SAI is a good program for beginners or for people who can't draw decent lines in photoshop either because of lag or lack of experience.
Photoshop is GOAT and you should learn it and get comfortable with it as fast as possible

You can do the same exact thing in photoshop easier, what's your point? If you don't use the same tools it's very, very unlikely you'll get the same result. Why do you want to draw exactly like him anyways? Who would commission a third rate Ruan?

If you really admire the way he renders, study what he did, (A lot of fucking still lives focusing on light and rendering) and don't try to copy his results.

Is it shit? Kind of. SAI is a pretty dated program.
Though I will say that it is light as a feather at some really high resolutions and that I've created brushes that I haven't been able to replicate in any program, photoshop being among them.

It's the program that I doodle with before bringing in the heavier artillery.

I don't use vector mode for anything except laying down perspective lines. There are no lines in a finished painting. Your criticism is moot.

Sai just has a different brush engine. It has great blending ability but it's not as easy to manipulate brush scattering or transparency. Your best bet is to try and find a chalky brush that doesn't blend if you want to mimic any photo shop brushes.

I used SAI for 4-5 years and only painted in it, but honestly photoshop is way better for painting. You have a lot more control over what you can do. The blending in SAI is nice but honestly can easily turn in to a crutch and makes things look over rendered and smooth if you're not careful.

Though this thread made me kinda want to try painting in Sai again cause it's been quite a few years.


Tl;Dr: you can't replicate most photoshop brushes in Sai because the brush engine is too different
