FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email lava@lavaflake.com.

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

Out of curiosity

How many people are currently active? Is there some kind of internal commenting bonanza where people look at your drawings and say they are shit?

And is everyone doing it digitally? Or is it fine to scan/take pictures of drawings done with a pencil on a piece of paper?

Can I make an account without participating in the challenge?

I intend to participate when I somehow get my scanner working, it refuses to scan anything for some reason, but I'm curious about the quality and quantity of the work that people put in there.

(Also I want to know how hard I'll get btfo'd by other people once I do start because I've been drawing for a total of 2 days and I don't know shit, but this challenge seems like fun and like it'll motivate me)

>> No.2780284

>>2780267
Go for the site in the op. There are around 60-ish people that submit daily I think. There's no comment feature on the site so people usually just comment in the thread if they want to. And traditional stuff is fine, plenty of people do it. The only thing not allowed is 3d modeling or any non 2-d stuff. Animations are good too.

question for you guys. Does it feel like time goes by slower when you look back at your art now that you draw so much? For example, back when I only drew like once every couple weeks if look back at a piece I did months ago and it'd feel like I only did it a week ago. But right now I was going over my last 5 submissions and it feels like the last 2 were from weeks ago even though I just did them. Idk, maybe it's just me but I find this happening to me often, wanted to know if it happens to you guys too.

I get what you mean. Don't know if it's a good thing, since I remember the two or three pieces I'd do a month last year much easier than like the last ten pieces I've done this month, but hopefully it's a good sign.

Whenever people talk about
>when did you start taking art seriously guys?
my answer stays the same; only recently. Seems like it refreshes every few months as I hit a new level of working harder and pouring more into it, so even after a couple years of LAS I'll probably still say "oh I only really got serious a couple months ago".

I'll reach top speed someday but just slowly I guess, I don't have the acceleration maybe.

cacklepotato - really liking where this rough painting with the oranges and blues is going. i hope you actually finish one of your paintings some day
sasori - something about poorly drawn porn is always amusing to me, like cringe threads. study some more anatomy dude, really.
Choob - your girls are shit, but this alien mans. i like him. looks nice.
BondageFairy - clicked on your thumb expecting more shit, but your stuff is--- ok. not horrible. ok.
haachan - your work is inconsitent. some days its amazing and others it looks like you've posted from someone's shitty deviant art account. get it together because you have obvious potential.

Could I have a bit of criticism of what I posted? I'm, like, beginner tier... but no one in the /beg/ Beginner Thread decided that I was worth enough salt to get one

Disclaimer: I suck so take this with a grain of salt.

Anyways, biggest thing that jumps at me is the long haired dudes head/neck area. He really shouldn't be turning that far, I think it might be physically possible but it looks super uncomfortable. I don't think anyone would wanna talk to someone with their head turned like that. The pose seems a little unnatural and stiff, seems like you might've been going for a more comfy vibe where he's listening to the other guy talk. Everything is a little too muddy and dark (not sure if that's what it actually looks like or if it's the pic) so nothing really stands out too much, the characters and background just kinda get smushed together and the viewer doesn't know where to focus. Perspective on the long haired dude might be off too, looks like he's tipping forward into space instead of sitting on the couch/bench/w/e. And also the face on the long haired dude is kinda off, placement of stuff like the eye and ear is off and it just looks flat. Speaking of flat, his legs look really flat too.

I'd recommend on brushing up on your fundies, do some gestures, learn more anatomy, practice perspective, and also do value studies.

Your work has good values; I've been told, though, that there's a method of physical shading known as directional shading. If you discard crosshatching in specific areas, and instead shade across the contour lines of each object: it will immediately become better understood in 3d space by the value-reader

The other tricks I know of is to set a darker darkest value. Mechanically speaking: see if you can practice blending the tones better.

I think you might be placing contours where they are not needed or where they don't physically appear

Anyway: everything else looks very good

I'm in no position to judge though, and I'm utter trite at shading (pic related) so take my advice with a grain of salt

Sorry chums I've been lazy recently.

Seffy: Really interesting colors. The image overall is kind of unsettling, but in a good way.

Barkode: Looking good, my dude. There's not really much to say other than that. I guess that can be either a good thing or a bad thing.

FinlayHeathi: I appreciate your physical sketchbook posting! Keep up the practice and never forget your primitive shapes.

Rorg: Those thumbnails are pretty sweet, and I really love the one with the bridge.

Jeremias: Excellent job practicing fundies! Only problem I see is the ellipses in your cylinders are a little too extreme.

Blarghu: You're doing well, but I would suggest trying a soft brush for your reflected light. Doing it with a hard brush tends to make it look messy.

Haachan: I love the flow in your work a lot. Also very cute!

Jerrybreem: Slight symmetry issues in the eyebrows, lips, and chin. Keep practicing and these small issues will go away.

Gottagitgud: I really enjoy the very 3-dimensional forms in your drawings.

Redpandaslave: Looking solid, but be careful of minor proportions errors. Your skull has really small teeth.

Crit Senses--Are tingling!

Redpandaslave, nice thick outlines on the skull, maybe try some varying line weights around the eye sockets and nasal cavity next time, if you ever do a skull like this again.

Soroneir, nice colors, I like how you got a lot out of the chosen color palette

Viktor my man, not sure if this will help you as it does me(sometimes), but as a warm up try drawing a bunch of 3D shapes and wrapping lines around them, it'll help you get a sense of form in the third dimension

Seffy...That foot is intentional right?...Right?
I like the coloring though.

Toyfu, I like the textures.

Shkimmilk, a cute pilot for a cute mech; as it should be

Aestro, nice deep colors, makes for some nice contrast between the flower and background.

Whizzard, you have a nice character here, and it needs to be perfected to sate me, so fix that foot facing towards the viewer, cause it looks off.

iinaa, work through some hampton or loomis my friend, I prefer hampton though. It really would aid you man. It certainly has for me. But don't forget to draw things you want to/enjoy, it's certainly important to draw for study and to learn, and even more so to put some application into those studies, but sometimes you need to unwind and just draw for fun. Sometimes I realize that when I draw for fun, it points out something that I need to focus on when studying and gives me a kind of guidance on what to do next.

Futashy, I see you are doing some beans. Good.

TekkyJ, an ok sakura. I guess. The muscle study isn't bad though, you've been gettin ok at the torso, legs when.

Caterpillar, nice shirts, render out that black vest though, it's lonely being a flat block of color.

Digitixe, I like the masks/helmets you've been doing. I'll take one full armor set please!

Munch, I'm sure you know, that face on the left most figure needs some adjustments. I like the shawl(I don't know what it really is) on the middle figure, the folds look good.

Echo, I am feeling those forms.

i actually quit las after 150 days, thinking about rejoining cause i'm letting myself get lazy again. for the record though, i've been drawing for 3 years, and before las I had a collection of about 230 drawings in total. That's about 76 pieces per year (small number because a lot were paintings that took up to 2 weeks to finish, because i'm a lazy shit). With las, I drew more than that in a little over 2 months. so i obviously improved, especially in speed and accurately replicating a study/reference.

i spent 2-3 hours per submission tho. as far as i remember there were some people who didn't even look like they reached 30 minutes, so it's no surprise if many people were slow to improve or didn't at all.

I haven't been at it for nearly as long as some others but definitely feel like I've made good improvement. I mostly joined up to build a habit after seriously slouching off and also to break my nerves about other people seeing my work. It's also been a good way to constantly be trying something new, and I rightfully get pulled up when I try to do something without proper research. Sometimes some comments come past that don't explain themselves properly and end up just being negative criticism but whatever I could use a thicker skin anyway. All in all, a good learning tool, would do again.

I'm not really happy with my progress though. I only do an hour and a half or sometimes 4 hours per day, and I feel like I could have been much better off if I put in more time.

I'll be sticking with LAS until it dies or I do. I'm still in it to win it baby. In the future I'd like to open up more books and do more focused studies though. Hopes are high for 2017!

Barkode: that arm looks too short. you didn't really capture the foreshortening that's supposed to happen.

>> No.2784034

FinlayHeathi: You know how to make multiple different likenesses; work heavily on value control and get rid of this picture because he has the neck of a sloth

viktor: Unless you're doing caricature, and this sounds silly because of course you iterative drawing could teach you otherwise: the length of the torso is about 3 heads large! Too short. Come back to this every once in a while and steal stylistic elements from it. Try wrapping your shading around the form(s).

Louse: Watch carefully the proportions of that woman's head; it's slightly too cylindrical . If you look back to the Asaro head you did (and it was a good study form-wise): you'll see that the forehead doesn't usually jut forwards as you've shown. Pay a bit of closer attention to that, and only proceed to construct it that way when you've obtained assurances from that study. Also push for lighter lights; the darks are dark enough

CRT: I can't criticize you; I'm too bad at arms to understand this spectacle

Yotsuyu: Start to make a methodological (or iterative) index of features. Your figure drawing is quite great at this point, but as an alternative direction a rookie like I can offer you: you should try now to work of likenesses. Draw an eye and make minute adjustments to its planes; draw thin, fat and flaring noses. It might help you make characters which look distinct, which I perceived as your biggest flaw.

cacklepotato: Above me; I can't tell you anything that you haven't heard before

Tabascoshrimp: Very good values, but I'm not sure if the plane directly above the eyebrows should be that dark. Maybe it should? I don't know

Seffy: I really like the veteran bipedal animal. Perhaps misshapen drop-shadow? The eyebrows going into the eyes is a little strange

innocent: I feel like innocent's already made it and is only here so that he can have a prompt every day to draw something from. There is such a variety of content in his history of posts. I believe the personified Chinese lantern = evil

Crit Senses--Are tingling!

Kirkae, cute cat, I like the volume the dress implies around her carnal body.

Runnerman, may I suggest you look at some Baroque paintings, I think the exaggeration in their figures would help you greatly, it seems like some of the figures have a nice gesture line, but then that energy and motion is lost with the sort of straight, boxy silhouettes that enclose them. Keep at it my man.

Skellyjelly, I like the different hair styles, I wanna run my fingers through them! I also like that middle portrait with the people looking at one another, it feels kinda tense despite them just being faceless box heads.

Rozzle, I like the paint strokes around the face a lot, especially the cheek bone, but something bothers me about the eyes, but maybe it's just me.

Nelli, nice values, don you plan on taking it any further? The left eye seems like it isn't sunken in the socket enough though.

Oneironaut, I've enjoyed your figures and heads that you have done, is this from a book? If so, try making some sort of scene or character if you can, time to take it up a notch.

Finlay...You've seen it all, haven't you?

jbrennan, Im feelin that ab crunch, good work.

Jeremias, nice Loomis heads

Blarghu, nice drills, if you know what I mean haha(I'm talking about the actual drills)

HumanBean, a true humanbean, nice heads and nice facial variety, maybe try some more extreme perspectives?

Rorg, I'm not sold on the foreshortening on the arms, but I still like it, along with the different attires too, keep at it.

Hman my....hman(?) that is looking sharp and crisp. I can almost feel myself suffocating on top the spire.

Chuntao, not bad, but the face seems kinda...squished? I like the values though it does convey the form nicely.

Cath I like the gestures, especially the right most one.

manadabes, I feel the power in those clenching fists, nice lines too.

Hey lassies, Secret Santa anon here, hope you're working on your Christmas cards or have maybe even sent them already~

I can't make the LAS challenge after all because I want to keep my identity secret, but I guess you need to have submitted for a while before you can make challenges, so I can't create one in time. I could make one on my own account but I don't want people to get excited thinking I'm coming back, which I just don't have time to do with work right now.

Could someone else make the challenge to make Christmas cards for LAS/lassies in general, just to run between now and the 25th? It'd be a big help, there were a few people who couldn't or wouldn't do the secret santa but would be up for a challenge.

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

It's not connected to the physical cards in any way, this is for lassies to make Christmas cards for LAS and the lassies in general, not a 1 on 1 thing like the secret santa. Also means they don't have to give out their addresses or feel under pressure since it's for a specific person.

More like the making get well soon cards for Lava thing people did, except for the lassies, not their negligent creator.

Crit Senses--Are tingling!

shkimmilk, she just keeps getting cuter!

Munch I like the torsos, slap that ass on the left for me!

420faiggit, I like that pattern on the head, and I like that branch, its kinda rough to discern what the head looks like for me, but ay I like it regardless.

Rhydwyn, I like how it reads as a thumbnail and up close I see some nice visible brush strokes.

Slump, you're 'awful' sketches piss me off.

Lokki, I've always liked your take on hair, even if the bangs look like bananas, it works.

Coinhero, I dig the idea and colors for that sharp contrast, but the body of the bird-demon looks like it's not right, I don't know, it comes off as flat or skewed, which maybe you were going for.

iinaa, so close! You took the time to show the lower part of her torso receding into space and that looks good, but the arms in turn dont look like they are rest on her knees.

peewee, nice bass, I caught a cute flounder once, almost kept it as a pet. Try ditching those dark outlines next time and see how it goes.

amaxin1, noice pen work on the figures, do some crazy perspective shots to really make use of the pens ability to create varying line weights.

lolicare, what a CUTE

trips of truth. I have a month off but you're right. It took me a while just to look through the first guys 300+ submissions and even then it'd be hard to pick out the right stuff. I might just end up picking stuff where he slacked off and missing his better stuff, it'd take at least an hour or so to do a proper one for one person. I don't think I could do that for 23 people, that time would be better spent drawing.
