so i would like to study art composition, to break down artworks into their various parts to learn the various building blocks. whats the best way to do this? is there somewhere online like where a university puts up lectures on this stuff or are there any good books that come to mind?

Most information on composition is either flat out wrong like all those golden rectangle overlays, or it is formulaic like Edgar Payne's book. Just rely on your gut instinct and do lots of thumbnailing.

Compositional rules are the holy grail of bs.

If it looks good, it looks good. Experiment a bunch.
