Last thread: >>2653231

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have tanoshi!

Fresh off the Mayflower? Then do yourself a flavor and check out /ic/s unofficial NEW STICKY:

I wouldn't say figure studies are not need to draw stylized anime and such. You definitely need some kind of background in understanding basic proportions of the human body.

Now to go further and make more dynamic stuff it definitely helps to have an understanding of human anatomy and how humanoid figures look in a 3d environment.

Well that goes for basic anime and stuff. I'm sure people who do figure studies and do the loomis stuff are the ones who will make/made it.

This makes no sense.
I get that you're going for a comedic effect, but look at her pose in the first page after dodging, and then look at how you made her torso and arm move to strike, it has no flow whatsoever.

Even if you fix the arm motion to make sense, the copy/paste look of her second pose looks too lazy to be comedic.
The better choice here would have been to make her side kick him.
The better better choice would have been to implement comedic timing with an in-between panel that would allow you to set up a sensical punchline.

heh, sensical punchline
because the lines don't make sense
the motion lines of the punch

STOP ANIME APOLOGISTS ON THIS BOARD!
Is it wrong to want to draw anime? Why is drawing anime assocaited with a negative stigma here, and why do those of you who draw anime suck up the renderniggers in the drawthread? Being able to draw muh moe grills is as much a valid end goal as mastering any other skill in art. Why do we tell ourselves it is less skillful to draw anime than paint fully rendered pictures , when most of the time the subjects and composition in the paintings are much more unoriginal?

Fuck this gay board.

1. get one of the following
>vilppu's manual of drawing videos
>hampton's cgma analytical figure drawing lectures (both of them)
>huston lectures

2. watch one lesson

3. watch the lesson again, but this time draw alongside it

4. practice what you learned

5. move on to the next lesson and repeat

No reading required, shit's easy, just do what they do.
You're not going to fix that drawing because you have no idea what you're doing.

Because the style of modern mainstream anime is garbage. All you have now is featureless moe faces that look soulless and demonstrate no sense of form at all. Why would you want to draw that? If you're studying any anime post 2006, stylistically, you have shit taste. Anime is long past it's prime, so people shit on it.

That's more due to the artist being shit than anything. Besides, there is more to anime than the face. If you dont know your fundies you're not getting away with it. Not to mention anime artists have to consider things like lineweight. So there is no reason to say that learning to drawing anime is not a legitamate challenge.

>Besides, there is more to anime than the face.
The stylized faces are the defining feature since the bodies are more based in reality than the faces are.
>Not to mention anime artists have to consider things like lineweight.
This isn't exclusive to anime art. Why are you even mentioning this?
And why would you post the work of an artist who suffers from flat same face on his women? I know Inoue's work and it's obnoxious and one note. His women look like they were pulled straight from crap like Sword Art. They look like shit because he's copying the modern mainstream styles in his female faces.
>So there is no reason to say that learning to drawing anime is not a legitamate challenge.
Modern anime styles AREN'T challenging. Which is entirely the point since it makes animating less difficult, allowing them to pump out more shit quicker. Study the old stuff. Stop wasting time with the new stuff because it's garbage.

He clearly draws them.

As for his process I can't find the video anymore, but there was one where he showed how he takes photo, put it on photoshop to give it the manga feel, then print it and rework on the whole thing by hand by adding effects and new lines, besides the grey shading.

Pretty neat.

Any suggested fixes for the Ragnar in the middle? I actually struggled a bit with the pose. I just really wanted to have a pose where he's sorta lunging forward with his shield on his left hand, while screaming. My friend initially suggested I have him dual wield two axes, but the shield is just something I vividly picture in my mind for him in this pose.

They're all supposed to be like dynamic battle poses btw, like something you'd see in a videogame. Not exactly stills from an actual battle, but more like poses in motion or very dynamic poses you know? I'm actually gonna draw their Coats of Arms in the back and color the background to their matching colors.

That's why Arthuria looks like she's "dancing with her sword" since I kinda want them to convey a bit of their character, even though her pose isn't exactly practical.

As for her Arthuria. This is the design I made for her a couple months ago (I still haven't finished it). Her head in the new sketch I made will need a few fixes ofc, she does look a bit funky, but I'll get to that as I start painting it as it'll be easier then. She actually does look like that Jeanne D'arc actually. It's not intentional though. My vision for a genderbent kind Arthur kinda went like this:

>If she's a woman passing herself off as a boy, it'd have to be a young King Arthur, and she'd have to look like an effeminate boy. Obviously she'd cut her hair short to pass herself off as a boy.
I never much liked the Fate design for a female Arthur too much, even though I liked the concept quite a lot.

How does one typically start to learn to draw in a more 'anime' style? I'm new to drawing and am obviously starting with the fundamentals but what are some good ways to transition into a particular style every now and then? Is it just a matter of trying to emulate the style of artists I like?

>Is it just a matter of trying to emulate the style of artists I like?
Once you're able to consistently draw generic heads and such from imagination in various poses, yes.

Then you start analyzing what makes the artists you like stand out, what features do they exaggerate, etc...

"anime style" means a lot of different and diverse styles. Stylized art in general, especially Oriental styles, tend to exaggerate two main features:

The eyes on females and children tend to be drawn bigger and given special focus.

And Heads tend to be proportionately bigger regardless of gender, ESPECIALLY on kids. Likewise, females and children tend to have proportionately "shallower" or smaller heads. Meaning that the distance between the mouth, nose, and chin, is much smaller than it's supposed to be on a normal head.

From here, it really varies a lot, especially if you look at different decades. In the past, noses used to be drawn, now you've only got a dot for a nose or its omitted entirely. The size of the eyes also varies a lot per style. Etc...

The key is that you're able to properly define the planes of a head/skull/face, the cheekbones, nose, eye sockets, forehead, chin, temples, etc... Once you can do that well and consistently, "STYLE" is really just a matter of exaggerating whatever features you want to exaggerate the most. It's really just playing around with proportions once you've got a good grip.

I have a question regarding style and simplifying things. I post in this thread regularly and have a problem. I want to draw like pic posted (so, animu, strongly stylized and elongated) and while I do want that, I always skipped fundamentals because I thought they're silly and I already knew them (I didn't). Now it's come to bite me in the ass because it's luck when something looks right. Problem is, I feel like whenever I practice things, especially from reference, I deviate so much from my goal, that it just looks unappealing to me. Everything looks fat and stiff and wonky. And when I go back to stylization I fail to draw with proper anatomy.
Im scared that if I finally after 8 years of bullshitting learn fundamentals and/of anatomy, I'll be unable to ever draw like this and end up drawing in a way I find utterly unappealing. I know that style is based on fundamentals, but I have trouble combining them and fear unlearning style. (I haven't really reached my goal style either though. But it's getting there.)
Is this a reasonable concern and common problem, and if yes, what would you suggest I do? The mere thought of hating my stuff even more and feeling even less joy got me anxious.

maybe you need to spend some time finding artists whose work appeals to you stylistically while also showing strong foundational skills/anatomy. expanding the list of artists you choose to be influenced can increase your range and interests, and it might help you see various options in how you can combine style and skill in your own work.

>> No.2662001

Start by learning perspective rather than anatomy.

If you can draw cubes in perspective you can draw pretty much anything. All figures are essentially composed of boxes.

Fundamentals isn't just anatony. Learn proper draftsmanship, perspective, and values.

Don't do.it, and you'll continue to plateau. The image you posted shows a strong foundation of the fundies. Everyone's gotta do it. All the best anime artists gave learned the fundies. Skip on this, and you'll never draw like them.

Also, style is the last step to learning. As an artist, you should be able to draw in ANY still, and if you git gud, you will, so idk what you're worried about.

Not to word by word >>2662001 but it's essential to understand the importance of fundamentals.

Fundamentals are essentially confidence and understanding on all overall artistic values, it's not just a matter of anatomy. You'll be learning perspective, values, shapes, colors and a lot of basics. The style will just happen, and really if you understand all those you'll be able to draw however you want. You'll understand why something works and where it belongs and then be able to replicate those you like, even better than that. You may even change your taste when you start to understand further.

A good place to start by your sketch is perspective. Learn where objects go in a plane. and situate them, even if it's just shapes. You'll ultimately fuck yourself if you continue forward without at least practicing here and there.

Neither of those Anons, but let me tell you how it is; once upon a time an Anon suggested "Anime" threads and was quickly frowned upon by /ic/ elitists that feared traffic coming from /a/ leaving /ic/ plagued by beginners.

After a while of constant crying and moaning, to appease the complaints it was decided to rename these threads "Alternative art/Stylization" for the purpose of removing "Anime" since that phrase alone sparked controversy.

The emphasis of the Anime threads was to act as a containment general to keep those who drew anime out of the regular drawthreads it was never meant to be legitimate it was only to serve as a filter but of course /ic/ managed to find something else to complain about and fast forward 3 years later here we are coming full circle.

Hmm, that's fascinating. As someone who redlines the only reason I do so is for my own practice first, original artist 2nd. If the redline helps the other anon then that's great but me redlining drawings for the sake of helping others is never 1st priority. Redlining can be, in itself, a way of showing off because then you have lots of people replying on the redline saying 'wow this is great!'. I imagine others who redline have similar mentality on this subject; it benefits the redliner as well.

Whoop.

Sorry for the late reply mango. Nah, it's not from any specific anime. Just an idea I have for a comic that I'll probably write in a couple years.

It's set in the 70's and people have like psychic abilities, and it's really campy and crazy, and they fight with guitars and music and shit (cept for the Pompadour guy), and the MC is this comically suicidal guy based off Jimi Hendrix who befriends the Muse of Music Euterpe and kickstarts his journey to become the greatest musician ever by "fighting" all the musicians above him, like Radio-head (literally a guy with a Radio for a head), The Stone Boulders, Madame Lalala, etc...

Idk why, but I feel this song really encapsulates the idea I have for this comic really well:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiY-SgAFUUY

I see it as told from the POV ofthe Hendrix guy, or as I'm calling him atm, Joni Rockets.

Never been attracted to men, never been curious about gay porn or anything either. But I guess the possibility might be there. You never really know I guess. But I guess that'd make me bi, not homo, should that ever crop up, as I still definitely like girls.

I was a little perv as a kid mango. Used to look up girls skirts and stuff. I even groped my babysitter's boobs when I was like 8 years old. Cops came to my house once for smacking a girl's butt on the school bus when I was 9. Something something sexual harassment, you know how America is...

Anyway, I've always been of the opinion that everyone is naturally bi, considering nature - animals don't care what they fuck, they just wanna fuck. And then you have the Greeks, the Romans, and the Samurai who were all openly bi in various ways - but we're conditioned into being Hetero by our environment, and some select few who lean more to being homosexual feel repressed by that.

What was that called? The Kinsey scale or whatever? Yeah, I think that's pretty accurate, it's more of a spectrum of sexual preference, with everyone kinda starting out bi, with a certain preference, and then being conditioned into liking one more over the other.

But what I mean is, if you put two people on an island, regardless of gender or sexual preference, they will fuck. It's just a human need to desire sexual connection. And the heart will settle for what the heart can get. So two hetero girls will wind up fucking, two hereto dudes, a gay girl and a gay dude will fuck, etc... Doesn't matter. Nature and human instinct, always have their way.

That's my take on all that.
