These are quite nice. I like that you are playing with the shapes quite a lot, so continue to push your boundaries and maybe the scale of the ships too. The only detractor is the coloured stripes and things, they feel very cliche and outdated. I've been tired of that aesthetic for years now, ever since I guess Sparth or someone brought it back at some point and then every design had them for a while.

What are you, an alien? You can't tell when anatomy is wrong? Perspective? Were you dropped?

Plot twist, I don't even draw. But I can still tell when something is completely fucked. I could sit here and pretend to be some master artisan and write a paragraph for each picture posted and - even without any real knowledge of drawing - my critique would be spot on, or accurate enough that nobody would notice I'm a noob. Why is that? Because it's simply mother fucking obvious.

>It's shit
>Git gud
Very beginner mindset you have going - it's ironic because these are infact the only two pieces of feedback that you can tell to anyone and you will still be right. There is always room for improvement, people are too hasty to share their work. The matter of fact is everybody in this thread is simply not good enough to be looking for specific feedback - look at what has been posted since.

Besides, if you trust some random fucker on a forum as the authority on what you need to do to improve, chances are it is very generic feedback anyway.

Oh boy, I was worried that we weren't going to hear from you again because I hurt your feelings.

You are messing up "opinion" with "critique." Anyone can have an opinion, but you have to be an artist to give a critique. Opinions don't tell an artist how to improve, critiques do. Nobody comes here to hear shitty opinions like yours. People want artists better than themselves to tell them how to improve. Maybe pay attention in English class for the rest of high school, smartass. Since you said you don't even draw, do us all a favor and get off the board. /ic/ could use less worthless faggots like you who resent people for making an effort to improve and helping others.

>Very beginner mindset you have going
Yeah you tell it like the venerable industry vet that you are, now THAT's ironic.

>people are too hasty to share their work
Only thing I agree with. It's annoying when someone uploads a rough chicken scratch and asks for critique. But this doesnt invalidate other people's right to a fair critique.

>Besides, if you trust some random fucker on a forum as the authority on what you need to do to improve, chances are it is very generic feedback anyway.

Clearly not. They come here to post mediocre art.
>[snip]
You seem confused. There's no need to be mad when someone else is right.

>Yeah you tell it like the venerable industry vet that you are, now THAT's ironic.
There are certain similarities between all creative industries. Even if my specialty is not drawing (and by the looks of it, it's nobody in this thread's specialty either) what I've written is still applicable here.

>But this doesnt invalidate other people's right to a fair critique.
Define fair critique. There's only so many ways you can say "your anatomy needs improvement", "your lines are unsure", "you are symbol drawing"

>Not true, I have seen very good critiques and even redlines here.
I suppose it is relative. I.e. all the Asian masters being spammed would not come here looking for critique or feedback (and are probably smart enough not to look for it at all.)

But look honestly at EVERYTHING posted here. Does it really warrant feedback? What can be said about any of it beyond a sentence? Waiting for the 'redlines' which will probably state the obvious. PROTIP: art is not precious, know when to walk away, everybody in here will improve by simply moving on.

I like those, careful with aligning your features. Especially the eye line, it's the one it's most important not to slant, and it's out of alignment on the one face you drew from the front, as well as the three-quarter/profile just above it (left eye should be lower I think)

The faces with the least chickenscratching look better, because of the strength of your lines it starts to look really too messy the moment you add too many small lines at the same place. I think what makes your sketches work well is your ability to define forms with fewer lines.

This anon speaks wisdom. The focus on furry dog cleavage personally offends me, but more importantly it really doesn't work with the composition. My eyes are being drawn down and around, and it's generally hard to focus in on any one point. It kinda looks like a crop of a larger piece. I mean, it's like kinda hard to grasp the figure-ground relationship just by looking at the thumbnail... Just something I noticed but maybe it's something.

>>2662169
This also exasperates the other point of contention. There are really nicely detailed textures, yes, but they're scattered too haphazardly. I mean, I do understand that it's a WIP, but at a glance it's a bit jarring and definitely something to consider if you haven't already.

I was actually going to zing you with "is that supposed to be a tattoo or something?" but I guess it actually is. The thing is, I wasn't sure because the shading is a bit inconsistent elsewhere. Uncertainty! Inconsistency! Not good! It's also a pretty bizarre tattoo to have, but I guess that COULD say something about his character. If you're going to keep the tattoo, I'd say simplify it and make its colors more faded. Way too much detail and the red cheapens the otherwise good use of the color.

Speaking of colors, there are a few annoying eyecatchers in his satchel area. I think the color scheme is really strong besides that though. Of note is the reddish wood of the sword hilt. The whole thing's got some nice warmth.

I just wanna say that often times you'll find that less is more (you even posted saying you wanted a "simple" well made character!) Consider just stripping him naked and adding on as few elements as you can to get the point across. Honestly, a chef's hat and coat should be enough for us to get the hint. Then from there we can get the visual zinger of the cheese grater sword.

That isn't to say that you CAN'T make a good, complicated character that still conveys a personality well. It's just obviously harder. I think a whimsical chef-knight decked out head to toe with cooking gear could be awesome, but it's obviously much harder to pull off.

But don't let that allure you! You said it yourself! Simple! That's your assignment!
Now let's see what you can cook up!

Interesting, there is a lot of charm in these. The two no ref ones are actually better than the reffed one despite having anatomy and proportion "errors". I think if you just cleaned up the edges more they would be lovely.

Nice pun champ, I'm kinda feeling my way around with the shading so yea I'll probably redo it. That makes since with fading the tattoo up so I'll have to do that. I have an idea, I'll remove the satchel, keep the belt replace the two jars of random stuff on his belt with salt and pepper shakers. Also that means a lot on the colors, I normally have done nothing but mostly detailed black and white traditional drawings. I've only recently broke into digital art, in fact this is only like my fourth digital drawing so I've got lil experience in my colors, So this is outside my normal comfort zone. And I know I so badly just wanna break out and do a fuck ton of detail, but I started this idea with simple in mind and I will finish it that way.

Take this with a grain of salt since I don't ever draw cartoony things or animation type stuff (I'm more of a wannabe Craig Mullins usually).

I think the issue with him is twofold. One, you can simplify and unify your shapes more. Notice how simple mine is, and how I can repeat certain types of shapes throughout. He's sort of a blocky character but at the same time not robotically stiff, so he has that swooshy rectangle shape in his hat, his cheese grater, and I added an apron with the same shape. It's further repeated in things like his rolled up sleeve and his satchel. Keeping the shapes simple not only unifies it like this but helps correct things like drawing errors. He feels more grounded now that it's easier to draw the legs and arms, and I can also correct the shadow on the ground plane too. He no longer feels off balance.

The second issue is one of design. It's related to the first point about shapes a lot, but also as a separate thing just thinking about this character. I don't know if you ever worked in a kitchen or not, but I did, and the chef shirts are long sleeved and also there is an apron you wear at all times. Knowing these things, or researching them, helps add a layer of reality to whoever you are drawing and strengthens the idea. Add those things and he looks more like a chef. Also think a bit of functionality--how is that pan just magically attached to his shoulder? I think adding some straps or something would make sense. I did the lazy solution of moving the satchel to the other side and using that as the straps as well. It doesn't really make sense either but on first glance it sort of does.

If you are focusing on design, rather than waste time with making a clean nice drawing, maybe it is better to do some really rough quick sketches and get several iterations out. Look how loose and quick mine is, it only took a couple minutes and if I wanted I could knock out a few more to see what works or doesn't work.

Holy shit that's a hell of a response. I'd be lying if I said I don't feel a lil failure right now with how quick and easy you did your sketch. But shit happens. I've looked up some reference and did some thumbnails early on based on chef clothing, but I wanted to integrate a knight fairly well with the concept. So he has a satchel for travel, the grate sword actually has a sharp edge all around it, and he has a metal breastplate that is themde to a chef's uniform. But I think I will take a few notes from what y'all have suggested, I'll try reversing the position of the satchel (like you have) to get rid of some of the crampness. I gave him a short sleeved shirt underneath the breastplate, which I'm now seeing was just lazy, so I'll give him the rolled up sleeves like you've suggested. Please ignore the shading though I knew it was real sketchy, I plan on erasing it. As for the pans, (seeing how they are non-stick) I should add some kind of strap, his supposed to have one on each shoulder but the sword is blocking it. I'll have to find a way to make some straps that blend well. In one of the thumb nails I did give him sort of a apron, but like I said before the idea is more around a knight that is chef themed. So I guess his a lil more knight then chef? I'm gonna experiment a bit more with this drawing, then I'll probably do another with more focus on similar shapes like you've suggested. To be fair my thumbnails I used for this were copy and pasted from one thumbnail which I was satisfied with and then edited. I see now that it's biting me in the ass. But once again thanks man for the outstanding advice and response!

I've never really spent any time studying hair, so I thought it would be an interesting challenge to try to add some on your heads. I sketched an idea of how I wanted their hair, gathered refs that were similar, redrew it while trying to pay attention to the basic 3d forms the hair is made of. Kept the rendering simple and soft. Got progressively lazier with each wig. :P

Looks really good man! I think the cast shadow from the chrome sphere on the cyan shape should be a little crisper. If it's receiving direct sunlight then the cast shadow would be pretty hard, especially if the two objects are so close together like that. I also think the cyan blob thing would have a specular reflection of the sun somewhere on it since it seems to be glossy (based on the reflections in the shadow).

Don't be discouraged. It definitely has potential, you're just missing a few key ingredients. The further you push yourself out of your comfort zone, the sooner you'll learn. Take a new perspective, figuratively and maybe even literally.

Imagine a your painting is a camera. Now just move it around. Get closer to the figure, try different angles. It helps to use references to first break through that barrier of habit. Right now I think your first challenge is moving away from the centered figure composition. And it might suck at first, but that means you're getting somewhere new.

Then you went a bit overboard here. First thing I'd do is make the lighthouse/tower thing darker again. Just making it brighter doesn't make it stand out more. You had it pretty good in the first one, because it was a darker, less saturated color than the blue/orange compliments behind it. By further desaturating it in the second one you further increased its contrast by moving farther away from the orange that's present in the sky.

It's great if you work on it more, the lighting is kind of dull and boring, add some sunlight and reflective light in your environment and the characters' clothes, weapons, and armor. Also work on rendering your background a bit more. My only other advice would be to make the perspective a bit more interesting, like finding another angle to point the camera. Hope it helps, otherwise keep it up.

The drawing is nice, but I find the colours are all too similar. Everything has essentially the same local colour and material, and there's almost no value or colour shift from light to shadow.

Also I find the drawing of the chest is inconsistent with the thickness of the metal border on the lid. On the right side it seems to have some thickness as it rises above the wood, but where her foot is it's drawn as though the metal is flush with the wood.

I get what you say about the chest, in the sketch it was in an even greater perspective and made sense, I had to make slight adjustments when doing the lineart and I neglected that detail.
