Why do so many artists ruin their art when they try to clean it up? Do they not notice how vastly inferior it is compared to the sketch?

Lineweight.
there are plenty of reasons of why you shouldn't chickenscratch your shit, one of them being that it makes your sketch look more detailed than it really is.

It's because they can't into rendering.

They waited until they were a "good enough" level sketching with a pencil and didn't practice enough with rendering.

One skill set got left behind while they advanced and advanced in another.

What are they going to do? Not render their sketches forever? They need the practice to catch up.

It's like if you only did barbell curls and bench press. All your other muscles won't get bigger and your entire silhouette is going to be misshapen and unpleasing to look at.

It's from Sausage Party, a movie about sexual innuendos.

Depends what you want for your art. If you just want to do comics or storyboards you can get away with not knowing how to paint. If you want to do illustration or concepts then start practicing painting and rendering now. Keep in mind linework/drawing is not mutually exclusive from painting. Practice both each day.

It was pretty crap.
It was real obvious they where just trying to push the one 'outrageous' joke but had no idea how to make a good cohesive narrative out of it.

In other words, your average Seth Rogen movie.

How do I line weight /ic/

is line weight necessary for 2d animation?

>How do I line weight /ic/
There's no universal answer. Everybody has different approaches, most of them involve getting variety in how dark or thick the lines are, but this isn't always the case, ligne claire for example.

>is line weight necessary for 2d animation?
It's a part of drawing, so yes to a degree. The important thing in animation is more the overall forms and design being clear in each frame and then having good movement and weight when you put the frames together. Good line weight can help this, but isn't an absolute necessity and there are multiple ways to approach it that are all valid.

you know nothing
line weight contrast is linked to readability of contourns, allowing to make overlayed objects read with info about space between the forms
results in foreground > bg lines, shapes > interior detail lines
all of this is universal you fucktard

except there are plenty of artists who have beautiful cleaned up lineart without any rendering. What you're talking about makes no sense at all. OP is talking about a sketch losing its energy and what makes it look good in the clean up process, and if you want to get better at that, you have to get better at inking and cleaned up lineart, not at rendering.

Also, if we were to go with your analogy, then getting good at drawing would be training your legs, back and entire core and rendering is arm workout.

transfering the dynamic sketch drawing to a clean up is a skill you must develop. it ain't easy and many animators struggle with it.
there are all kind of people, the ones who are good with sketching, but don't know how to clean up, others who don't have a strong foundation to build upon, but strangely good at rendering.
solution's simple, don't avoid your weak points, work on them.

People have mentioned Ligne Claire twice now and you are still too fucking lazy to google it? It's an inking style that uses the same line size throughout the drawing, with very little, if any, variation in line weight and it's been used by plenty of great comic book artists who have no problem showing depth. So no, it's not universal, you fucktard.

If you have this problem, you're approaching the process of "inking" your work incorrectly, or at least not the way you should for the results you want.

What's happening is that building up the sketch allows you to see the lines and weight that you want, you're building up appealing forms because the sketch is loose and there's less stress involved in the process.

If you look at inking as a completely separate process, of course your lines are going to look like shit. You're stressing about making it look perfect and neat and that makes you tend towards uniform/static linework, because there's less margin for error.

Instead of trying to polish your work by inking, clean and shape the sketch.
