Therefore exaggerating that distinct, supposedly "asshole-ish" feature is far more interesting than doing some middle of the road bullshit with barely any personality.

It's basic characterization. There's only so much you CAN do in terms of personality when it comes to board tans, so exaggerating traits is highly encouraged.
