Post your current drawing here and give constructive critique to others!
Please make sure your posted image is clear, DOWNSIZED TO AROUND 1000 PIXELS WIDE, ROTATED TO THE CORRECT ORIENTATION, and that any unused space is cropped.
If you want critique on a drawing from the previous thread, you can delete it there and repost in this one and then hug a kitten for good luck.

This is surprisingly neat. Would like to see it in color. Anatomy wise, his shoulders look like they're falling into his chest cavity. Think of his upper back as a convex surface with an indent in the middle where his spine is if you traced your finger from shoulder to shoulder. You've drawn him leaning away from the viewer, yet his you've drawn his shoulders as though he's standing straight up.

To fix: move his arms and shoulders up, shorten his neck, and have some bend in his arms. I get his upper arm is supposed to be pointing toward us but there are no contour lines suggesting it, the muscles are drawn as though there is no foreshortening, but the length implies there is a foreshortening. It just doesn't look good. Make his arms less stiff. Make his forearm angled in toward his body a bit more, like his legs: give his arms some movement.

Very very nice, designwise.
When you go to color/rendering, pay close attention to notan, as it has lots of potential, but easy to screw up I guess. Hope to see a great illustration from it.
The only bad point is the bad line quality that really kills it as a drawing. Given that, you should be careful to pick a style that you can pull off well for rendering/colors.

>>2671666
Nice style, good construction.

>>2671773
Looks pretty good, maybe pay a little more attention to line weight? Also your hard surfaces (cars) should be more angular, because since your line quality is lacking, as of now they look a bit potatoid childish.
Also you shouldn't do atmospheric perspective like that, with those half finished lines, do them correctly and them make them greyer in post-prod.
I love the layout very much. Great storytelling.

Keep it up guys, the board needs you!

I don't know if you can read or not. I'll assume you can. IT's explained on the picture. That's about as straightforward of an explanation as you can get. And it's good advice because a lot of amateur artists don't think of colors that way.

>the problem isn't the colors, it's the tonal inconsistency

Those are colors dude.

Fair enough, I got my terms mixed up. Regardless of his values being shit, his colors are shit. You even said yourself his colors are monochrome so that's exactly what I addressed.

Would it have been more valid had I intricately explained in paragraph form how to add more color variety or would it be better if I summarised it in a simple easy to understand picture tutorial which, actually, is exactly what all artists do to pick colors?

You got that canvas quite right, it's constant question that I'm battling. I have more rough canvas that I used for big ones and really fine one for smaller ones. Still A5 sized looks bit pixelated and so does big ones with more rough canvas.

I feel that the composition is the weakest part of your drawing.
Right now, its pretty boring and awkward. I suggest that you space out the dogs more because right now, they are all clumped together in the center of the canvas.
A traditional approach would be to arrange them in a triangle.

The ground plane also takes up about half of the image. Change the perspective so that it takes up close to a third or two thirds.

The dogs also have perspective issues, that might be why they look off.

That face looks really off, should stick to your reference more for that. Her left hand is very weird, probably because you've just sketched it in, try messing with shading to get it to look right. Your lines are really messy. Your edge control is not very good. That red color looks like it was drawn in ketchup. And you shouldn't cut off the foot there, it looks odd, just extend the canvas and finish the foot.
From your drawing, if you were faithful to it, it looks like it was taken on a wide angle really close which distorts the image. I don't know if you'll be able to capture that without everything just looking poorly proportioned. That's the issue with drawing from reference sometimes, because without everything distorting correctly the image can start looking really bad really quickly

I've tried redlining this a few times but not in a way that looks helpful, but basically its an issue of not establishing a horizon line and basing things around that. The dogs are drawn to one horizon line and the ground near them is alright, and then the BG is to a different perspective entirely.

Your problem with the perspective is that you have established an eye level with the way you've drawn the leaves and things in the middle ground and foreground implies that you're looking downward at the dogs but the emptiness of the background implies the horizon is located lower in the image. To fix this you'd simply have to show that the horizon is higher up, like near the tall dog's head. Just paint trees and things going off into the distance and that should fix it. IF you want the horizon to be lower you'll have to show that the leaves in the foreground are closer to the viewer by making them bigger and you'll have to reposition the dog's legs so they're more foreshortened.

Take your pick.

Your lighting could use more deliberation, imo. Your dude's lantern should not be competing with the sunset. Stars shouldn't be visible with that amount of sunset light. Yellow/white means it's still early. Tune down the sunset or the other highlights. What's the purple light on the ground? Seems random.

Also, work on your edge control. The land seems almost as formless as the sky because it is mostly softly rendered and without any distinct shadows.

Pro tip: Don't write stuff like that on your drawings. It makes you seem extremely portentous without any self awareness. Same with signatures on amateur drawings. Don't do it.

I'm sorry I din't write paragraphs worth of descriptions along with my image. Please forgive me. From now on when I do redlines I'll also intricately detail and label every single muscle I draw including its insertion and origin points and I'll make separate drawings to show the veins and arteries as well. Fuck it I might as well show the organs too. Just in case the anon might mistake where they go. Would that suffice?

My point: I gave a simple tip and that was to choose your colors more deliberately. The diagram showed examples of how to do just that. I could have said more, but I didn't need to. Maybe the anon should just experiment with color in that method, if he gets it wrong he can post it and we can give him advice.

You guys are making a stink about nothing.

You need to restart. Stop trying to polish this turd. Look at your thumbnail. Its pretty dark and the focal point is the tree in the top left. Plan out your comp better. Right now there is no flow and the foreground tree is just cutting the image in two. The house is a shit design and the lighting on it is fucked. Also the reflection in the water in the center doesn't make sense at all. Why add such a bright reflection right next to your light fox creature? Pretty good improvement from the last image tho so I guess that's cool.

If you're serious, assuming the rest of your drawings are like this one, you need to focus on gesture and expression. Your character looks stiff as a plank of wood and her expressions are robotic. You just gotta practice a whole bunch, you shouldn't worry about making full blown illustrations or even doing what you're doing here, drawing a fully clothed character etc. I'm no animator so i don't really have a direction to point you in unfortunately. I guess just get in the habit of doing a lot of gesture studies and practice drawing subtle expressions.

is right unfortunately. I know how much it sucks to restart but if you really want to make this illustration work you are going to have to, right now it's too fundamentally bunk. Big improvement over the last iteration though.

>>2675026
I like down, I think it shows the movement a bit better, like she's thrusting herself up as opposed to the other where her leg is at max height and there's no feeling of movement.

>>2674961
You looking at Feng Zong (or whatever his name is) for inspo? Me too bruv. Right now you've got too much dark darks in your picture. Distilled down to the values your picture is just a big white background and a big black blob that doesn't read terribly well. I'd suggest doing something with his right arm to thin it out, make it more arm-y looking.

Regarding his staff I think it looks really awkward in his hand. Like he's gripping it way near the bottom so it's way off balance in his grasp. It also contributes to the confusion of his silhouette. If you centred the staff in his hand and then angled it clockwise a bit he would look more natural. Then you could also show the space between his left arm and his torso to better establish his silhouette.

There's something boring about the rhythm, maybe because the head, torso, pelvis (under the belt) and legs are all equally sized areas, with two of them busy and two of them simple. The variation in business is nice, the lack of variation in size is not.

Also, giving your character a really elongated neck/head high above the shoulder combined with a stocky body makes it look like a very "static" character - not bad, but like some deformed priest who'd walk slowly, not an old mercenary who would actually fight. If you keep these proportions, perhaps a more ceremonial warrior design would fit better.

It is definitely heading somewhere stylistically, just not fully there yet.
