Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email lava@lavaflake.com.

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

i don't mean to sound rude but please ask me questions on my tumblr ! i almost never check the thread. to answer your question I usually paint until I'm satisfied with the result, this can mean 45 minutes or multiple hours. that last Mads Mikkelsen value study was around 1,5 hours. i've been painting drawing and painting for about 2 years now, and i remember how confusing values can be, but what i've found helps most is painting a lot and not getting focused on details. eventually you'll be able to easily recognise values and colors without having to use the color picker. one last thing, i've often heard people (me included) blame their values, colors and rendering for their work looking bad when the real reason is simply bad fundamentals.

any good refs for studying hips/waist, and generally how the legs connect to the torso? also @choob going through your old posts to make pic related i saw you using texture brushes and i felt like it was working pretty well, gave a nice comfy feel the some of the rough landscapes, especially the snowy ones. I dunno why you stopped using them, but i feel like if you brought them back again it would add a lot considering how much more you know lighting and color wise. The #1 thing that i and probably most people get put off by in your work is the massive use of the soft brush. Im not saying to completely remove it from your workflow, but your paintings that have more hard edges are always much better.

choob has said over and over again that he wants to be able to great landscapes and capture life well in paint. Is studying from photos the IDEAL way to learn how to do this? Probably not, but is he better at examining his references and extracting the important colors and forms and describing them in his studies? I dont think you can deny that he is. Not only that, his imagination stuff has also improved, albeit not as much as it probably would have if that was is focus and aspiration, which it obviously isnt.

Some people have different goals and take different paths to get there saying "theyre not good at the thing they dont practice but that i want to do therefore they are bad" is silly. There is a direct connection between perspective and character design, perspective is a fundamental skill, character design is a discipline that uses that fundamental skill.

Painting from life and painting from imagination are disciplines that use very many overlapping skills. and doing one can get you better at the other, but choosing to focus on one is not the same as just choosing to ignore one of the fundamentals

I don't want to go into any real details about why I'm dropping but I've been dealing with a lot of issues that I can't seem to find an easy or quick solution to, and will also not have reliable internet access to be able to submit everyday.

do you have a pull up bar? you need something to hang from in order to actually stretch out your wrists properly. its never gonna have a real effect if you cant hang because theres a tendon in your arm that goes all the way from your shoulder to your hand and it cant be stretched in segments!
this is the kind of thing a doctor wont tell you, though through the internet now more people know of it.

if you really are in pain, do this carefully and maybe use your feet for support. hang for a minute at most and then rest for about 10 minutes. your wrist will start tingling if you do it gently and you'll know when it works.

remember to only hang from your fingers and not to use any arm muscle, any tension.

get a resistance band. those big thick rubber band things. you can do isometric exercises and all kinds of shit.
its kind of a chick thing, but really its almost 2017 so dont get caught up in that. you can get amazing workouts with a resistance band.
the applications are basically endless so google around to find something that suits you.

If it hurts a lot, like a sharp pain, keep it still. Make a brace and tie it up in a comfortable, reasonably straight position for a while and let it heal.

If it's a duller sort of pain look up Aikido warm up stretches. They're great for wrist stuff and can be as gentle or intense as you need them to be. If anything causes it sharp pain, stop doing that.

Also, if you have insurance see a doctor. Copay is usually cheap for a standard checkup at a family clinic and any place with a sports medicine specialist can probably diagnose the exact cause and give you some more medically proven methods.
