looking a little muddy. What would also help is bounce light from the wall/floor. That would give you the option of using some other colors that will give the dress a little more definition.

The shoes look great IMO. Shoes are not the center of attention so they don't particularly need crazy detail. That highlight looks baller but whats hurting it (IMO) is the slightly messy outlines that kill the crisp edges. If your highlight is that strong (which implies a crisp, highly light sensitive material) making sure that the rest of the outline follows that material would work better.

For the ground/wall, I think you've done a really good job on choosing the colors. Light backgrounds look great with a dark subject. However, your shadow on the floor is black. It should be a dark brown. Take the ground color and take it halfway to black, that might work better for you. Not only will that give your comp some other colors, but it will also provide a lighter shadow area that doesn't interfere with your dress.

Overall, it's bitchin. keep going. Hope this helped a little.

This is pretty damn awesome. The arm closest to us looks amazing. That brachioradialis. *fans self*

There are a few things I've tried to fix, but please bear that this is opinion.

-biggest thing first, shortened the lower limbs. The length of the entire thigh is actually the length of the lower limb, foot included. That's a weird proportion thing even I didn't know about till recently- I always thought the thighs were the same length of the lower limb until the ankle. All my people were really weirdly tall but didn't look right. I didn't adjust the muscles of the lower limb to not look so stocky tho. (your Leg muscles on point).

-The acromian process of the scapula looks awesome, but the placement is a little too low. The top of the bicep (where the spine of the scapula hits) is right on, but then there's a gap and then the scapula seems to start. I've had models who do look different than the norm, but sometimes it's less about being truthful to the model than it is about LOOKING right.

-Although there would prolly be a shadow under the deltoids, (that would be the teres major/infraspinatus), the sharpness of it makes the arm look pasted on.

-The bottom of the scapula vs the rest of the lats and isn't that large a gap (usually). (I don't see your model only your drawing). So I smoothed it out a little. That gives the eye more of a smooth road to follow.

-Added the serratus ant. and the external obliques next to the lats. that would be really visible in that pose, considering how fit this dude is.

-Rounded out the ext. obliques (the part right above the hipbone.) If he's so crunched then it would be a little more rounded as that is a place where fat accumulates. On that note, I rounded out the front of his abdominal area for the same reason.

-The butt looks really good. All I did was make the Tensor fasciae latae a little more pronounced.

Overall, this looks really really good. Keep going.

Yes you're right, that shadow below the deltoid muscle looked a bit unnatural, and the other features of the thorax give a more aesthetic look on him.

This days I went back on drawing again but I want to know more on the anatomical configuration of the body, so I'm starting to read the book "Classic Human Anatomy In Motion", so this plus your critique are helping me A LOT to understand this anatomical features. Thank you :D!!

If you're looking to improve your anatomy, I might suggest Rey Bustos' classes. He teaches online as well and is one of the most insane dedicated teachers I have ever had the pleasure of taking. He knows anatomy inside out.

I had an issue where I would open an anatomy book and even though I was reading it wouldn't stick.

I posted some of the homework I would do for him. He did wonders on my anatomy.

Your work is really good and anatomy would really help push you to be amazing ! Keep at it and merry christmas!!!

Looks good so far. My advice however, would be to slooowwwwww doooooowwwwwn.

The problem is that your brushstrokes look loose. As Richard Schmidt said in his book, Alla Prima, looseness is not the lack of control but the ultimate mastery of it. That means you know what you are doing SO WELL that you don't need more than a few strokes to say what you want.

While we have a general idea of the man, a lot of the internal shapes and colors lack definition. Also the stroke economy is too incoherent- there's too much noise.

Maybe for the next one you do, try copying a portrait from Sargent- BUT!! Try to also maintain his stroke economy. That means, if you see only 3 brushstrokes to indicate the forehead, you do the same. It's going to be frustrating as all hell but it will probably help you.

Otherwise it's a good start. The general idea and colors are there and your dude looks way happier, which is awesome. Merry Christmas :)

I also attached a portrait that has really clear brush strokes

I think your work can benefit from some stroke economy. The textures look great, but there's too much everywhere at the same density. There's no difference between the details in the rocks at the back vs the rocks at the front. What that does is overload the eye with too much information.

On that note, I've simplified a lot of your strokes (I just did it in general, you can choose when and where you want simpler strokes.) But the general note would be that the Focus of your painting should be where there are the highest amount of strokes. You've got great texture everywhere, on the second round, focus on placing texture where you want your focal point to be.

-Secondly, I've simplified a lot of your shadows and cleaned up the edges of many rocks. The beauty of rock as a material is they usually have crisp edges, so lasso tool is your friend here. Make sure when you are painting that the edges of your strokes mimic the material you are trying to paint. (Think of edges of grass vs cut rock).

cont. p2

>> No.2793012

>>2792644

Pt.2

-Third, you've done a really good job placing the right values but there are a few spots where there are light rocks on light backgrounds. That makes it hard to figure out the distance. When the surface of a rock is bright, I would suggest the rock behind it be slightly darker to make sure they read correctly.

-bounce light from water it important! So it atmospheric perspective. I've added a little bit of perspective behind select rocks to increase distance. (This is where having crisp edges helps.)

-I've increased the brightness on the tall vertical rocks because I assume they're getting more light and have done to the same to all the facing rocks. This creates a stronger contrast.

Overall, this looks really good. All that's left are a few tweaks that will really help sell the material. Don't forget that lasso is your friend here, using it to make crips edges on the rock faces will help you avoid muddy edges.

Anyways, keep going bruh. U got dis.

I've decided to post in these threads everytime they come up. I have come to realize that I kind of need to do this.
There are just too many questions that have been left unanswered and a lot of it keeps me up at night.

Sometimes I wonder what it would have been like if I kept up with my old buddy Forrest Imel, Lancer Idenoure, maybe Choob, or perhaps the Crimson Daggers. But mostly... I am bored and have nobody to talk to.

I've done a few things here and there, even had my own thread here dedicated to the drawing of dicks on classical pieces.
But a lot of my practice is spontaneous and only happens in brief moments of nostalgia. So maybe 5-6 times every 4 months or so do I stir from my deathly slumber to draw something. Might as well be a dick.

Remember that even if you don't find the right pose you can still use several pieces of reference, there are literally no downsides to using reference when drawing.

I'm not an expert but i do have some tips that might help. the plane is under direct light from the sun and even if you plane is white it will still have dark shadows and reflections from the sky/ground. also, I tried to fix the perspective of the plane, I referenced UAVs here because their design is similar to yous. As for the landscape, I added color/value variations to the sky, I also added atmospheric perspective so instead of separating mountains with value i kept them close in value and separated them by adding lighter value fog. I found the bottom row of mountains out of place their color give a melancholy feeling compared to the rest of the image maybe you should try and spread the farm fields across the mountains to give them color. The last thing i did is change the yellow fields to a darker value because they also looked out of place.

Oh boy! Storytime.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClQcUyhoxTg

There was a period where I had become incredibly depressed. I couldn't stand to even look at my own work, feeling like it didn't represent what I had set out to do. This frustration grew as I began to hate everything and everyone.
A few drinking problems later and I all but withdrawn from the world.

I burnt out and didn't really even know about it until later.

I won't say that disappearing is the right thing to do because I still deeply regret it. But in the end it put a lot of things into perspective and gave me the time to experience the world a little bit more.

we all saw that video, its whats to be expected, its a sketch book.
and im not even agreeing with you, its all sloppy yes, but his worst sloppiest sketch that exists within his oldest crappiest crayon filled book, is still leagues better than your best finished piece, and im taking into account "future brian" too.

even you in 20 years time, will still not amount to the most basic sketch done by Ruan jia.
thats just a fact.

everything you do , in some way or another is just a hack attempt at another famous artists style.
you don't get famous for climbing Everest the same way someone else already has (not to confuse your drawings with doing something hard, like actually achieving the summit of Everest)

only the most basic Doctor Who loving mother fuckers are entertained if only for a brief moment before they forget about your van gogh styled paintings existence.

the days of trail blazing and paying no heed to fundamentals are dead, ten minutes of studying post modernist theory would enlighten you to that, its partly why people just draw bland anime these day (for a majority) its because they accept the fact that every conceivable style of art-making has been achieved to some degree or another and are contempt in drawing anime.

you however think that what you are doing is new, exciting and most pitiful of all, important.

this is not the case.

if you truly want to live from your art, brian, paint what others want to see, not what you want them to see.

who the fuck will buy a sloppily drawn portrait of some random old skeleton looking bitch?

your perspective on the art world is dangerously deluded by romantic aspirations of grandeur.

the days in where artists where capable of saving the world are gone.

art is dead.

draw anime for money.

you want me to turn into kronprinz. you want me to give up on traditional media and a love of what came before me and fully embrace illustration. you'd rather i never do another traditional painting again and instead study photos digitally for the next 5 years and come out as the next great patreon kid just because you don't think art is regressive, and latching onto what was in vogue in the late 1800s is a dead end, and should instead just give up and make that sweet, sweet over rendered western anime money.

I don't buy it. I don't think the future is digital illustration and concept art. i think that's short sighted, and I have a very firm belief that tastes will slowly go back to what they were in the past.

I'm not ahead of my time, I'm just doing what I think is going to make me the most money in the long term. I don't see long term success doing illustration. I think it's going away sooner than you think, and art like mine ( even if mine isn't the best example) is going to be what's popular again. I don't have any particular attachment to van gogh, or post-impressionism, or any of that stuff. It is simply a risk I am taking that I will have wanted to study these things as I get older because that's where the money will be in the coming years.

I am simply trying to be adaptable. People will be looking for a new van Gogh, or a new Picasso, or a new Cezanne, and I am trying to fill one of those roles, or be somewhere between them.

We don't need more Krons. We don't need more Sakimis. That stuff is going to go away.

i think I'm not explaining myself well. I'm not saying illustration will go away I'm saying it has legs of maybe 20-40 years, but after that I think what I'm doing will be in favor again.

And not for the reasons you think. It won't be because we loved how that artwork looked, it'll be because we hated the people that made it. I don't think van Gogh was a good person. And that's part of why I have a hard time appreciating his artwork. I want to be better than him in my personal life.

I am more or less dedicated to replacing him or at least doing it right this time because I am convinced that my lifestyle will allow me to accomplish what he failed to do.

I have the same sensitivity to sexuality and poverty that he did, but I am acting on those urges where he gave in to them. I am committed to never having sex or masturbating again unless it is to have a child. I will only have one child. I am attempting to live the perfect life in the minds of women around me. I am atoning for my sins, which is something van Gogh never did. He died a drunk, prostitute loving scumbag who made beautiful paintings. I have cut out everything in my life other than my ear and made art the only thing. Any other comparisons to his artwork other than that are coincidental or possibly just fated to be because I sure as hell don't go out of my way to draw those comparisons.

I am just the start of our regression back to how things used to be.

There will be other people who have the same strong reactions to Cezanne, Picasso, Michelangelo, Dali, etc.

Once all men have done what I've done and neutered their sexuality there will be a worldwide attempt to right the wrongs of our past artistically. Because we can do better than those ass holes.

brian, you do all this, for what reason?
you die in the end, and for nothing.
the earth is not worth saving, its not unique.
sins? what sins?
sins are not worth atoning for either in the reach of eternity, and if its karma you are talking about, one does not get on a roller-coaster and only expect it to go up...

>Once all men have done what I've done
there you go again, expecting your narrow world view to be the only one.

>I am attempting to live the perfect life in the minds of women around me
why would you bother appeasing every woman, yo do know that some women are trash, just like some men are trash, it makes me wonder why you do not say that you are attempting to live the perfect life in the minds of all "people". but instead you say women, that in itself is a sexualization, as it is not men that you wish to "attract".
and are you telling us, the users of this board that you only intend to have sex purely for procreation or are you just practicing for that one woman that you actually think you have a shot with as a "foot in the door" so to speak.

>i am not like other men m'lady (tips paint splattered fedora), for as you can see i do not prize you as a sexual object and merely wish to participate in the act of sex for the purpose of child bringing only

that seriously sounds like me at the age of 17. i then lost my virginity and all that shit gets tossed out the window. know why brian. because we are animals pretending to be better. we are not. the name of the animal we are is a human.

proportion and measurement errors aren't necessarily bad, as long as you lean into it. tighten up the likeness in the eyes, mouth, and face shape/form and honestly you can reorganize features as much as you want.

sometimes it even adds character to otherwise boring portraiture, but you have to be able to recognize when you are making "mistakes". or if you make a "mistake" with where a feature should be at least draw it well.

you were fairly close in your picture, you just need to take a step back and evaluate what you've put down so far. try to take yourself out of what you've already done and not be precious with the lines you've made.

I will say though, the colors you put down for the most part are accurate. I colorpicked what you already had to make these changes.

its hard to be new to drawing. i understand the frustration. im pretty new to being able to draw exactly what im looking at its something i've been obviously working towards but the memories of fucked proportions and anatomy are too fresh in my memory.

I wouldn't want to be in your shoes, but I completely empathize with "I know the line I'm looking at but when I draw it it's wrong".

Advice like "erase and redraw until it looks right" don't help people in your position because it's honestly just better to start a new piece at that point.

So that's all I can tell you. Draw and draw and draw and don't worry about getting it right just put your focus into every piece and trust that the more you do it the better you'll get.

it's good to be painterly. it's bad to just start scribbling and call it detail.

how do i avoid this next time, should i just spend more time building up to the detail, or am i fucked

>> No.2798033

>>2798028
you can avoid this by designing. do preliminary sketches of each part at different angles to get a feel for what exactly you want it to look like. try to be clever about it. don't just block in a brown and scribble some gold on top of it, really think about why each accent is there. If that means your designs have to be simpler as a result so be it.

as it is it's hard to even tell if the design of this guy is symmetrical, and for the parts like the gauntlet it's really hard to make out exactly what the design is even supposed to be.

thank you for the advice, i really appreciate it.

I don't feel competent enough to keep working on this one, so i think i'll just scrap it and try incorporating some design work into my workflow.

Most of it looks pretty good. On the middle one I'd say the shoulder on the left is a bit too far to the left and the breast as well. Both breasts seem a tad high as well. Bottom right corner's night but you made the mistake of having the back/farther thigh coming right out of the hip instead of below it. If you look at a skeleton you'll see the top of the leg bone connects at the bottom of the pelvis, not the top, so you want a solid section for the hips before the legs start. The top and bottom middle have many problems but just keep studying and you'll get better at figures like those.

Thanks for the crit anon. I have life study lesson but the model is an middly Old muscular man. But I definitely need to study more. I try to work with the less references possible but I'm not sure if it's me being stubborn or stupid.

As someone who's spent years trying to draw without references let me tell you, use references. Take time to draw without them for sure because that's how you develop style and get comfortable enough to draw freely. But the more I've progressed with art the more useful I've realized reference is. It adds so much more enriching detail than you can ever remember. While you're still learning be exact about following your references and life models to drill in the base info to start free drawing, then later use reference loosely to enhance things. That's my suggestion anyway.

Did the base rendering, still have to add textures, merge the outline with the color and refine some sketchy borders.

It bothers me that it looks like I only have one style of shading... if that makes sense.
