Do people just do this for practice or do they think this shit actually looks good

>> No.2762734

Hey OP, can you explain why you don't think it looks good? : )

>> No.2762738

>>2762734
Not OP, but the artist is getting too caught up small unimportant forms and the technique of outlining the cast shadow and blasting the core shadow. It's a formula that they are poorly applying to an area that doesn't need it, creating a bubbly weird deformed knee for no good reason.

>> No.2762757

yes they do it for practice, you should try it sometimes

light and value may be fucked, but the anatomy is on point

the reason is to study and understand those small, unimportant forms you fucking genius. Obviously they wouldn't do it in a full figure drawing.

I dunno dude, either the guy decided he wanted to hang a charcoal drawing of a fucking knee on his wall, or he just wanted to fucking study those "unimportant forms" because they're actually fucking important, especially the knee which has so much anatomy going in and out of it

Detail studies are a great practice, you know your figure drawing is getting decent when you can pose and render a seemingly boring part of the human body as if it was meant to be hung at a gallery.

Not OP, but let me give it a try:

>Red
There needs to be more material here. There is barely any space for a vastus medialis and a gracilis muscle there. With that fixed the slight cove would also make more sense

>Light blue
This structure either doesn't exist or is way over exaggerated. Maybe it's meant to be an adductor but those are never so pronounced.

>Yellow
This isn't wrong, but if you go into detail when drawing a knee you should really implement the muscles that can actually be visible. Medial you have the vastus medialis which dips slightly lower and is a bit larger than the lateral vastus lateralis muscle.

>Purple
These shadows don't really make sense coming from the same light source. Hard to put this into words.

>Blue
This doesn't exist. If it's supposed to be the medial condile of the tibia it's way too low.

>Green
With the shading the tibia appears to be bent far more than it should be.

Which sources did you learn this information from? This is by far the most informative post I've seen. I've made my way through Hampton and Loomis and looked at medical diagrams, but have yet to figure out how any of this actually gets applied practically.

>> No.2769674

>>2769392
It's all about knowing the 3D shapes. When you start learning to draw anatomy you start with very big shapes (legs as cylinders attached to cubes) and you work your way down to progressively smaller shapes. You just keep going for smaller shapes until it becomes pointless.

As for sources, pretty much the same as yours. For the small details you pretty much have to go for an anatomy atlas because there's no other source that covers those.
I do real life figure drawing, that helps too.

That said, it's pretty pointless. Nobody actually cares about those details. ITT with 40 posters nobody else pointed out those mistakes. What are the chances a non-artist would notice?

>> No.2769679

>>2769392
>>2769674
One more thing: A lot of the anatomy books for artists have small details wrong. So if you're starting out they're great. But for tiny details they're not reliable.

>> No.2769699

>>2769679
This holy fuck, I come from a scientific background and learned anatomy far before I learned how to draw and there's SO MUCH misinformation. You're better off just looking for good medical illustrations instead of Bridgman or Hampton

you didn't really fix anything you just turned a quicksketch form study into a muddy rendering with poor edge control.
plus you can't fix anything if you don't have the model in front of you, just looking at the original i can guess who the model is, and i know that it is more accurate to what his knee looks like than your paintover

I'd be more worried about the poor construction/anatomy.

Is that a fucking left leg or a right leg? Ankle is broken. Knees are definitely not like that. There are fucking non-existant muscles on the thigh, and there's no apparent connection between this leg and a human body. Like... where the hell is the pelvis?
