Last thread: >>2679286

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun!

Fresh off the Mayflower? Then do yourself a flavor and check out /ic/s unofficial subordinate STICKY:

It's readable so its hard to say what needs improving. You could do a lot more with the shadows but that might not be what you're going for.

Instead, look at artists like;

And think about how you can adapt their workflow to fit your own.

Really nice line control!

Legs are too compressed at the knee, even as a style choice. If your gastrocnemius + ankle is that thick, it's inexcusable for the knee to have this much compression. Her left ankle is basically thicker than her left knee lol

Your perspective under the waist is fucked. Even if her legs are apart, there's way too much foreshortening on one and not enough on the other.

Try working on the whole canvas and build everything up simultaneously rather than starting in one point and working out. Like maybe lay in some big flat shapes of the local colours for the demon, the flowers, the ground. Then start putting in shadows on everything, then working on the lights etc. Using big brushes then gradually using smaller ones as you progress. You'll find it goes quicker this way and everything will be more unified.

There's a technical name for this but I forget, it's pretty much dividing your canvas into panels, this way you have a clearer idea of the entire piece, allowing you to focus on smaller spaces and seeing the "flow" of your drawing before you even begin.

Your line quality is fantastic my friend, what's your secret/software, if you got any?

Only true criticism is that I would detail out your flowers/beer fuzz. It's simple cartoony design overall, but the levels on the flower and beer fuzz, specifically the fuzz just seems too simple and out of style. (like I can see the little bit of hue change in the beer but it's not a very convincing effect and hardly visible. Try shifting value and/or saturation aswell).

Yep, I do a grain pass at the end, don't enjoy the perfect flat digital look horribly much. You should really just forward her eyes/expression. It doesn't really read well since nothings going on, but It's not exactly an art problem, just seems like a weird choice (kinda looks like one of those stills from a VN). It almost seems like she's listening to something against a wall since her left ear is positioned higher than her right and her expression would kind of work with that act, but the body doesn't read that way.

It's no problem. Looking at your stuff I can see what you're saying. I would suggest practicing expression (maybe take one character and lay out an expression sheet, do it at different angles etc so you get an idea of what on the face exactly dictates a good expression). Body motion can also speak volumes but you can get alot from just the face.

Also just another suggestion looking through your gallery, but complete some pieces. Make something with a background etc and a bit more gestural and tell a bit of a story. I think you're suffering in your arts liveliness because you're not giving your characters anything to do.

Neat, I'm getting better at this (although that ones a bit more obvious than others).

Just want to get to the point of creating/duplicating some of the nice brushes I see my favorite artist use, probably the biggest one being whatever some artist use to make their tapered edged fur/hair details.

I think you're still in a weird position that doesn't grant the scale well. I meean it's not complete enough to tell but you should make the angle from a bridge or some place on ground or from an obvious humans perspective of the giant thing.

Like put more obvious ground level structures closer to the camera and maybe draw your loli farther back. When viewing something huge the most convincing perspective is from that of a human, and you're almost there but they're still not close enough angled to the ground.

This is hard to say since I've never really done something similar, going off of observation so I apologize. Image isn't the best but I couldn't find a super great example.

It's alright though, I hardly follow my own advice most of the time. Just try to go outside your boundary at some point or you'll get complacent. Backgrounds if I'm not solely painting a background are difficult for me so I do a lot of my stuff as characters in nothing. You won't get better at putting them in situations though unless you take that extra step. Taking chances and doing difficult things is better even if the end product may turn out shit a few times. Doing the opposite is how deviantart happens.

Function.

This can mean two things. One is to look at ancient or modern day armor and see how segments work. Make sure you don't end up with ridiculously cumbersome shoulderpads or parts that wouldn't allow any range of motion,

The second part is to think of the function of the armor within your settings. Is it for a space miner? An explorer? A SWAT police unit in a dystopian city? Whatever the function of your armor, find a way to convey this to your viewer. It makes for way more interesting pieces than "generic armored spessman".

You didn't properly fill out the black areas.
You weren't doing the oultines properly, often you can see where they overlap.
Don't put pressure on the paper with the pencil.

As for ink, pretty much everything is better than dip pens. There are special fountain pens for drawing and brush pens which both allow you to draw better.

Keep it simple and tailor your rendering to your lines. It's easier to block colors in as masses and get things working as a whole before adding noise and "rendering".

It could become a crutch but if you struggle with color just block in the local colors (what they'd be under white light) then add a multiply layer and use a slightly darker sky hue as your shadows. It'll help break things up into something more managable.

Hi. i'm currently working on this bastard. there's small local art competition going on.
It's nearly finished i think, but current frame ratio irritates me. ( 9 by 16 )
will it be better if i crop off some corals? or sky? I really wanted have oddly horizontal frame ratio but it isn't working.
I don't have much time left...

Hmm.. Maybe it's the musculature of the neck and body in conjuction with the head/facial features? Could be that I'm making the neck and shoulders too strong, so they compound the issues with the facial features and have her come off as man-ish.

When I study and work from reference (like pic related, just now), I feel like this issue isn't as apparent. Or maybe it is. Maybe I'm just not drawing enough regularly to be ready to stylize.

I think the lattis (lattisimus?) seems too big too strong.
Also the breasts are pretty tight so they look kinda well trained?
The pic you used as a reference has some slightly more heavier softer breasts.
They look like they really have weight. Im pretty much an amateur probably worse than you but thats what I would say as an observing human being

Basically what

>>2695301 said.

It's kind of a lack of weight on the boobs, they seem kinda strapped down/weightless. Also she's just overall a bit sharp on her face, like her upper lip. Maybe bring down the position of the eyes or squish the face as the eyes seems a bit like they may be resting on the curve of the top of the skull and not exactly in the sockets. I think her head is a bit off positing where it should normally belong on her neck.

Being the Style thread, I got some questions.

I need inspiration for cartoon styles. Do you guys know of any other artists who do anthropomorphic animals really well aside from Warner/Disney? Particularly ducks. That bill is really tricky.

Watch your face + hairline on rightmost girl, they don't seem to be comforming to the shape of the head.

Left girl's hairline has a lesser version of the problem, where the hairline seems pulled too far back on the side (shouldn't go behind the ear). Her neck is way too thin.

You've done a good job at making the poses flow well, though.

Your character seems to be backlit from an angle where the building would block the light source. The only way she can receive this light is if it comes from slightly under her, in which case there could be cast shadows on the bottom plane of the building. Seeing a daylight picture with a sky/horizon and white light, though, the immediate association is to assume this light comes from the sun.
