Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email lava@lavaflake.com.

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

You mean decide on what to value yourself as? You have to have a careful look at what prices people who are in a similar skill range charge, and that's pretty much up to you. Then, take into account stuff like how long you take to do a piece, your popularity and demand, and if you want to have temporary lower prices to increase the amount of people who can actually afford you.

Although when starting out, you have to whore yourself out for commissions, offer specials, discounts, requests, freaking anything to get exposure, so that hopefully you'll get a popular or well known person to get something for free, link to you, and then hopefully someone with money comes along and offers to commission you.

You can't wait for people to accidentally find you through your occasional posts, you have to market yourself. The great thing about the furry community, is that there are places where you can buy an advert banner slot for about $25 a month, which gets about 3000 page views over a month if it's an averagely attractive banner. commissioners almost always post art you do for them, and it will more or less always be with a link back to you. Do something attractive, and when someone favorites your post, it shows that picture on their profile which links back to you. There are stupid amounts of forums around furry stuff, and if you do one raffle there, you can get a load of attention and someone might buy something. PLUS, you also have lots of sites that repost your art (like e621, reddit, etc), which have moderators that ensure pieces have the correct artists tagged with a link back to them. be active in the community you want to sell to.

On FA, when you post something it will always go to the front page for a bit so you always have a chance to catch the eye of someone, so it's great for putting up YCH adverts or pieces with your commission info or details on a special.

I added a post I saw somewhere ages ago, I've always kept it's advice in mind.

I would love to find something that would sort of serve as a hampton like book for the construction and inner workings of vehicles, like an anatomy book for mechanical design if that makes sense.. I feel like whenever I try and draw vehicles Im always just bullshitting my through until I think it looks right and thats definitely not the way to do it. Like for example maybe something that would start with different joint types, how they move connect, then moves on to the very basic exoskeleton of a car etc. its hard to describe cause you dont know what you dont know right?

scott robertson doesn't go into every detail of a cars but his method makes it really simple to design vehicles. Once you learn how to design in 2d and build form on top of it, it should be easy to draw vehicles/observe stuff in more detail.

Have you checked out any Scott Robertson books? I believe he has one on vehicles.

Cars are a bit of a different beast than people. People all have the same basic skeleton, whereas the body of cars is very different. Just look at an old muscle car vs a modern hybrid. I think for any thing you have trouble drawing from, your best bet is life drawing to build up your visual library.

I was just using cars as an example, I guess Im looking for something to supplement life drawing since I dont exactly have access to the inner workings of plane persay, and even from photos its super overwhelming and I dont actually understand what any of the things DO, thats why I was trying to compare it to hampton, actually understanding the legitimate functions of things helps me a lot. Ive watched a lot of his stuff before and its a bit of a step up from what im looking for, hes more about about the design and inventive portion, filling your visual library so that you can draw cooler and more inventive vehicles and what not. I want something thats the straight up fundamentals, understanding the framework, what needs to be there for a vehicle to actually function in the real world etc. Teaching the rules that I have to work with or bend while designing. All the vehicles scott robertson designs have that kind of underlying knowledge in them because he actually has to design things that really work in the real world, and every know and again hell drop a little snippet of "yea you gotta make sure youre thinking about this because in the real world bikes need some kind of support beam here etc" but its nothing comprehensive

Have you ever looked at a car manual? Because ever single one ive gotten my hands on were basically useless from a more visual/artistic perspective, though I did learn a lot about the components and structure of car engines from this one youtube channel targeted towards engineers. you are really over complicating this. You don't need to know every single little detail to draw a car. You just need to know about the broad forms and then build up a visual library through references to invent some details. The way Scott Robertson teaches it is to draw the wheels and then build the body on top of it. All you need to draw is the basic stuff like the hood, grill, windshield, etc. Learning about all the different types of engines or what a specific part looks like wont be useful to you 9 times out of 10.

I dont think you understand my goals here. I dont want to know every single screw and pipe, I want to be able to think about the actual functions of the things i am drawing and not just blindly bullshit my way through it. To be able to draw a type of motorcycle or whatever that someone could look at and feasibly actually create because I took the time to figure how the steering mechanism would work and has real structural integrity. I want to be able to design say a striped down version of that vehicle showing how the wheels connect, and how the engine is held. Again, its hard to describe what I want to know, because I dont know what I want to know because I dont know anything about these things. One could say that you dont actually need to know any actual muscles besides a few key landmark ones that anyone paying attention in their high school anatomy class could name to do successful figure drawing, and that is very true, but there is also still a benefit in going deeper.

The new LAS site is simply a hobby project I've taken upon myself to make after Lava stopped (seemingly) having an interest in keeping LAS going or to keep up development.

It's just an alternative that I'll be putting up, simply because I can without too much trouble. If there's no interest and it ends up being a negative on LAS I can simply take it away - I have no interest and feel no pressure to publish or force it, if it's unwanted. We'll simply have to see what happens. Personally I have no idea whether people want to switch over or stick to the original LAS. I was on the fence about talking about it at all and making it available in the first place, because it feels like a forced and an unwanted change nobody asked for.
