Last thread: >>2710853

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun!

Fresh off the Mayflower? Then do yourself a flavor and check out /ic/s (new and cleaner) subordinate STICKY:

Feng Zhu: “"There is no secret to drawing. The more you do it, the better you'll get. It's all about mileage. A lot of people try to look for shortcuts, but there aren't any. Just bite the bullet and do the work. There is no easy path."

sketch then correct and redraw, start from there
there isn't a mandatory order, but if you do fundies one step at a time you'll learn basics faster

otherwise you will just try shortcuts to fake out how real world behaves

Also adding things in the background, midground to work a composition that really works up the eyes.

there are 2 dimensions
fundies quality and communication

a study can be interesting and it doesn't communicate shit, it's just an analysis trought drawing

understanding of fundies give interests on themselves
you're stuck with thinking 2d flat shapes, so when you start trying to nail forms you'll improve it

then there's subjective value of w/e you've done and how you've approached it, what makes it designed, memorable, visually stimultating or w/e

when you start trying to brainstorm before starting you'll improve it

>you never listen
you might get better results out of your critiques if you put a sightly more effort to be accurate, not asking you to be friendly, but accurate
and put an effort to understand what you're giving crit to, it's not a finished pic, it's a sketch with some parts of it way more loosely because It's for testing where to go

if you take implications about how far from finished a sketch is you're gonna make bad judgements by routine

there's no render or accurate drawing on logan, just like the thing at the bg which is meant to be a centinel's giant forearm-hand, but I don't need anything else than that blob to compose the pic, lighting and color quickly

>>2721432
i'm not posting early steps to get told about something without any form/render work is lacking form/render work, I know that
that step is supposed to come on top of it, and it's not there yet

I could understand a critique about how I failed to do that step, but otherwise it seems a missunderstanding

>>2721435

>>2721438
it's meant to do so, ground or bg hasn't been drawn, just filled with shapes to establish everything early, early steps shouldn't be final unless you don't plan to improve it or you plan to just 1:1 copy it

Here's something I finished the other day. I'm still trying to get a grasp on not-basic lighting.

>>2721359
This is cool. You should thicken/darken your lines in certain places though, like in places where two forms meet (for example, where the arms connect to the torso, where the thigh overlaps the calf, etc). Right now your lineweights are pretty inconsistent.

What are you looking for exactly?
The only thing I can say is that it isn't very clear what I'm looking at or what you're trying to portray so I guess that would be a start.
There's a point where something is so stylized that it's near impossible to critique, I understand that it's your preference but if people can't understand what they're supposed to be looking at to begin with, they usually won't have much to say about it.
I dunno if that helps, but good luck.

Also, chibi is not just slapping a an oversized head on a character, it's more like a figure with baby proportions - chubby, rounder and simplified joints, narrow shoulders.. and a big head, of course. Yours looks more like a Disneyland worker on his break.

rounder, softer shapes my man. like the other anon posted, 'cute' usually stems from baby-like proportions, so chubbier, shorter, thicker limbs often show up when you want something cute. you want to avoid all the straights and sharp angles you have in your drawing here.

also, consider the props to be another character in the drawing, too. you have a nicely drawn and detailed chair, but it doesn't really suit the subject matter, does it? try to simplify things as much as possible, and go for rounder, cleaner forms, no need spend so much time detailing the chair when the character is the main focus.

>> No.2725379

>>2725363
I actually liked the other one a bit more, the fact that you muted the colors so much makes it look much less lively, maybe its just because this way there's a bit less contrast. The hand looks a bit flat, even more so now, and I don't know how you could put the bow. Like if she carried it with the string behind her shoulder it could be hard to make it look like a bow, maybe simply mirroring it would work (the string on the other side). I think the problems with this painting all come from the fact that it looks like you simply started it without planning it, the girl's body doesn't look cohesive, and the bow placement looks so random also because of this. I'm not saying it's a bad idea or anything, I actually like the concept but maybe if you worked a bit more on sketching it before trying to make a finished work out of it. Sorry if I sounded harsh or anything, I always try to put things as nicely as I can

also while some of them may have more or less the same expression (tho none of them i'd describe with ^_^ seeing as that expression has the eyes closed) hating on the 3/4th angle is kinda idiotic, there's only so many angles you can draw the head in where the face still reads properly that unless they're very nearly looking straight forward or completely to the side it's considered some variation of a 3/4ths, whether from below, above or mid level (or, again, some variation between those)

also the thicker line foudn only on the left side of his hat and the left side of that bird-ish one looks super bad without any other darker/thicker lines placed elsewhere in the sketch to help counter balance them. either work out some other places where thicker lines would work/look good or go back and clean those ones up

work on silhouettes
make it so things read strong and clearly, both arms are lost forever to that silhouette, which isn't that much of a problem until you have the arms doing something (say holding some mystery stick), in which case things get all messy an murky an unclear
also, unless that dude's jus floatin, work on cementing your figure's weight. either have it flow into the ground or in the direction of movment

tho staring at it long enough i think i know what you were trying to do with the feet. having his right foot (our left) planted while his left was on the tip toe. the tiptoe leg has lost the form of the shin, causing it to look all jelly boned, remember the flow of the lower leg, it curves inward/back before it swooces right back out an forward again (in pic related flow is exagerated to show swooce)

Do you have to use a program with a stabilizer to get super polished art like this? I'm used to painting in photoshop, and I CANNOT get good line art. I don't know if my tablet just isn't configured properly or what. I can draw much cleaner on paper, but not with a tablet.

Photoshop's brush engine is shit for producing crisp lineart, just pirate Clip Studio for god's sake. The UI is largely the same to Photoshop and even many shortcuts are identical. Brush setting works a bit different but if you know your way around Photoshop it's a breeze to learn. You can also open and work with Photoshop files straight up in Clip Studio with all layers intact.

No, you're probably just clueless about line art. Photoshop is great for digital painting but for *crisp* lineart the brush engine just fails. Sure a handful of people can make nice linework with it, but there are people who can also make beautiful things in SketchUp, and that doesn't make it a good 3D program. what tablet do you use/how big is it?
what are the dimensions/ratio of the active area?
do said dimensions match with the screen that you draw on?
if if the ratio is off it can cause a subtle yet notable disparity between your hand eye coordination that can make inking/sketching frustrating
if this is the case you should be able to mess with your drivers to change where the tablet is overlaid on screen so that the ratios can more closely lineup
if you have a screen tablet then i unfortunately don't know what to tell you other than maybe try getting a screen protector with a better texture for drawing (usually matte is the way to go) or try some different nibs for your stylus

ooh, also, even if you don't want to use a stroke stabilizer, lazy nezumi fixes that weird bug in photoshop where pen strokes drawn while zoomed out are all stair steppy

it's helpful and easy to plan a drawing a bit before getting all detailed.
pic related I've tried to make an example, forgive the bad quality- when I see your linework, and consider that you draw without planning you could be able to create some great stuff.
maybe shaping random scribbled shapes into a concept of perspective environment before getting detailed on characters works for you?
