Anecdotal, though

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/health/news/11530863/iPad-neck-Huge-rise-in-back-and-neck-pain-among-youth.html

>The number of young people seeking help for back or neck pain has risen 60 per cent in the past year, driven by sedentary lifestyles and the use of technology

http://comicsalliance.com/artists-drawing-injuries/

>Being a comic book artist is a physically taxing job. Long hours sitting at the literal drawing board (whether drawing on paper or digitally) can strain muscles in the back, neck, and shoulders; repetitive motions inflame tendons in the arms. Combine this demanding work with the life of a freelancer, which, in the United States, does not come with any form of health care, and you’ll realize that many comics artists are living one injury away from economic disaster. An injury will not only cost money to treat, it will also cost time as it heals — time that could be spent drawing — resulting in lost income.

>This is a reality I’ve heard from many comics artists of my acquaintance: Drawing hurts. From general soreness to serious repetitive stress injuries that cause permanent damage, pain always eventually accompanies art.

>“Chronic muscle pains, knots, tightness, in my back, shoulders, chest and neck.” This is the catalog of pains related by Jamie McKelvie that he attributes to drawing professionally. “For years my set-up was bad and my posture poor, and drawing comics require very long hours, so even though I’ve been taking measures to address it, it’s a very slow process to try to free myself from pain.”

Yes I do, that's why I used the term "anecdotal".

So are you saying that tennis elbow or neck pain are not caused or exacerbated by hunching over your work surface like Quasimodo or reaching out like Stretch Armstrong in order to maintain an elevated arm position for an extended period of time? Or are you telling me to go look for a peer-reviewed scientific study relating to the use of a very specific niche electronic device that likely doesn't exist because what is known based on similar, more ubiquitous devices isn't enough for you my, family man?

http://blog.loish.net/post/80923191247/struggling-with-an-injury-story-and-advice

>The diagnosis is tennis elbow. This means that the tendons connecting my forearm muscles to my elbow are inflamed. The odd thing about this is that it doesn’t necessarily have to result in elbow pain. Because of how important this tendon is to all of your forearm, wrist and finger movements, the symptoms spread over the arm. My primary symptoms have been sore forearm and upper arm muscles, a tightness in my elbow muscles that creates a dull ache, and weakness (to the point where holding a tablet pen was causing my entire arm to shake). I’ve been lucky to have struggled mostly with a frustrating, annoying soreness, rather than actual pain as such. But something is definitely wrong.

You can use water but you need to keep it to a minimum (always have more paint than water). Or you can buy mediums or additives that will thin your paint. Also keep your brushes in mind, you're not going to be moving thick paint very well with a really soft brush.

If you have decent quality paints you should use them rather than spend loads of money on oils when you don't know how to paint. Learning on acrylics or gouache before you move on to oil will be a much cheaper investment.

Make social media accounts. Facebook, twitter, instagram etc. Everything.

Be cautious of what's trending and make art about it. Pokemongo is trending? Make some fan art. Spread it around.

Reblog other artists and try to make connections. Be friendly.

Biggest point is also to stay unique. Try and see what you can do that most people hasn't seen yet.

It kind of depends on what you're going for really, I couldn't tell you the specifics without knowing. Although, since you mention Blizzard, a gaming company, you could probably hit up indie studios or non-AAA studios. Generally, you find their website and cater yourself to them so they understand that you're a strong asset they need. Once you get on their team, make sure to do extremely good work and just basically bust your ass off for them since the only real network I know is by word of mouth. If they talk to other people and it spreads, you'll find yourself in good hands eventually. If you don't want to do in-studio work and like mean freelance, it's a bit more difficult since you lack the trust, but it's somewhat the same in that you just need to get noticed, not by fans, but by the employers. They're always checking blogs so, make sure to have high quality work on display at all times. I imagine you could go to a hiring agency or a producer that could help hook you up with a starting job, I don't know how that works out, but I've heard other people do it before.

In my college we had open studio hours that let anyone enrolled in an art class come in and use the space which I often took advantage of even though I wasn't an art major. This was not really strictly enforced and usually the TAs who unlocked the room would let us stay as long as we liked so long as we tidied up after ourselves and locked the door when we left. Also they never really checked to see if everyone there was enrolled in a course, so I would be free to invite non-artist friends to see/hang out. As long as you don't cause any problems, steal, or leave the place a mess they were fairly easy-going about the whole thing.

So say I wanted to take a photo and convert it to show only "Pure black, a 5 value midtone, and pure white." I could do that. I don't remember how or if I'm just imagining it weirdly.

I know that just killing saturation and upping contrast can get you to a black vs white but I could've sworn there was a way to do it with more values in between.

If you're just trying to get a color palette out of an image, there are a lot of ways to do that. You can save for web > gif, lower the number of colors until you get a simplified enough palette, then manually delete the ones you don't want from the color table. You can also resize an image way down using nearest neighbour sampling, then scale it back up.
Or you can use any of the near-infinite apps out there.

It's more for trying to get a feel for values and composition, I find it interesting to look at works done by competent artists and see the value structure, and how much you can break it down and still have it be recognizable. I'm also reading Framed Ink to try and learn composition right now, and a lot of his work is very graphic in a sort of 3 or 4 value style, so I'm trying to learn to get a similar effect.

It's a shame that lots of pictures of works by masters online have the contrast blown out, which sort of makes it less effective.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I'll shoot.

My dad's an engineer and draftsman, and in his 60's. He uses AutoCAD but what he doesn't like about it and other CAD programs for 2D drafting I guess is that it's all click and drag, manually inserting lines and shapes.

He asked me if a drafting program exists where with a tablet he can freely draw his designs on a grid, rather than set points for the program to draw for him. Like, rather than telling AutoCAD, "Hey, there's the dimensions of the circle I want drawn, make it," he can just draw the circle himself and set the scale of it.

Now, I know nothing about this stuff. I don't really know what I'm talking about, but if there's anyone here that might know a bit about this stuff, I may as well ask. Is there software like that that exists?

It's been a long time since I've touched AutoCAD, but I remember that problem. As I recall you can draw lines and geometric primitives and have them snap to a grid in just about any drafting program or vector graphics program. I did all my college CAD homework in QCAD, which is free and more intuitive than AutoCAD to work with. It's strictly 2D and the interface is practically MSPaint compared to AutoCAD. It's nowhere near as powerful, but I found it easy enough to use coming from traditional. If he's not looking to do exact drafting work, Autodesk Sketchbook Pro is a raster graphics program that does a great job of emulating traditional drawing tools with an intuitive UI.

Im trying to remember a method i read about where the artist did an underpainting by doing different values separately and bashing them together, giving it a sort of a look like the attached. (Soft porcelain-ish?). They did it digitally.

>like if my vizualization in my head is good enough can i skip drawing eveything put in bits and peices?

Once you're a good artist, yes, you can oftentimes skip construction, because you've done it enough that it's intuitive and you can basically visualize the basic shapes without actually drawing them in.
Until then, do construction. Plenty of shit artist are full of good ideas, the craft is putting it on paper, and that takes a fuckton of practice. Skipping crucial steps to learn how to draw (construction from basic shapes among them) because you think "oh but I know EXACTLY how I want it to look!" will fail 99 times out of 100. You might think it's a waste of time, but unless you're a prodigy you'll waste less time learning to do it right than you will by doing it wrong for ages and trying to brute force it.

In either case though, try it your way. You'll see the results, and if you like those results do your thing. If you don't like your results, do what almost all art teachers recommend and learn your basics.

No, the fundamental knowledge transcends whether you're looking at your computer monitor, a piece of paper or a screened tablet.

Transitioning from one to the other will take a bit of adjustment in hand-eye coordination - and at least in my experience you'll always have a bit more precision with paper/screened tablet - but that's all. So basically the only fundamental skill that'd be impacted by the transition would be line control, and that adjustment is usually not that bad. What happened was my original pen got "misaligned" or something and the tip kept retracting into the body. I looked it up and apparently I had to open it up and jostle some things around. So I opened it very, very carefully, making sure not to lose any springs.

Holy fuck help me. I lobbed the old pen as far as I could without littering and the new pen still didn't register at first. I went into settings and removed the old pen's preferences from registered tools. That didn't seem to help.

Then I unplugged and plugged back in my tablet. Hey! The new pen works all of a sudden! Except it doesn't show up in the tools settings/preferences menu so I couldn't seem to change how it functions. Great. Then after I try to access the display settings I get a "driver not detected" message of some kind. Then I get a similar message for the tool options. Also my tablet's buttons stopped working so I couldn't try to access options through that anymore. The thing's lights were still on and my computer recognized it was functioning so it's not like it wasn't plugged in properly. I don't even know what changed.

So at this point I decided I'd reinstall the drivers. So I did. It asked me to restart my computer. So I did. Now I can access settings and everything like that once again, except my new pen doesn't register at all. Do I need to register it under tool preferences or something? I can't add any new tools like I can with program preferences.

Oh, and for one second, I forget exactly when it happened, the pen was working perfectly. Then it stopped. Like it never even happened.

I'm at my wits end. Please tell me there's some kind of guide buried deep in the internet on using a replacement pen with a tablet. I don't mean to be dramatic, but a helpful response could save someone some property damage.

I bought a classic pen to use with an Intuos pro, it worked instantly and was auto-registered in that list. I didn't have to do anything

What was the model number on that pen? Mine is LP190k and it from what I can gather it doesn't explicitly state compatibility with an Intuos "Pro" but bear in mind that during my finicking trying to get the settings right, it DID work. Is it possible that was a fluke and that it might be able to pick it up to some degree, but not be "fully" compatible?

Either way I have a fancier, explicitly Intuos Pro compatible pen coming in a few days. This cheaper one arrived a lot earlier and was going to be my "reliable backup", but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

Just talked with a certain owner of a Los Angeles portfolio school. Obscene pricing aside, I managed to squeeze out some information about applying to calarts.

A couple things, mainly that if you are applying for their char animation program, they will not be interested in seeing super-rendered pieces. They want flowy, expressive shit. I managed to see some examples from the portfolio school owner's students and they are indeed far from finished, no tone, just mostly linework and construction.

2. Their sketchbooks need a lot of color. This was something I already knew.

3. There is no longer a job market for 2d animation. This sounded like a primary reason for her no longer specializing in preparing students for calarts application, moreso RISD and whatnot. She urged me to do some 2d animating on my own before committing to calarts, which is all sound, but I have to ask some people here:

How valid are her points, mainly the last one?

>> No.2678395

>>2678112
Wait, so you're saying that you want to apply to calarts to learn about 2d character animation?

>She urged me to do some 2d animating on my own before committing to calarts
To me it sounds like she asked you to do that, so you would know what animating is about. I agree with her; if you've never animated before, then you don't have any business going to an animation school. You're probably not passionate enough to make it.

Besides art schools are really expensive and it would be a shame if you realized that making animations simply isn't for you.

And, as you probably know, all animating principles (like squeeze and stretch) can be applied to any medium: it doesn't matter if you're working in 2d, 3d or with puppets. Because of that making 2d animations would give you a nice way to prepare yourself before going to school. And, when done well, you could include them in your portfolio.

>There is no longer a job market for 2d animation
True. Nowadays almost all 2d animation is outsourced and produced in Japan. Often only storyboards are produced right here. It's simply cheaper that way. Because of those storyboards they require you to learn about composition, color theory, gesture.

i'm having trouble getting the chapter on light in keys to drawing (the sticky even suggests learning form before value in the big picture)

should i put keys to drawing on hold and get into robertson's "how to render"? or should i just power through this intro and get to value as a fundamental to practice later on?

also--

what's the general order of shadow values? from darkest to lightest i have:
occlusion, core, form shadow (no reflected light), form shadow (with reflected light), cast shadow, and then half tones, center light, highlight

and how should i fill these in? softly outline, then separate light and shadow with halftone and then just add layers of graphite/charcoal over the areas that look darker?

I tried asking this in /gd/ but it was probably the wrong place. GD doesn't really deal with this sort of thing I guess.

How do you guys deal with people stealing/editing your shit and posting it on other places?

I'm not trying to act like I'm famous or anything, or even well lauded, I just have a lot of people stealing my shit and fucking it up.

I make wallpapers and other shit like that, and I always find people making shitty edits and variants without my permission.
I have the proper copyright information and such on my page, and I specifically forbid any alterations or other edits without my knowledge. I'm not trying to be an asshole about it, I just want my work to be consistent and not have 100 versions that others have made floating about. It looks bad on me if the shit looks terrible.

I've tried telling them what they've done wrong, and not to do the shit again, but I don't really have the heart to tell them to take it down. Not in public anyway (I don't want to ruin my reputation).

Most of the time people find the shit from a quick google search and that's it. They don't even bother looking for the source to see if this kind of shit is legal. I don't want to resort to using watermarks, because it messes up a good wallpaper.

>> No.2680885

>>2680849
Multiple monitors - yes, it is useful, but you also need to find space on your desk and set up your computer for multiple monitors, which can be a pain in the ass if your software can't deal with it or you can't do it yourself.

Not much clue about IPS, I have one and it was worth it, but I can't compare it to a good TFT. It certainly beats cheap TFTs.

IPS in itself won't help with eye strain, but getting a flicker-free monitor will, especially one with a low blue light mode. But yeah, a good quality display is absolutely worth it.

>>2680885
IPS displays ARE TFT. LCD displays have been TFT for a very long time. You're most likely thinking of TN panels, which even in the best 6-bit + FRC monitors are still unsuitable to color sensitive work.

>>2680973
They will give you better viewing angles at the cost of minor distortion, provided you're using a very large ultrawide and sitting dead center, really close to it. But desu the curve on most monitors is sublte enough you're not likely to see a difference unless you compare it to something else. Don't bother, especially for drawing.

Visual library is all well and good, but I wouldn't count on it ever being good enough that you can pull whatever object you want from imagination.

For imagination drawing, the priority should be to be able to "turn stuff over" in your head. You should be able to look at a reference and draw it from another angle / in different lighting conditions / with modifications etc. Don't fall for the /ic/ meme that reference is bad, it's only a crutch if you have to copy references instead of working with them. It's perfectly adequate to do a rough version of what you want to depict, then find a ref and refine it.

The internet is your visual library, anonymous. If you do certain subject matters a lot, memorize those particular ones. I draw lots of knights so I've gotten the hang of the way armor fits together even without refs, but that was a product of me finding lots of knight refs and drawing them.

you can build sliders in duik too, so you wont have to custom edit everything every time..i do believe this game took 6 years to make though, so it is a slow process too..but so is art, so i am sure it's no big deal..keep at it and you can do it anon

I dont know any books on the subject but here are some PROTIPS:

+Draw people you find cute, beautiful, ugly and learn the themes that make them so.
+Cuteness has a simplicity to it.
+Beauty in the human brain requires some "impurity" like a "beauty mark". That one thing you would fix is the the one thing making them stick in your mind as beautiful.
+Uglyness is often if not always symmetry related: bug-eyes arent necessarily ugly, as long as there are two of them.

So my suggested staring points:
Cute = simple (maybe childlike), symmetrical
Beautiful = symmetrical with on small thing to break the symmetry
Ugly = unsymmetrical

drawabox is simply a regurgitation of peter hans dynamic sketching. drawabox pretty much rips the assignments straight out too. so ask yourself then would you rather learn from uncomfortable or peter han who has been a profession for years

if youre drawing from reference you need to learn to measure by comparison. isolate pieces of the drawing and look where they lie in comparison to everything else. constantly check to see if things are correct. for example, if youre drawing a portrait look at the eyes, where do the other features lie in relation to the eyes? what about the mouth? the nose? the curvature of the chin? etc etc

you will get past the feeling, nothing lasts forever. even if it seems like the place youre in is impossible to escape, you need to understand that change takes time, and that you have to keep living, things will get better. weather you believe me or not.

I'm went and bought some dip pens on a whim, having little experience in using them. I used to own an Ohto Rook and used a few Speedball nibs my professor had.

I only bought two, and I'm having the same problem with both. I'm used to drawing my contours in a 'pushing' manner (picrelated, making a line in that direction while keeping the same hand position), but it's causing the tines to flick and bend and splatter (I think I already broke a nib doing so, since it doesn't hold ink for too long). Is there like some kind of technique for this, or am I not supposed to be doing that?

Secondly, are these supposed to feel like they're scratching/stabbing the paper? I really don't like how it feels at all and feels a little unnatural.

Can I just wing proportion? I feel like all these measuring stuff feels weird to me. It's way too rigid and I'm not sure how to measure poses in perspective or foreshortened.

You can if you have the eye for proportion. If you don't, do the tedious measuring stuff and then you'll be able to eye it when you're at a higher level.

From my experience nib pens are meant for confident deliberate strokes. If you try to use it the same way you would use a pencil or ballpoint pen your going to have a bad time.

Treat it like a wet cloth cleaning up a spill on a counter or floor. Dab the paper with it, since it's meant to pick up loose bits like graphite and charcoal.

If you want it to keep erasing, you're going to have to knead it often. Otherwise it's going to spread the same bits it picked up (which you can do cool things with).

It's not terribly hard, you just have to get behind the idea that it's not meant to completely erase in one go.

how light hits form for digital painting

Seems to be the fastest and most up to date method. Color theory itself is a mixed bag and you will encounter it while learning digital painting.

That's really helpful, I tried using it as a standard eraser and it looked like it didn't work.
Thanks!

Are there any tips on color schemes in character design? How do females even consider colors for their make-up? Is this actually a valid study object or they do this rather instinctively?

The first problem is more suited for /v/, but I think that starting an entirely new thread for these questions are a little unecessary.

I'm drawing this man. One problem: I have no idea what he's wearing in pic related.
If it's a necklace, then it really is the most strangest necklace I have ever seen on a character. The only other theory I have is the filename.

My second issue regards values. I'm terrible with colours, so all my drawings are in black/grey.
This character has sleep-deprived bags under his eyes, and it feels hard to convey this with a B pencil without making it look as if I'm /just/ going to town with the shading underneath the eyes. Does anyone have some sort of guide or reference for this specific problem? Or will people understand that the large dark areas that stretch beyond the eyes are actually from sleep deprivation; am I fretting over nothing?

Didn't find them useful, because they are way too inflexible. You are better of keeping track how you advance in what area and adjust what you learn.

But you can decide how you should allocate time between what kinds of drawings:

1. do thumbnails and sketches and studies for fun, that works every day and can be done anytime
2. commit to drawings and paintings if one of the thumbnails really works out

I'm sitting upright, drawing from my elbow against a screen that's at a 100° angle. I'm working on my line precious, and my linework is much easier to control when I draw with the side of my palm braced against the screen. I slide my palm with my elbow, and the surface is smooth enough that the movement of the sliding doesn't disturb my linework.

Is bracing against the drawing surface with your hand/wrist to be avoided when drawing from the elbow? I'd like to know this before I put in a month of stabilizing exercises in either position.

Hey guys I'm drawing this plant seahorse (it's not good at All but that's not important) and i'm planning to draw a blade of grass as tail. But I want it to bend and make a curve in itself. I just can't draw shit like that.

How do I draw bending stuff and what can I do better while drawing stuff like this?

So I have a perspective question I really hope someone can help me with because I've been trying to figure this out for hours.

I have this scene in 2-point perspective, but I want to rotate an object in the scene around one of the axes (in this case, the axis going to VPR) so that vertical lines for this object are tilted. Now, I'm pretty sure this would put the object in 3-point perspective, but I don't know how find the 3rd VP for the vertical axis. If I want the new vertical line to be tilted as shown with the blue arrows, how would I figure out the VP for it?

If the blade of grass is gonna bend, keep in mind that it would bend along its length so it would need to be drawn in a side or perspective view. in comparison, the leaves all look like they're in top view, so you can see the veins and all that, but nothing from the side or bottom of the leaf. look at some pictures of grass to see how it would look in profile view, but I expect it will be pretty plain looking if you just draw in like that. I think it would be more effective with some simple 1-point perspective.
As for actually drawing the curve, maybe use a compass or ellipse guide until you're more comfortable drawing curves free-hand, and just practice free-hand circles and ovals otherwise.

Ok, I think I figured it out, even though this thread is dead and I doubt anyone will get any use from this.
The axis going towards VPL would move to an auxillary VP, vertically up or down from the original VP, as would be expected of an inclined plane. In order for the orientation of the other planes to remain consistent with this incline, the vertical line would also move to a VP on the same vertical line the the auxiliary VP is on. essentially, the vertical line and line going to VPL are being rotated along the VPR axis. their VPs must remain on the same line (yellow vertical line in picture), which must be perpendicular to the axis of rotation. If a 90 degree rotation takes place, the vertical axis and VPL axis should switch places, in a manner of speaking,
Now to find the location of both new VPs, I first translated the SP to the horizon line with a 45 degree line. Then I treated this new point on the horizon as an auxiliary SP. Next I extended the inclined verticals (green lines) to a common point on the yellow vertical line, which for all intents and purposes can be thought of as a horizon line to the auxiliary SP that was just made. This point was then brought back to the auxiliary SP and extended back to the yellow vertical at 90 degrees to find the auxiliary VPL.

To test this, I added a line in orange. This is another inclined vertical line pointing towards the original VPL. Using the same methods as above, it's found that new VPL axis relative to this inclined vertical would move directly up and down with no VP, so now the VPL axis is behaving as the vertical axis and vice versa, which is what should be expected.

I'm mainly writing this for myself so I remember it, but if anyone reads this and disagrees or has any questions, pls respond
