is there any context to why the character is leaning back like that? the hair should indicate the direction of the character's movement. the right arm is hard to see because of the state of your sketch; why is it clenched so close to the body? Why is the sword pointed in that direction? it looks super awkward. The neck looks extraordinarily thin but that might because of your style. The expression is lifeless compared to the pose.

Rendering metal in a vacuum is a nightmare, so bullshit a background and itll actually be easier to handle. The quick and cheap method for it is cool light on top (sky) and warm(dirt) or green(grass) on the bottom surfaces. Treat it not as metal but as a reflection of the world around it. You can also tie the two figures together by having the light/colours from one show on the armor of the other.

That's normal when you start out; just don't stop. have you tried doing still life? slow down a bit. pick a random object on your desk and break down its shape and form. draw the overall shape (box, cylinder, spheroid whatever) and add details from there. Then do the same process again on another object or the same object at a different angle. and again and again until it starts to look less shitty. Start off with simple objects. You can try it on photos as well.
This process may seem boring but it's worth it if your work looks like crap. If you jump ahead and if you bite off more than you can chew, it won't help you if you don't understand the form.
Also, Post your work (in /beg/ at your discretion)

The tiger's stripes could be a bit more natural (make it look like fur). I think it won't compromise the drawing's style. Especially since the tiger's shading is quite natural.

Pictures are completely useless if you don't know what you're looking at. I'd say there is no bigger waste of time than trying to learn how to draw people from photographs with no prior background in life drawing. You're literally ice-skating up hill at that point. I wish someone would have said something earlier. It's an obvious pit-fall in learning how to draw people when you see all of these instructors drawing from pictures. They've already absorbed the information from life-studies, and you're left wondering why it's so hard for you as you watch them work from intuition/memory. You can read all the books you like. None of it will help you if you aren't doing some form of life-drawing. It's the thing that will make or break artistic progress.

The next time I see someone with flat, ugly doctor-tier anatomy, I'll know what to tell them since I've gone through it myself. People were very enigmatic about "anatomy" whenever I posted my work ITT. Now I finally understand what they meant, but it would have been very easy to explain in a response.

At least I know what muscle I'm drawing from various angles, so the time wasn't a total waste. I still can't believe how easy it is to learn when you can run through 20 or so models. You internalize virtually everything faster than you can believe.

I always thought my mind was too weak, and I simply needed to grind mindlessly. I never realized how imperative it is to break apart models from a 3D space.

This is a quick painting I did as a gift for the folks.
Acrylic on 12 x 9 canvas. The biggest problem I had was I am using a cheap color set with like 68 pieces. 12 watercolor, 12 acrylic, 12 oil, oil pastels, and soft pastels. The colors are all hues so they mix and get muddy quick. I couldn't get the right orange for the sky.

Keep going on, read how to draw for the places you feel as if you need work on (especially working on line work as you going to fast I feel). Also try to base stuff more towards reality, while you've chosen star wars which well known the thing they're standing on is unrecognizable, try to relate the enviroment to the characters.

Like for example instead of a bunch of jumbled up 3D shapes try to replicate maybe this scene but add your own style and imagery.

thick brush is hiding all of your mistakes + if you keep at it, can stunt your learning. you can't really tell if you 'know' what marks you put down or if your brain is filling in the blanks (which in this case t's pretty obviously the case looking at this. use a thinner brush for studying + you'll see where all the gaps are in your knowledge. apart from that proportions are ok, right arm is fucked.

You're pretty good at heads and faces but your anatomy's a little weak. Drawing from life and photos is good but when you want to do imaginative drawings you'll need a deeper understanding of the structures of what you're drawing. It'll help your referenced work too. Right now the referenced things aren't as polished as they could be and it looks like it's due to that missing anatomical knowledge- you not quite knowing how to fill in the detail because you're unsure what forms are there and it's hard to make out from the picture because it's so subtle, like the necks for instance. I'd recommend studying muscles and bones and drawing from construction ('draw through' method) for a switch up from a contour and detail oriented start.

Well just to be clear I don't mean you shouldn't draw so many faces. Studying anatomy and learning the forms will help fill in detail, so ideally you'd alternate between sketching and painting because you'll want to incorporate that new info into your working method. Besides rendering is also a good way to explore form. Whether you focus on faces or hands or any particular body part though, the important part I think would help you is taking a break from filling things in and drawing construction lines through the figure, as if they're see through. Practicing drawing the forms all the way around and feeling them all the way through. That probably sounds flighty and dumb but it'll improve both the structure as well as you knowing how light and shadow can be used in painting to show that structure. Either way good luck and drop by with progress sometime.

One last thing to clear up though, it's not the fact that you're leaving out detail that shows the underlying issue. It's the inelegance of it. There are places where it doesn't taper or blend in a way that shows a proper form, some areas have much detail others don't. It doesn't look purposeful, it looks like you're struggling. Forms can be very simple but if they're not informed they won't look right. You can see in this piece by Adam Hughes there isn't a ton of hard defined detail on her but what's there is consistent in the way it's simplified, and nothing is extraneous or distracting every mark has purpose. This ability to choose what needs to be shown or not comes from thorough knowledge. This is just my observation and reasoning for the advice I suggested but as I said, whatever you decide to do good luck.
