Last thread: >>2671401

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun!

I like it a lot, but it seems like you don't know how to draw legs very good. I'm not the greatest at anatomy myself but I believe you should at least try to give the form of legs a try. It would be a shame especially after working so hard on the top half, to lazily treat the lower half like you did.

>> No.2679555

Forgive me, but is that a female of a feminine male? It looks good it's just I can't tell without context. Its face looks masculine because of the length of the snout and chin hair and is flat chested, while having long lashes, typically feminine clothing and gestures. With this in mind I might be better understand what you're going for.

I see. I guess it was my personal taste I suppose. Hard to help if you don't show what you consider a clean lineart. Don't forget to take your time.

If you're not good enough to do a lineart on the same level as the ones in this game you're just not good enough yet. Not an insult, just means you'll need to train and draw more, this a pro work after all.

But anyway avoid vector, it doesn't really works for Anime characters to me, looks too artificial.

Are talking about how to draw clothes and armor or clothes and armor design

>> No.2679710

>>2679693

Either. I'm not super great with drapery and folds. I mean I can kind of get the idea if I can think of what I want a material to be but it's not super familiar to me. Also kind of what makes certain armor/clothing interesting in design. I see tons of simple designs that catch the eye incredibly well.

(How to draw manga: giant robots)
Here is is how you draw clothes:
> warosu.org/ic/thread/S2597503#p2599841

If you are searching for designs, that is a though one because most people just has some folder with references on it. Try browsing other boards and pages like pinterest and save your favorite pics as references.
But if you want to know mine:
For medieval armor: Manga berserk
For fashion: I actually have porn references since people draw stockings and other fashion really detailed. For fantasy medieval design, I have no fucking idea. browse /tg/ or something.

There's ideas in certain designs and you can really mix and match when it gets down to it. To outright use an armor design isn't exactly okay past homage but I mean it can help you ascertain elements of the armor or whatever you may be referencing.

I'd like to see the reference photo you used, if so. but in any case, here's a redline. you need to study the skull. you need to draw from life before you go off on your own. the eyes do not typically go that high up in the face area. I tried replicating a copy of your model but you can see that your facial elements are a notch higher up than whats considered a regular face. also, hair has volume, so the forehead looks even smaller. dont add value before you know the complete structure of the head and how it is shown in different angles.

in short, read some loomis, and head over to the beginner's thread.

How much reference is too much when doing gestures or poses? Like if I take the angle and gesture and redraw it myself with whatever character etc is that exactly fair? Not the person who's critiquing you but I would say your pose is bad and the gesture/lean etc just doesn't really work at all, plus there's just things like perspective issues and weird anatomy (like her stomach trying to just leave the building). Not him, and I'm not saying to back to /beq/, but you should maybe scrap it and move on/redo it? Maybe work on anatomy/gesture specifically.

Here you go.

Your line work is good but you could use some work on line weight. Everything above the upper torso looks good. The hands are in good perspective. Everything below the waist though needs more form and shape. The right leg was kind of floating in the air, I don't know if that was your intention but it looked a bit awkward. I think this redline might make the pose more pleasing to the eye, although you can modify it as you wish.

good visual story tellin skills, good colors, good comps, more or less all you need to make a good comic (visually speakin). whether or not people like your style or think it's original or pandering or ugly doesn't matter, that's just their tastes verses yours, as long as you like it that's all that matters. changing your style for no reason other than "critical" approval is just a different kind of hollow (which isn't to say disregard all feedback, just if someone's "critique" amounts to little more than "i personally find this style ugly and trite" like what the fuck ever)

I'm the second post you quoted, so no. I'm just harking on the artstyle as it's ugly (which truly at the end of the day is my opinion). It is the alternate style thread, but I'm not going to just say it's good. I'de much rather people shit on my style/art and tell me what's wrong or why they dislike it.

To give a bit better critique, I actually don't dislike the way the females are done, but the different colored male noses/overall roundness of the, I'm guessing adult, males looks jarring.

The flounder mouth on the one guy looks bad, even from a style perspective. Like his expression/emotion would read better if his mouth was actually in place or not even there.

The guy going up the stairs has incredibly short legs (unless the stairs are sunk into the ground of the railing.

Again though I guess it's all "style" at the end of the day, do whatever you want and makes you happy. I'm simply giving feedback.

I actually disagree with those anons. I like the way it's proportioned, the way is stylized. I'm pretty sure it's pretty subjective (a la beautiful joe) but I do really like it and would be a shame if you trashed it.
But from an objective standpoint, the arms and hands aren't proportioned to head and body. Still love your style tho.

Aqua man does look kind of boring. Do what artists in comics tend to do to look more interesting: make it dynamic, make it like an unusual shot from a movie, apply some distorted perspective.

You don't draw big muscle lolis you just draw small cities. Theres no sense of scale with your work, you just miniaturize the background while drawing figures from the same perspective, as if the viewer is observing the subject from a distance.

Granted, this might be because they're the focus in some weird erotic sense; where you want to focus on their body, but still, pushing the perspective would make your work more interesting.

Yeah, probs gonna redo the Aquaman all-together. It's a request from my brother. I'll think of something cool. I think a major part that takes away from the Aquaman is the boring perspective/composition. I might angle the camera up a little more, and make his figure take up more of the shot. Back to the drawing-board really.

And looking at the thread on here where people were shitting on Kr0n, I actually got some ideas for how to stylize/color the Tifa one. I'm actually quite excited to get working on that one, since I can envision the finished product already.

Gesture drawing will help a ton
Get some big newsprint and a far pencil or some charcoal, load up a bunch of pictures of naked people and draw 6 different people for 2 minutes each, then 3 different drawings at 15 minutes, maybe a couple at 30 minutes and eventually you'll work up to an hour long drawing. Combine this with filling the whole paper with the figure and doing these exercises will train you to think differently about the body over time

there are some pretty obvious mistakes, you've not measured a lot of things

overal shapes are not too far away, but proportions are missplaced and legs/arms end like she's going hollow

better if you avoid shading like that

deform tool / liquify might help you correct your mistakes faster

Make sure you structure things properly when you draw a face. I see quite a few errors in regard to symmetry with this face.

Did you draw this from reference, or imagination?

I recommend drilling a ton of little head construction as well as the different planes of the face in order to get it right. Make sure you work with boxes and properly separate the different planes of the head. See my pic.

Also, watch this video,it should help you. Draw tons of heads using this technique once you've got it down pat.

I would also recommend using 3D modeling sorftware like Zbrush and playing around with it. It'll help you properly assimilate the different planes of the head.it helped me at least.

No shame in using ref man.

Imo, what I would do is, watch the video I posted, and follow his techinique. I think it's a fairly good technique for starting out with face construction. Once you've learned it, practice doing faces from the front from imagination, changing features and styles, etc... I say, a good 20 faces.

Then, once you've got that, use all you've learned, and do a good 10 heads using reference, and play close attention to the various planes and features of each head/face.

I'll add two more things. The first is to study "resting" expressions in anime illustrations - when your character isn't doing anything in particular besides posing. There are still design choices in how to draw elements of the face there - the tilt of the head, opening of the eyes, direction of the irises/pupils (what are they looking at?), position of the eyebrows, shape/expression of the mouth, so on. Right now, it's not too clear what expression your character is making; she looks lovestruck/a bit dazed and is staring at nothing in particular while flashing a really wide smile. If this is what you were going for, you've nailed it, but if you were intending to convey something a bit more neutral, reducing the size of the mouth and adding a bit of cross-eye in the pupils (so she doesn't have a dead-eyed stare) would be beneficial. Also, design-wise, be aware that the highlights all over the irises bring her into "creepy-cute" territory a lot more than any other element she has (which are all relatively tame monster girl stuff, by comparison. Love the hair btw.)

The second thing is some general perspective stuff. If she's kneeling down, the bottom of her knees will line up with the front of their horizontal perspective plane. This isn't the case here, as you can see their alignment isn't parallel with some other evident lines of the torso's front plane, such as the waist/belt and boobs.

>> No.2687528

>>2687100
You got away for cheap with those shoulders, man.

That's actually not a bad render, especially for that style and level of detail. Colors are super tame, basically monochromatic but consequently unified. You added a clearer separation line at the ear so I'm happy.

The main problem is with your cast shadows. First, you've got a cast shadow hitting both sides of the nose (dunno how that even happened). Pick one side (in this case, her left side), and get rid of the shadow on the other end, cause I'm assuming your portrait's not being lit by two light sources.

The cast shadow that falls on her right cheek also looks like it doesn't belong. It very brutally dips towards her chin. What's casting it? Even if you had a hat with a rim, I don't think you'd have a shadow with such an abrupt change of curvature (just look at pictures of people wearing hats and take note of the form the cast shadow makes under most lighting conditions). However, since she's just wearing a beret here and your portrait is being lit from a fairly tame rembrandt angle, there won't be big cast shadows to speak of (just the one from the hair).

I think you should work on the skin a bit more, slight [anime] anatomy issues, lack of contrast and muscle rendering issues make her look very flat.

Take into account that accurately placing her in the environment is a much bigger priority when working with such open landscapes.

And this isn't an isolated case, this happens to a lot of artists, when you're drawing cities your brain runs on technicalities, switching back to an organic being isn't easy, if you google "anime girl city" and find the ones that aren't made by an animation studio you'll see what I mean.

Dunno if I'm talking out of my ass but that's the way I see it...
