Sorry if this thread is unnecessary, but I feel that my biggest weakness is my poor ass anatomy. I am totally inept at drawing males and it's a huge embarrassing point.

Post reference pics, studies, videos, photos to study from, discuss the proper way to study anatomy, etc etc.

The best way to study anatomy is to get a couple books on it. Don't waste your time trying to piece together various images you find online and turn it into a complete education.

>> No.2692755

One should learn how to draw males first. After that females become pretty easy.

Also this book is super cool, it's a medical book and you don't need to read it, but maybe just look at the pics and read the related comment, there's some interesting stuff about the relationships between muscles, about posture, dynamics of movement, tensegrity. Basically the stuff artist draw.

Anatomy books are filled with images, and they're better than what you can find as single images floating online, plus it's organized and has supporting text. Other than perhaps a live teacher or recording of an anatomy class, it's the best thing.

Be careful of too much black & white simplified illustrations of material directed towards artists. Complement with medical resources. The medical term is gross anatomy.

Studying anatomy requires a careful mindset to manage the huge volume of information. Look for function and important connections (origins and insertions) before you copy form. When you start studying form, focus on proportions and relationships before shapes. Understanding the naming system will help you memorize the shapes as the Latin names often explain them (fossa = hollow for instance). Dissections can be particularly difficult to make sense of but they are important for understanding the arbitrary nature of dividing muscles into isolated groups, and how ligaments and fascia make up the subcutaneous to deep mass.

The proper way to study depends on your goals. You may be happy with extreme simplifications and color coded muscle profiles. Or you may have to study and depict each bone from various angles, it's connections, important muscle groups, their origins and insertions, slowly moving over each part of the body, then work out a system of simplification that is your own, and finally connect with surface form.

Once you start being able to identify muscles from the surface, you're making progress. Then it's just a matter of practicing depicting the forms from various angles and stages of movement and flexion. Never ever forget the skeleton as its the only really solid form we have to work with.

Lastly, there is no substitute for life drawing classes.

The values are bad because they don't describe the form at all and the reflected light is really overdone causing confusion to the viewer. The real issue though is the drawing itself is fucked up really badly when it comes to structure, which is what he's supposed to be teaching.

Regardless, the head is too deep, the ear is incorrectly places and the neck is all sorts of screwy. It's far from bad, but it's not "teacher" good.

Yeah, the face and the rest of the head don't line up. It's like his face is stretching over to the side to get a better look at something. The shadows make him look rashy. Then there's that bright spot to the left of his brow that makes it look like he has a dent.

Maybe this guy's just really deformed and we aren't being body positive enough.

>>2695352

Your values are a bit too strict. It lacks a good bit of dimension due to this.
