Please make sure your posted image is clear, DOWNSIZED TO AROUND 1000 PIXELS WIDE, ROTATED TO THE CORRECT ORIENTATION, and that any unused space is cropped.

Does anybody know how to fix perspective scaling issues?

I don't know if this was ever addressed in perspective made easy, and if it was I guess I failed to understand it.

I basically want to know the average distance a VP is away from the viewer at a ground level. I really have no clue, so everything is messed up in my drawings when I do them in interior settings as you can see.

The distance of the horizon varies based on the viewer's height (ie you can see farther the higher up you are), but at a standing height the horizon is roughly 3 miles away.

You've stretched out the z-axis in your image a lot.

Values are way too rough and edges are too sharp for a woman. Great effort though, keep it up and you'll be better. Drawing from a picture? Looks like you're copying values rather than setting them up properly, I recommend using Loomis with elements of Reilly method and learning how to see and map out your values. You can refer to Watts videos for this and you should look into master value comp studies. Good luck.

I started off with drawing cubes and spheres etc. Pokemon are mostly made up of really simple combinations of those shapes with exaggerated and therefore easy to see squash and stretch. They're a good way to transition from drawing simple shapes to putting those shapes together to form a character. Good for practicing gesture too since they're usually posed pretty dynamically and their simplified shapes often make gestures exaggerated and noticeable as well.

>>2736653
Well, the first thing to remember is that unlike engineering, Industrial Design is all about people and user experience, rather than efficiency. This being said, the keys to making cool, function-looking and thought-out design is contextual functionality.

A great example given to me was train stations.

Train stations in europe are like giant hangars, designed to keep heat in and snow out, this is because it's cold as fuck, and when it is hot, it's only hot for a couple weeks of a year.

Compare this to train stations in Australia, they are nearly completely open aired, with cover from rain. This is because it's nearly always hot, and in the northern half, it also rains nearly one in every three days.

So the practical application example for this could be two mechs.

A snow mech, and a jungle mech.

The snow mech needs wider feet to allow it to not crack ice sheets and fall into deep snow, it needs environmental protection for the user, to keep them warm, and it needs optics which can pierce a snowstorm. The joins would need grooves on all meeting faces, so that surface contact and ice build-up wouldnt seize the joints.

Now a jungle mech needs to be able to work in the rain, the mud, and the hot. So additional cooling systems would need to be added, environmental protection isnt nearly as important in this context, compared to the snow. The legs would need protection from mud, and it would need to be able to cope with long treks on uneven ground.

Keep in mind the fundamental difference between design and art.

Art is an expression of emotion.
Design is a systematic tool to solve problems.

This means when you DESIGN a gun for space, you look at the problems that space would create, and you solve those problems, and thats what dictates your design.

Finally, what makes convincing design is when you design for assembly. Draw some rough exploded views of how your design would actually be made.

I gotta agree with you man. Drawing Pokémon would actually be a very good exercise in simple form and shit even though I do hate the little fuckers. Look up a guy called Peter Stapleton on Youtube for rendering simple 3d-ish characters.

Yeah, pappa robinson is great.

I guess what they really drove home at my uni was to have confidence in your linework. In this vein, my personal sketching style is heavily influenced by people like Kim Jung Gi, Dave Rapoza, among a lot of other artists.

Just start simple, make the product as bare bones as you can, then start making complex design choices like ergonomics, aesthetics, materials and shit. You'll always see 3D artists starting with a sphere or cube and building off that basic shape, so follow that process, always comparing your design to how you want to solve those pain points (the contextual problems).

And USE REFERENCES AND RESEARCH, art books, google images, manufacturing cross sections and 3D models are all great.

You dont need to redesign a cars suspension system or how a revolver operates, that shit is tried and tested already, just use what you know works, and innovate on things you think you can do better.

Values are looking ok. You should try flipping it around a couple of times. Also try using harder brushes around the eyes, nose and lips. It's not that highlights are too intense, it's just that blacks aren't black enough. People are always afraid of pushing your darks, but honestly, it always looks better when the core shadow is actually looking dark.
