Okay I tried. I feel kind of embarrassed posting this to honest. I feel it's not really the best representation of my tastes and comes across really generic--I swear my tastes expand past this! But I just wanted to include people that have already had a large impact on my way of thinking or painting, so all the more obscure tastes of mine or things I explore each day are each individually not important enough to make it on here, even though added together they would be, if that makes sense.

I guess because people are compiling their greatest influences they assume people know who they are since it's someone they talk about and think about a lot, so there is a bit of a bias in terms of how familiar people "should" be of them.

It's also largely an exercise for oneself, and we just are sharing for fun.

Just ask for specific ones you want to know and the anons will probably answer.

I would link you some pages there that show things, but they fucked up the site now and lost a lot of the old images so it's kind of useless.

Maybe download Algenpfleger's archive of practice stuff he put on his DA. It shows the volume of work needed, and the type of practice, to get to a pro level: http://algenpfleger.deviantart.com/gallery/27635231/Tons-of-practice

I was surprised the OP wasn't transparent already considering it was a png. When I made mine I used the magic wand to delete all the white squares, then I put my images under and used the wand again to select the square(s) and use it as a mask so I could place the images under it and not have to erase any parts of the images and could just place them how I wanted.

Hm, a mix of things. Lack of self confidence, lack of productivity for parts of it when I was extra depressed, things being under NDA so can't show work stuff, the decision to try to not post studies online under my name, I fell out of the habit of posting things online etc.

Also at this point it's been so long since I posted on my tumblr that I feel anything I will post needs to be groundbreaking or something. I get anxiety posting publicly online too on places like artstation or fb. I've got some pieces in the upcoming Spectrum though so might do a little update with that as an excuse to self promote or something, I dunno. We'll see when I get my copy of the book how I feel. >>2731279
>It's the deadlines that makes me anxious
Yeah that can be very stressful. I usually procrastinate then have to cram to get it done in time. A couple years ago I had a really bad bout of depression though and I didn't even care about deadlines anymore and ended up flunking several jobs which wasn't good. I've been more responsible since then luckily.

Today my stress was through the roof because my rent was due and I had clients late on paying me so I didn't think I'd make it, but luckily I got paid by one tonight and was okay.

>I'm also angry at my low output rate
For me it fluctuates, so in times where I notice I am more productive I try to take advantage of it. As for times when my output is low, well it's become so regular over the last few years that I am pretty used to it and I no longer get angry or guilty like I used to. I just sort of accept it. Not sure if that is a promising thing for you as a place to reach or if it is scary, but yeah it's what I noticed.

Damn that sucks anon. Ever since I burned through my savings paying for rent and stuff I have been better at completing things because there's way more pressure to do work and get paid when I know if I don't I won't be able to have a roof over my head or food in my mouth.

It means that you're not trying hard enough to get better. Whenever you're having a negative thought, you just let it be there instead of reminding yourself that it's just your depression talking. From how you word your posts, it almost seems like you're actively trying to put yourself down in each sentence. "I'm not good enough, I'm irresponsible, I'm not productive, I am a piece of shit" etc. and not only does it seem like attention whoring and makes people uncomfortable, it also confirms your negative thoughts each time you do.

Being "positive" doesn't mean you should lie to yourself that everything is always dandy, but that things aren't as bad as you make them out to be, you need to think about it rationally.

I've had depression for years and it's only been getting better because I finally decided to get better. My life and environment didn't change much, if anything they got worse, but you have to change yourself. Tell yourself EACH time you talk or think badly about yourself that "this is my depression talking, it might not actually be true"

Good luck, friend.

-taste is taste, so if I like something I won't stop liking it because it's popular
-I liked many of these guys way before I came to /ic/
-some of them probably are on /ic/'s approved list because of me and how many times I mentioned them over the years here
-I do like KJG a lot, in fact I bought his books over 5 years ago before it was even easy to get them in the West and before there were any English sites you could get them form. He hasn't been a huge influence on me though he's not included.
-there's probably a half dozen of the ones on my list that I never see mentioned here, except maybe by me on rare occasions

That said you are right that it comes across pretty generic. I think my art too is rather generic as a result of it, but what are you going to do, eh?

In terms of textures I don't think Jeff did much in terms of physical texture, though I've never seen any of them in real life. I suppose you are talking of the painted textures? I like the hatching he does with the brush, and when he gets that drybrush look that pick up the canvas texture. Pic related is a pretty good example of this.

He's the most successful bodybuilder of all time and succeeded in a variety of other fields too. I like to make comparisons between different fields when talking about art, whether it be music or sports or something else. It makes the point about practice and skill development more obvious I think, and there are a billion parallels between different fields when looking at the people who are at the top and how they got there. Mastery is a universal thing.

I could just as easily I guess mention some artist too but the point might be lost a bit if you start thinking about their specific art and whether you like their style or not, or if you believe they had some talent you don't. Talking about something simpler and a bit removed from art like lifting weights makes the point clearer I think.

As a Canadian I feel obliged to mention that Alfred Casson was a part of a group of Canadian landscape painters called The Group of Seven. They're basically some of the only painters to have come out of this country so are highly regarded here. Look them up--some are really shitty, some are great. Most of them are pretty stylized. Yes it irks me how bad some images online are. If you are going to post a grainy jpg that is only 300 pixels wide and is colour cast completely wrong, why even bother?

Things are getting a lot better though, I don't know if you remember or not but if you go back in time not even that long ago there was a point where like literally the only site that had hi res images was Art Renewal. That's why they were able to change to that paid shit they do now to see the images, because they pretty much had a monopoly on it. Fortunately with Google Art and various museums uploading hi-res images of their collections we have a lot at our disposal, maybe it even is making us greedy and expecting it for every image.

So I've seen lots of the Group of Seven in real life as I mentioned. They have a decent amount in the National Gallery and a lot in the Art Gallery of Ontario. I don't remember seeing any in Montreal's Museum of Fine Art, but I haven't been there in a while, and I spent most of the time in the European collections last time I was there.

One thing you don't get in the images online is the scale or the texture of the works. Some of their studio pieces (depends on the artist though) were wall sized massive canvasses with the paint so thick it is creating crests like a half inch thick or more that stick off it. I have no idea how many tubes they used or how long they took to dry.

Their best work in my opinion are still the small oil sketches done plein air. Several of them would go together on camping trips into places like Algonquin Park or various parts of Quebec and stuff and then just bring a shitload of small wooden panels with them. They'd paint big landscapes as well as closeups of things like maybe the way the snow interacted with a root at the bottom of a tree trunk. Those little sketches are really extraordinary and have a great freshness to them that their studio work doesn't have.

>Do you guys look at a lot of art all the time?
I think a lot of us do. So we catch ourselves coming back to particular pieces or artists over time.
>I never seem to see something I feel like I want to aim for specifically, just aspects from all kinds of pieces
That's fine, so just put up tiles that represent those pieces. Remember, you can put anything in there, not just artists. You could put up an image that represents an aspect of what you like and write down the idea, instead of an artists name.
Look at your art and try to reverse engineer why it looks the way it looks. And think about what you spend a lot of time on other than watching or making art, chances are that it finds its way into your work somehow (music you listen to, other hobbies, people you look up to, books you read etc.).
Also you can chose for yourself how much you want it to be what already influenced you vs what you'd like to be influencing you.
>How do you narrow it down??
You don't have to make this in one day, maybe set up some images, come back to them and see how you feel about seeing them on the map, does it seem right?
Others have already written, they could make multiple of these and don't neccessarily think the one they made is perfectly accurate, so don't worry about that, you can treat is as just a sample, your influences and aspirations change over time anyways.

I could fill in around 10 of these. Mythology plays a huge part in terms of influence, too.

This turned into more of a 'Things I like' grid.
I feel like I'm influenced more by movies and life in general, than other artists.

Look up to them for a variety of different things from stylization, use of color, anatomy, creature and environment design and so on.

Are you all underage and/or American? I'm not even memeing, sincerely curious if the manchild taste is globalized or just the product of a comics consuming nation.

Tone it down with the buzzwords. I can assure you, if anyone were to see your work, not a single person would ever think you were influenced by Waterhouse. That's what this thread is about, posting your _influences_. Not posting the usual /ic/ approved fine art masters everyone knows about who have nothing whatsoever in common with your own work.

If your not doing it for money then you relate it to what you enjoy whilst learning. If people are interested in digital "animu and videogame" art, then let them do so
