If you've studied the face a lot it's not a huge jump to throw on some big ears and tusks.

He's trying to do something and not realizing that there's a huge gap in his learning that grinding figures and anatomy doesn't cover.

To get good at this sort of thing, cartooning and constructing whatever from imagination, you have to practice those skills on their own and develop them. You can't just do a bunch of life drawing and then expect to be good at drawing cartoons simply because you've spent a long time copying images that have nothing to do with them. There's also the matter of stylizing that comes into account, and if you haven't studied that enough to know what works and what doesn't, you're going to end up with something really unappealing.

Unfortunately we're just seeing the lack of experience in what is supposed to be a live instructional video. I like the guy and I don't think he deserves to get hate, but he's clearly jumped the gun.

Dudes, I personally like Proko a lot, he's a nice guy and talented in his particular area. But there's no need to get salty over people criticizing him. We're cringing out of an honest desire to see him improve on what this stream was for in the first place: drawing things on the fly, using the fundamentals. This is stuff he probably should have a better grip on already in my opinion.

I like Proko's figure drawing lessons. But a guy that can't draw from imagination shouldn't teach how to draw from imagination.

1. Proko started the stream by saying he only recently started drawing from imagination and told everyone that he isn't that good at it. He said he was just sharing what his opinions on it.
2. he spent like less then 2-3 minutes per sketch except for the last head one. Do you really expect comparable quality to his tutorial sketches when he probably spends way more time on them?
3. Just cause the art wasn't that good doesn't mean that the advice wasn't decent. He gave the basic advice everyone here knows. Build visual library, construct everything, also draw from life, try rotating objects and manipulating their perspective, etc. just cause some of the stuff sounds boring or unappealing to you doesn't mean that it's not solid advice.
I think the biggest take away from this is just that you should always be drawing what you want along side your studies. The /ic/ meme of focusing solely on realism will get you to where proko is. There's no need to hate on the guy tho.

Animators draw from life as a complimentary exercise. Their ratio of imagination to life drawing is probably around 10 to 1.

You can theorize about this as much as you want, but it's simply not holding up in practice. It's not just Proko either, it's a very common thing among fine artists who draw mostly from life. If you want to get good at drawing from imagination, you need to practice drawing from imagination. A lot.

If all you do is draw from life, you can not expect to get good at drawing from imagination as a side effect, it simply doesn't happen. I'm not advocating to never draw from life mind you, but treat it as a complimentary exercise and don't make it your primary focus.

It all makes sense now. Proko just wanted to draw cute cartoony stuff all along. All those years doing long poses and still lives was a distraction from his real goals. Young Proko got into 3d animation because it allowed him to produce cute and cartoony stuff that was better than what he could draw. Learning figure and object construction is a very basic, fundamental, and important element in drawing from imagination. No one is arguing that point.

Unless they are, then I got nothing for that or them.

The overall point, though, is that Proko hasn't used what he teaches.

He's a guy who wanted to do imaginary work well. That's not even up for debate.

What happened along the way is that he personally did not devote time to drawing from imagination. He teaches the methods of construction and constructing well, but those are elements to help you create from imagination better.

But at no point is that actually going to work your imaginative skills. The only way, the only way to make sure the work you produce from your imagination is going to to get a proper work out and for the product itself to be better is to actually do it.

That's the point. Proko isn't a bad guy teaching bad things. His mistake was leaning too hard towards doing things "correctly" that he never allowed himself to do things, fail, fail, fail, and fucking fail until that imaginative work got better.

tl;dr - Proko exercised his academic biceps, but completely skilled leg day.
